puromaniac Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 http://www.havanatimes.org/?p=110953 Looks tough. Hope the damage isn't too severe.
FLB03TT Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Curious if they have storm sewers in Havana? Without them this level of standing water should be fairly common in constricted passageways after tropical downpours.
Guest rob Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 When the FOH Havanafest took place last. November, we all went to Santii's for lunch. A significant rain event took place over that two hour period that flooded street, to what I estimate to be 2 feet in some places. It was a wild drive back into the city!
Ken Gargett Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 i remember talking to a few locals who had been catching fish one year, about four streets back from the malecon.
El Presidente Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 http://www.havanatimes.org/?p=110953 Looks tough. Hope the damage isn't too severe. Common event unfortunately for parts of Havana. It is remarkable how quickly the water clears. Everything drains into the ocean so once the seas drop it will clear.
dougincanada Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 In the new spirit of co-operation I hope the US will allow the free flow of goods for rebuilding. I also hope the rest of Cuba did not suffer damage. I am headed to Manzanillo Cuba in less than 2 weeks. I was planing to bring some gifts, perhaps it should be rain boots, but as i understand it the southern region has been experiencing the opposite problem. Not enough rain. I also hope the flash flooding has not damaged the tobacco crops. But with farming and weather one can only plant and hope for the best, our prayers go out to the Cuban people. regards, Doug

Yes, they do have storm sewers (well, more like storm drains / gutters, into one all-inclusive sewer kinda), but due to the low proximity to sea level (as Pres mentioned with the sea level not allowing draining sometimes), it's just something that happens.

Some of us Canadian gents were travelling by a Lada "cab" to the pre-release RE tastings at Club Habana when you guys were at Santy's. We got stuck right in the worst part at the tail end of that storm. Cars stalled out everywhere, vehicles driving down the sidewalks to try and stay afloat, water pouring into vehicles through door jambs, etc. Wild to see and experience it.

Yep, that was a very long wait for the cab and quite the ride. I'm still amazed that car made it all the way back to the National.
