I sometimes read about particular Cohibas or Montes that require years of aging to be properly enjoyed.

I was wondering if there are any of the better sticks would be reliable to try without aging first. I realize there are many factors but if you had to buy blind, which regular production CC would likely blow you away?

I'd add a good HDM Epi 2 doesn't necessarily need aging. However, not sure what you deem as a 'better stick.

and welcome.

Thanks for the list EP!

Smitty I guess I meant, if you wanted to impress someone with an amazing smoke, would a high-priced Cohiba give you the best odds

I will try the HDM though, seems like a winner.

If you wanted to impress someone, I'd throw them a Conny A.

I'm not enjoying the BBF or the Connie A at the moment, ROTT

Agree with you on Conni A. The first half is brilliant, the second part is ehh...not there. Time will fix that.

I like party shorts and Upmann mag 46 fresh and young..if not rott.

I've started to enjoy quite a lot of them off the bat. Even those ones that people tell me you NEED to age (QdO Imperiales, ERdM Demi Tasse, etc), I have found the younger ones to provide a fresh green hue. Of course, I can't get them as far down... But they have a certain charm to them.

Much like Fried Green Tomatoes vs. Ripe Red Tomatoes!

Punch Punch has been doing well too.

Also, keep in mind that not infrequently the 24:24 sales will have boxes with 2-4 years already on them (Punch DC's, Encantos, come to mind), so you can look out for those.

With my woosey palate, I still find lots of sticks (PSD4, Epi2, Sir Winnie, Punch Punch, HdM DC, Lusitania, Partigas E2, P2, Cohiba Siglo IV and VI) that are good ROTT, but if they could benefit from another couple years down I will only notice it in that last half or third, when the mongrel bite starts to show up. In that case, I just purge the stick until the volatile elements no longer spout blue flame and voila! It smokes just like the first third again. The more macho among us would likely just suck that baby down to the nub, but the frequent purge in the last third is my solution. Then I put that box down for another 6 months and try again at that point.

Even my RASS has been off, I have been enjoying the Monte Double Edmundo.

I ahve had one lot of RASS that didn't last too longh in the humi and smoked great right from the start. The box I just received was almost grassy with a almost bitter after taste. I'm really hoping these improve with a little time because I love them when they are good.

Thanks for the tip, this is a problem I have run into. Seems no one likes to admit that the last third can be an issue.

I have to recant this statement. Before last night I hadn't picked up a BBF in about 2 months.

Last nights stick was really enjoyable. Not quite there yet, but it's smooth out and flavors were here Boli.

Another couple of months and we'll be good.

I know it is likely sacrilegious, but I picked up a cab of PLPCs off a recent 24:24 and have found them to be quite tasty after only the customary 30 day rest after transit. I cannot wait to see what they are like after 3-5 years. Probably gone the way these are smoking now.

I had good luck with mid-late 2014 PD4 and 898s ROTT but my BBFs and RyJ cazadores were not great and my RASS were pretty awful. Lustanias were good but have a big upside, and same for Monte 2s so I'd rather wait on those.

Many are enjoyable straight away. The reality is that they will also improve rather dramatically in some cases with 3-5 years down.

What I am consistently enjoying right out of the box (at a decent quality) currently include the following:

Montecristo 4

Ramon Allones Superiores

Bolivar Belicoso Fino

Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion 4

Upmann Connoisseur A

Upmann Connoisseur 1

Por Larranaga Encantos

Montecristo Petit Edmundo

Bolivar Petit Corona

Partagas Lusitania

Hoyo De Monterrey Especial

Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Number 1

Saint Luis Rey Regio

San Cristobal Principe

San Cristobal La Fuerza

I am enjoying many others as well but have left them out as I am not sure that what I find appealing is broadly found by others.

Rob, it is interesting that your list is so long. For me the Hoyos are the only cigars that I think are outstanding ROTT. The others may be smokable but they gain so much from aging that smoking them right away is a tragic waste. The RA Superiores are a great example. They become extraordinary with age, OK they might smoke great right away, but why waste a potentially glorious cigar for a pretty good smoke right now? I'd say the same about the Upmanns.

But you get the chance to smoke a LOT more than I do under perfect conditions...

Why should anyone wait many years if a cigar is 92-94 and might end up on 94--96. For me it is the case with shorts and mag 46 especially but more in the same group. They will get bit better but so fantastic within their first 2-3 years. It doesnt worth it for me, just love them too much. However when you get a 97 cigar from a high 80s, thats anoter story. The last third justify for me. Smoked a '14 sir winnie few days ago. Brilliant first, great second and so down in the last...it needs time. But some don't. At all.

Taste is subjective, but a "good" young cigar in my book is an 80-85 these range from plpc, shorts, rass, Partagas e 2. 86-90 are young sir winston, cohiba esplendido, cohiba lancero, and most dc. Scores of 90-95 are great smokes and I have only had a handful of these, 95-100 are Epiphany scores that I might get 2 or 3 of a year. I'm not saying that your scoring is wrong, I'm only saying it is subjective. Therefore, a lot of people who age cigars regularly for long periods of time beleive it is worth the wait for a cigar to go from 83 to 90+
