Popular Post tjohn7 Posted October 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2014 This is my first review, so lay into me if you have any critiques. I'd love to hear them. These are the sticks Rob and Ken reviewed about a month or so back. They've been in the humidor for just under three weeks, so any burn issues I attribute to that and the fact that I did not dry box this stick before lighting up. Here we go! Opening My opening impressions of this cigar are good. Earthy notes, can't really seem to pick up many other flavors. The wrapper near the cap has a seam that's coming undone but the foot is solid. Overall the construction of this cigar is quite good. After cutting with a guillotine, the draw is perfect. Not too loose and not tight. First Third After toasting and lighting, the burn is somewhat uneven but quickly corrects itself. A lot of the flavors in the early parts of this cigar remind me of Hoyo de Monterrey. An earthiness with some coffee notes. There is a great deal of smoke production, which my NC consumption conditioned me to love. A few minutes into the smoke, maybe only five or so draws, a creaminess becomes apparent on retrohale. So far, the finish has been rather long, which I definitely enjoy. I have become a huge fan of HdM Epi 2s after Rob sent me a PSP box a couple months back, and this stick reminds me a great deal of those cigars. Similar flavor transitions, with fantastic draw and smoke production. Mid-way thru the first third I start to pick up some black coffee flavor, which really enhances the smoke. Up to this point, my smoke has been medium body, nothing more and nothing less. At the end of the first third, a dried wood taste has been added to the profile, as the earthy tones I previously tasted have disappeared. Currently, I am tasting dried wood, cream and black coffee. I know Rob has stated that Upmanns have a shortbread flavor, but as I've never had shortbread, I cannot comment on that flavor. Second Third The body at this point is more towards full as I definitely feel a bit of a nicotine high Because this cigar has only been in my humidor (65%, 65F) for a little under three weeks, and the humidity here in Michigan has been variable, I needed to touch up the burn in the second third. This neither affected the heat of the stick or dampened any of the flavors. The second third shows much more coffee and cream, flavors I genuinely enjoy in my smokes. Final Third Coffee liqueur and leather begin to appear at this point. The body has moved back towards medium, as the stick begins to pick up just a little heat. The burn becomes a bit uneven at this point, as the stick starts to canoe. Some nutty flavors are now present, but only fleetingly. I attempt to try and remove the band, but there was an excessive amount of adhesive present, which causes the band to unravel and the wrapper to split. Still smokeable, but frustrating that it happened. Overall Impressions Truthfully, this has been a wonderful cigar. It wasn't as dynamic or complex as some of the other smokes I've had recently, but it really packed a punch in the second third. If I was to put the rest of these down for a few years I think they'd be 96-97 caliber at that point. For me I would rate the first third as a 92, second third as a 93, and final third as a 92. A very good cigar, which I would be thrilled to smoke any day. 7
jvel79 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Very nice review especially for it being you first brotha! Very descriptive. Takes a lot cojones to step out and put tour thoughts out there. Makes me want to try one.

cooper669 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Great review, I will have to give them a go.
earthson Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Nice review, dog! Let them alone for several years and then they'll come out swinging! (P.S.: Perhaps they're so similar to the HdM because you're smoking them both young? Many of the Cuban marcas taste rather similar when young, IMO)

Thanks for that! Tom

I'm sick of Michigan and the Big Ten being horrible. Hopefully in a couple years things will be more competitive haha 1
Maestroso Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Nice review, thanks. Are you sure the box code is OME and not UME? Do you have the box or just a couple of sticks?
dflan82 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Thanks for the review. Your post inspired me to smoke a couple of these next time I go to MI to visit a buddy. 1
dicko Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Great review. Try some shortbread biscuits! They are delicious 1
martymonty Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Great review, I found the tastes very similar to what you explained. I find your opinion of construction puzzling though? From the seam on the cap, to the wrapper tearing when trying to remove the band! For the price (my most expensive box purchase) I had two cigars in the top row with small tears in it and one with a little tobacco tab on the cap. Though I smoked this in very undesirable conditions ( walking the dog on a cold night) I expected better construction, the wrapper even started to unravel half way through until I let the burn catch up. Like I said, less than desirable conditions, but I was dying to try it. The taste did not dissapoint , my next one will be in better conditions and I DO expect more.... Loveee the Upmanns! 2
