Hi all!

I recently ordered a few boxes of RASS and Monte 4s. The RASS boxes have the same code as do the Monte 4's (in kind, not across brands). Would it be preferable to leave the cigars in their original dress boxes or would you transfer them to empty wood cabs for longer term storage and ageing?

Thank you

If I had the option to buy in cabs vs. dress boxes I'd always buy the cab, particularly for long term storage. However I don't go out of my way to swap cigars from boxes to cabs; so I believe the cab is better, but not enough to trouble with. Now a guy with a lot of empty cabs of the right size might find this easier to do.

If you calculate the opening area to internal volume, you'll find that the cab has a lot less opening for the given interior. That combined with less paper and the bundle shape (rather than flat layers) that the cigars get stored in are (IMHO) what contribute to the cab being a modestly better aging environment. As El Presidente sez, there's nothing like tobacco on tobacco for longer term aging.

Most of my stuff I'm just trying to get 3-5 years on, and I'm fine with the dress boxes, but for long term aging I'd get cabs of 50 every time if it were possible.

I personally leave mine in the dress boxes as I think most do, although nothing wrong with putting them in 50 cabs if you have them

The advantage of cabs is the lack of air, less porous material and the bundling of the cigars themselves. Unless one recreates precisely the factory-style bundling and uses and appropriately-sized cab there's really not much of an advantage and in fact could be worse than just leaving them in their semi-plain box.

Do you like Pepsi or Coke? Red licorice or black licorice? Rock & roll, or jazz?

There's really no right or wrong answer here, and you'll get various suggestions. It's all up to your personal preferences, based on storage capacity, etc., etc.

If Cabs are so great, why are they slowly going to the wayside in favor of 25 ct. dress boxes? I see absolutely nothing wrong with dress boxes and ageing cigars is not a big necessity like the old days. Most cigars smoke fine ROTT.

Cheaper to produce, easier to pack at the factory and take up less space in master cases and in humidors

If I can buy a stick in a cabinet, I will

Doesn't matter if its a 10, 25 or 50 cab. I don't really care for Box Pressed cigars so cabs a preferred by me

On occasion, I'll try and buy 2 dress boxes of something the same code (date and factory) and make a 50 cab up myself (I did this with 5 boxes of RA superiors)

Also, while most cigars "smoke fine ROTT" most cigars also smoke wonderfully after 3-5 years in the humidor

Thanks for everyone's input. I think I'm going to go the cab route.

Solid choice. Mine are in both dress boxes and cab but anytime I see an empty cab at my B&M I pick it up for a couple bucks. Can never have too much wood in the cooler :)
