ayepatz Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 H. Upmann Magnum 46 AUP JUN 13 Domaine Gérard Thomas St. Aubin La Chatenière 2013 Holy mother of clashes! 1
ayepatz Posted June 5, 2015 Author Posted June 5, 2015 Cigar was lovely on its own. In the past have enjoyed a nice crisp white with a cigar. Opened this wine, which I've enjoyed before. I chose poorly. Bleurgh! 1

Bleurgh! I don't often pair cigars with wine so when I do it is a bit hit and miss for me. I do find however that, for me anyway, that a well aired medium to full bodied red does tend to pair better than most whites I have tried. 1

I'd agree with this, I had great reds with cigars but not whites. I find wines hard to pair with cigars overall, honestly. 1
sengjc Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Try port...traditionally cigar and port go together. 2
westg Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Try port...traditionally cigar and port go together. Love all your posts ..and you drink some amazing stuff ..port and cigars not for me...give it a try though you may be surprised enjoy a good red with a cigar 1
Colt45 Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 In the past have enjoyed a nice crisp white with a cigar. Bingo! I'm another for a crisp white. No Burgs, or anything buttery, or no reds for me 3
MrGTO Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 I've found on any day with any cigar/drink pairing my taste can be off with one or the other.
JohnS Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Love all your posts ..and you drink some amazing stuff ..port and cigars not for me...give it a try though you may be surprised enjoy a good red with a cigar I concur with both your points of view here, westy. Yes, sengjc does drink some amazing stuff!

Personally, I don't drink port as it is a little sweet for my taste (Ron Zacapa is as sweet as I will go). I do agree that a good red does pair well with a cigar - a big, bold, ripe and fruity Aussie shiraz does well for me, I find. Strangely, the predominantly cabernet blends tend not to pair as well - maybe because they tend to be more structured and tannic. I find dry white wine and sparkling/champagne generally do not go well together with cigars for me. Haven't tried pairing cigars with sweeter style whites though.
spicycorona Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Personally, I would never drink a white wine with any cigar. They're bitchy for me on their own.
ayepatz Posted June 6, 2015 Author Posted June 6, 2015 Cider is my usual poison. Find its great with cigars, and some really dry, crisp whites cleanse the palate, but that Chardonnay was just too buttery. 1
habanolover Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Normally a bold cab, single malt or water for me. Cuban rum is also a preference, as is Diplomatico it's just so difficult to keep on hand:/...
PapaDisco Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Clearly you should have kept one in the first shed, and the other in the second shed . . . tsk, tsk . . . 1

khomeinist Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 I think viogner and riesling can pair a cigar nicely. I actually prefer a non-dry white. Higher residual sugar content tends to correlate with a better pairing for me.
