dangolf18 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Interesting list. Don't know a whole lot about Australian wine though. What are your thoughts Ken? http://www.jamessuckling.com/tasting-report-nicks-50-best-australian-wines-of-2014.html
Dispence Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Interesting list. Don't know a whole lot about Australian wine though. What are your thoughts Ken? http://www.jamessuckling.com/tasting-report-nicks-50-best-australian-wines-of-2014.html Kind of a disappointing list for me... Three Penfolds in the top 10 (although I agree with The Grange - with the other 2, I guess you know how they pay the bills over there). Zero Elderton?!?! Ode to Lorraine was one of my favorite wines last year. One Torbreck - Super low on the list. I was happy to see überblanc, and a few cool boutique wines on there. I just don't think this list is truly indicative of Australian wines as a whole. Very biased.
NJP Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Good to see Wendouree up the top end, I'm a huge fan. Interestingly, allot are deemed RTD's and quite young.
LLC Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I've had some great Penfold St. Henri over the years.
cigarbigboy Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 try the scope of mollydookers. great, bold, every price point. delish.
Ken Gargett Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 great thing about these lists are that they are fun and everyone will have a diferrent opinion. i've known nick for many years, ever since he was an architectural student waiting table for a mate of mine. top bloke, works hard, very good palate. this is a list for 2014 so we have moved on and many of these are out of date by a vintage but, for what it is worth - 50 Best Australian Wines of 2014 1. Penfolds Grange South Australia 2010 no question that this is a stellar grange, a worthy number 1 and a cert for recognition in the decades ahead as one of the greatest of all granges. 2. Wendouree Cabernet Sauvignon Clare Valley 2012 '12 a top vintage and these guys always exceptional. i can understand many of our american friends querying the list because they might not see a lot of these wines, especially something like this. it is worthy. 3. Seppelt Shiraz Grampians St Peters 2013 the best st P perhaps ever. i understand the comment re 3 penfolds in the top 10, but you can add this one as it is all part of TWE. 4. Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier Canberra District 2013 truly exceptional. 5. Penfolds South Australia St. Henri 2010 i have a problem here, not because of the wine as i think it is a stunning st henri, but because it was released back in 2013. buy all you can if you find it. avoid the 2011. the 2012 is also very good, not as good as '10. 6. By Farr Pinot Noir Geelong Sangreal 2012 this and the next three all worthy. 7. Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia Bin 707 2012 8. Oakridge Chardonnay Yarra Valley 864 Willowlake 2012 9. Fuzz AI Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Interesting list. I do quite enjoy the Seppelts St Peters and also their Chalambar Shiraz. I agree with Ken, the Cullen should be a lot higher in the list. It is an absolutely fantastic drop, especially the '09.
markmurase Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Ken, thanks for your great comments on the list. I just wanted to put in another vote of support for Penfolds St Henri 2010 being in the top 50 list: managed to pick up some at release and I think in time it will be excellent. Dispense, I agree with you about the Elderton red wines. I've had some lovely ones. Good to see a number of Aussie dry Rieslings in the list. Love 'em.
