soildoc Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Question for the group. I purchased a box of HU Mag 46 from Mar 14. So far the 2 I've had smoke well but definitely need some aging. However, when I start the 2/3, I distinctively taste menthol. Only last 5 minutes, but it is definitely there. I've never experienced this before. Wondering if it is just me or have others had this same flavor? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
JohnS Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Hmmm...menthol. Did this flavour completely take over the cigar, neutralising other flavours and make the cigar unpleasant or at least difficult to smoke?
soildoc Posted October 1, 2015 Author Posted October 1, 2015 For that brief 5 minutes it was definitely there. Almost a chilling effect like eating a peppermint. Definitely strange. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
soutso Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I have often tasted mint or a cool minty flavour in many different types of CCs. I especially notice it when I retrohale. I think (or suspect) it's just a feature in that particular cigar that you smoked.

suggs Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I'd think this strange flavor just means the cigar needs extra time resting. I've not experience the same flavor you do, but if I detect any type of off-flavor I definitely don't touch the sticks for at least three or four months. How long have you had the cigars in your possession?
soildoc Posted October 1, 2015 Author Posted October 1, 2015 How long have you had the cigars in your possession? I've had them about two months. I let them rest after receiving them and have had one each month. I did dry box each stick for 5 days. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sophistic Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Yes, had that couple of times in young upmanns, disappears over time. 3y are min for upmann, >5y best.
CaptainQuintero Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 The magnum series are somewhat not overly Upmann. The 46 are heavy hitting power smokes and the 50 are more akin to SLR than Upmann to me. You get flavours in both rich are not really common to traditional Upmann, which I'd say are creamy leather and biscuit.
yhomas Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I just had a similar experience from a GEO Feb 14, but the unusual flavor (in the last 1/3) tasted more like licorice to me. It seems that the licorice type flavor is reasonably in the same category as menthol. There may be another spice type flavor that fits better. This was my first Mag 46 BTW.

I would definitely agree with this. More of a sensation than a flavor. Hopefully a few years will help to bring the true flavors out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It seems that the licorice type flavor is reasonably in the same category as menthol. I really don't think so. Licorice is present in several habanos blend (in the smaller Montecristo vitolas for instance) but menthol, to me, is a defect. I'm glad I've never experienced that menthol taste because it's the last thing I'd want to find in a fine cigar... 1
