NSXCIGAR Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The last equation needs brackets...could be either 10 or 14 1
brschoppe Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 10 - Order of operations. No brackets needed. Over time, mathematicians have developed a set of rules called the order of operations to determine which operation to do first. The rules are: Multiply and divide from left to right. Add and subtract from left to right. http://eduplace.com/math/mathsteps/4/a/index.html 4
Rye Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I'll take it as if 'BEDMAS' doesn't apply to shapes. 14 is my answer. Fun!
Habanos2000 Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I guessed 14, my son told me 10. I'm going with 10. 1
planetary Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Seems like it's got to be 10, at first glance.
Guest rob Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Brshoppe, and the explanation is correct 10 is the answer. Brackets not required. You can always check a calculator is correctly programmed by running a simple check. If you type 2 + 3 x 4 and it gives you the answer of 20 - don't rely on that calculator! Most cheap ones will give you the wrong answer of 20.

This equation should be expressed in the order it is written from left to right so 20 would be correct As to the question 10 is correct

Guest scsi Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Mathematics has rules. common sense being at the top of the list......
Fugu Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Fun to see how this basic math (is it 3rd year, elementary school?) really can be subject of so much debate.
