btp1979 Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I take the reviews in Cigar Aficionado with a grain of salt, but I was excited to see a Hamlet Tabaquero salomon on the intro page to the cigar review section of the latest issue. Unfortunately it was represented in picture only, even though there was a portion dedicated to figurados, it was not included. The other two cigars on the intro picture were included in the reviews though. Did anyone else notice this, or for that matter care? I've grown increasingly disenfranchised with the magazine, but it still seems to be the only player so what to do?
garbandz Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Read the scribbles, look at the pretty pictures, remain steadfast and carry on................... 2

Have you taken a look at Cigar Press? I personally know one of the writers, so maybe I am biased, but I feel it is the best cigar magazine going, and then 2nd would be Cigar Snob......even though they have centerfolds like Playboy, but they aren't naked and usually 9xs out 10 the cigar they are holding isn't lit. 1

wineguild Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Having worked on several magazines, I can say that this is a common occurrence. Here's how it happens. A photographer is asked to shoot several cigars that may appear in an article. A photo editor chooses the best shots and passes them on to the designer for page layout. While waiting for final edited article text, the designer works on other pages, such as the intro page you mentioned. They choose the best photo for the large intro shot...the Hamlet Tabaquero salomon. The writer submits the article and their editor cuts the Hamlet Tabaquero review. The designer lays out the final article not realizing that the Hamlet Tabaquero image on the intro page is no longer relevant. In their mind that page is "done". They aren't even thinking about it. They have dozens of other pages to do before deadline. Proofreaders don't find the error because it's not misspelled or a punctuation error. So, something like this isn't really a reflection of the quality of their reviews. That's subjective. Hope that helps, Michael 2
TheLiquidGator Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I've been getting it for free for about 4 years. So I can't complain. Pictures are good, some articles are good. The cigar reviews are mostly ignored.
sheppsea Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I've never really enjoyed CA, and they're Cigars of the Year are just ridiculous. I'm subscribe to Cigar Journal, which I find a very interesting read 2
JohnInCleveland Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Got CA as a gift, I enjoy it. I don't take their reviews seriously but I think they write some good articles and I find it entertaining. Calling it the Rolling Stone of cigars isn't an unfair comparison, if Radiohead cut the head off a chicken and recorded it they'd give it 4 stars. 1
JohnS Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 UK Cigar Scene Magazine is a monthly on-line magazine that I thoroughly enjoy reading. Give it a try, if you haven't already.
Guest Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 A family member bought me two of the latest issues (at the time) for Christmas last year. And whilst I appreciate the gesture, I feel a touch guilty that I still haven't even looked inside, or had the slightest browse through them.
martinr Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 as a newbie , i picked up cigar aficionado the other week, and have just about read through it all. I like it, the articles were good, im a fan of Damian Lewis from his Band Of Brothers Days, so his interview was a good read. As for the rest, i havent come across any other cigar magazine locally, so i have nothing to compare it to..... there are alot of ads, but being that im a newbie, even they are nice to look at :-) so all round i cant complain and will likely subscribe for 12 months to see how it goes. If i continue to enjoy it, its a magazine that i can add to my regular reading. I just stopped a couple of magazine subscriptions, so i have an opening :-) i only subscribe to a couple each year, more what im into at the time, i find a 12 month subscription gives me a good feel for the magazine, expands my horizons, and gives me some new things to read each month. i love reading and whilst a lot of what they put in magazines can be read online these days, i don't enjoy reading e-magazines or e-books, im a bit old fashioned that way, i enjoy a printed copy in my hands, something i can relax and read whilst having a tea, i can take it anywhere and never need to worry about the battery running out. I never leave home without a book and or a magazine.
PigFish Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 ... smoke more, read less! You can get more peer related reviews on a BB that you enjoy. What is more, you can add to the conversation as well as take from it. It really is all about what 'you' get from it. Me, I get less space in the trash can! -Piggy 3

zeedubbya Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 It's in this months issue! I really enjoyed the one Hamlet Salomon I've had. (Mods if this picture is not allowed please take it down--I am not familiar with the rules on these things.). Edited to delete picture in CA. Read the copy laws and it seems this could be construed as a violation. The review is on their website if anyone wants to read it. Received a 90 rating.
Puros Y Vino Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 All five Tabaqueros were reviewed on CA! Three scoring 90 then 88 and 85. CA Search link.
Squarehead Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 The CA-Magazine was way better in the 90's to early 2000's when the changed the format.I subscribed to the CA for about 15 years and to the Cigar Insider as well until I didn't renew them anymore a couple of years ago.
LLumley Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Anyone look at Cigar Snob? Quite a few ads but the articles are pretty good.
zeedubbya Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 I get Cigar Snob and I like it. Originally the subscription I have to CA was gifted, but now I re subscribe every year. I enjoy it. There's what I think are some silly things in there sometimes but for the most part I like what they do. Any magazine about such a subjective thing is bound to have a broad range of followers. Positive or negative. 1

stogieluver Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 BE (before enlightenment) I eagerly awaited every issue, hung on every review, passionately chased down and bought highly rated cigars, only to find they tasted like ****. AE (October, 2012), I still receive the magazine, but really couldn't care less when it arrives. Not rating more CC's highly says it all to me. It's bathroom reading material now. 1
