Skyfall Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Doing some spring cleaning, and found this at the back of one of my cabinets , hidden away. On it's side, in a dark and cool environment. It seems to have kept well. Ken, any input on its merits? 1
Skyfall Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 Don't know why the pics are sideways. I'll fix it in the morning. .
Ken Gargett Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 good to hear from you. it will come down to storage and if it has not been in serious refrigeration, there will be doubts. and even if good, probably not as spectacular as it might be but could still be very, very good (being in a cool dark place is good but the temp should also be constant and the back of a cupboard will not be, and, assuming you are not talking of a cupboard in the basement of a castle in northern scotland, it will also be above what it really should be). that is the bad news. the good news is that it is a great wine from one of the best vintages of last century. one of the best clicquot have ever made. it started with little hype but for me, has got better and better and better. 1988 is a stunner vintage and one that will live long (yes, and prosper). it is a classic style, so not as rich and full as say 90 or 96. but elegant and structured and balanced. you potentially have a brilliant wine (but storage...). in nfl terms, with good cellaring, it is rg3 at his peak in the rookie year. the cellaring will equate to subsequent injuries, but it has the potential to be truly fantastic. we just don't know yet.
Tino Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I had a bottle of 1990 last month, and whilst still very enjoyable, it was a little tired and would have been better 3-5 years ago I think. As Ken says, 1990 is richer and 1988 arguably has better legs for the long haul. So much comes down to storage, and there can be quite a lot of bottle variation with older Champagne. Definitely worth opening though and a great find at the back of the cabinet!
Skyfall Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 Open, pour, drink, report...... Will do! Just need to find the time soon for a "special occasion" Maybe on Father's Day I will throw down an epic Steak as usual , pop this open with a Monte Sublime or something else magnificent. 2
