JohnS Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I stumbled upon this very interesting article this morning and I thought I'd share for your amusement! Kentucky whiskey smuggling ring charged with stealing more than a lifetime’s supply A whiskey smuggling ring has been busted in Kentucky after police charged nine people with stealing more bourbon that anyone could drink in a lifetime. The rogue distillery workers were charged with engaging in organised crime. Their scheme had begun to unravel after whiskey barrels were discovered behind a shed in Franklin County. Police had been searching for the perpetrators since 200 bottles of aging Pappy Van Winkle bourbon had vanished from a locked area of the Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Bottles of Pappy Van Winkle are rare and some fetch as much as $1000 in private sales, according to NPR. Since then detectives have traced the theft to the home of a Buffalo Trace distillery employee called Gilbert Curtsinger, where they found five barrels of stolen Wild Turkey whiskey. They later identified the other suspects in the gang. The criminal gang allegedly targeted expensive whiskey since 2008 or 2009 under the leadership of Curtsinger. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Pat Melton, Franklin County Sheriff, said that $100,000 worth of bourbon had been recovered, including one barrel of 17-year-old Eagle Rare valued at $11,000. The Kentucky Distillers’ Association said that bourbon made with 51 per cent or more corn is the only native spirit of the US. Kentucky produces 95 per cent of the world’s supply. Fuzz Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 A whiskey smuggling ring has been busted in Kentucky after police charged nine people with stealing more bourbon that anyone could drink in a lifetime. More bourbon than anyone can drink in a lifetime? Hardly. Are we in the middle ages where people only live to 30? Let's look at the figures... 5 barrels of bourbon = 5 x 200L (approx 200 litres or 53 gallons to a barrel) = 1000L 200 bottles of Pappy Van Winkle (750ml bottles) = 200 x 0.75L = 150L Total = 1150L of bourbon One shot = 40ml (closer to 42.6ml or 1.5oz) Average 2 shots per night = 29.22L over one year (365.25 days, taking into account leap years) 1150L divided by 9 people = 127.78L per person 127.78 / 29.22 = 4.37 years for each person to drink their share 1150L / 29.22 = 39.36 years for one person to drink the lot on his own. Say you start drinking at 20 when you stole the lot, by the time you're just coming into retirement, you've already drunk the lot.
Munts Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 If you drank the lot in one go... it would be more than enough for one lifetime. 1
Guest rob Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Don't forget barrels are cask strength - about 50 to 65% ABV. After watering the whisky down to an industry standard 40% to 45%..... That will increase the overall capacity by 15 to 25%.
RickG Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Damn! That's why I can't find any Pappy! Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
MIKA27 Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Nice post John - I'm sure they've recovered the Pappy and will only make more money from it by re-labelling it with some sort of fancy name to commemorate the theft: Pappy Van Winkle - Smugglers Ring? 1

Actually, it has a much sadder ending than that. The Van Winkles are asking for it to be destroyed because they cannot guarantee the quality of the stuff... http://www.esquire.com/food-drink/drinks/news/a41072/van-winkle-bourbon-destroyed/
Ken Gargett Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 now if that were an aussie newspaper, the article would be full of "allegedly this" and "allegedly that". nice to see an old style report.
