In Rob's thread on the challenges newcomers to habanos face, Orion made an interesting point:

In my experience to truly appreciate how amazing Cuban cigars are you have to research the history. The more you know about past history and how Cuban cigars of been rolled basically the same way for so many decades you come to appreciate the final product just that much more.

...which raises a question: what books and sources for learning the history of Cuba and its cigars would the good people of FOH recommend?

Thanks!

Both out of print, but the encyclopedia costs an arm and a leg on the used market. Yowza.

I'm pretty sure you can find the Ch. del Todesco at Amazon or an other online service. Just make sure you get an english version, the book was initialy written in french.

How about Dieter H. Wirtz's; Davidoff Legend - Myth - Reality

Great read with a history time line about Davidoff as a person in Europe developing his

passion superimposed over the existing cigar landscape and his relationship with Cuba

at a time when Europe and Cuba decide to make huge changes in the way habanos

will be sold to the consumer world wide. cigar.gif

The Havana Cigar: Cuba's Finest

by

Charles del Todesco

and MRN Encyclopædia of course.

del Todesco's book is the best I've seen on the story of Cuban seed to cigar. Easy to find and fairly inexpensive http://www.amazon.com/The-Havana-Cigar-Cubas-Finest/dp/0789203278

Great pictures too!

Can't wait to get my copy of The Havana Cigar: Cuba's Finest by Charles del Todesco.

You won't regret that purchase.

btw, don't take "too seriously" the reviews and pairing suggestions at the end of the book: they were written at a time when the habanos were very different from what they are now...

*I found that Charles del Todesco Havana Cigar Book in 1997 in all its glory for sale at The Junkman's Daughter in Atlanta, and it was priced at its $50 or $60 price. I found the managers and negotiated the price down to about $30! Hahahahahahahah!!! Good for me!sneaky.gif And it is sitting with my Min Ron Nee Post Revolution Illustrated Encyclopedia of Havana Cigars with my variety of desk top humidors. And I obtained that valuable, priceless item for $60 due to a group buy special.
