CaptainQuintero Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I was just wondering if anyone had and information on these, it's been a while since I read up on them. As far as I know, only short filler are made by ICT and are machine finished. With the millenium changes, the main marca's machine mades were either discontinued or turns into hand finished or hand rolled cigar, eg the various Mille Fleurd and Quinteros and Piedras. Now with these latter cigars, I've heard various about them; that they are short filler, either machine or hand bunched and then hand finished (Wrapper). They are medium filler hand or machine bunched the hand finished They are long filler, hand rolled and hand finished. Any clarification on the above? Short filler, medium filler, long filler? Machine or hand bunched? Medium filler is smaller leaves or leaves that have been ripped into pieces bigger than short filler? Until now I assumed most piedra, Quintero, lfdc were short filler machine bunched and hand finished. The higher up ryj/partagas Mille Fleurs were long filler hand bunched and finished. The mythical medium filler?
Smallclub Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 The PL panatela, the RG panatela extra, the Fonseca Delicias, are stamped "TC" for "tripa corta" = short filler… The only time I have seen really short bits of leaves, like chopped tobacco, in a habano was in the Gispert Habanera No.2. 1
oliverdst Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Several possibilities. There is even cigarrillo long filler.
Maplepie Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 One of the best cigars, BEST CIGARS i've ever had was a late 80s - early 90s unbanded short filler cigar. Like chopped tobacco. When the ash went out, i could pull out the tobacco from the smoulders and saw that almost no piece was longer than 1.5cm. 1

While they are not really cigars with character, or cigars that generally evolve like a properly made long filler cigar, I certainly would not dismiss them as all junk… They are certainly not that! MHO. I have no specific data for you CQ, I don't know. I just thought I would proffer an opinion about some of the MM cigars that I have smoked, generally. Good thread here! -Piggy
CaptainQuintero Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 All good! I'm guessing the medium filler is more of a grey area? I love short filler too!
Maplepie Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 All good! I'm guessing the medium filler is more of a grey area? Naturally. Take away sand from a pile of sand until it is no longer a pile. Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry.
PigFish Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I used to buy these La Corona coronas, or petit coronas for about $40 bucks a box, from '90-'91 that would knock your socks off… You had to be in the mood to smoke one, and should not on an empty stomach… I sent one to Chris to smoke in his Coronas pool. It will be interesting to see what he thought of it. Cheers. 2
CaptainQuintero Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 According to CCW the machine bunching is completely discontinued now. All cigars are totally hand made (Not including ICT). Short fillers obviously still exist eg Por Larranaga Montecarlos et al No mention at all of medium fillers, I swear some Quintero at some point were classed as this though. Only finding some heresay about the process in NC cigars.

Overproof Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I thought the PL Montecarlos were long filler. Either way, they are perfect the way they are.
Smallclub Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I thought the PL Montecarlos were long filler. Either way, they are perfect the way they are. The Montecarlo IS long filler. It's the panatela that's "TC" (tripa corta).
CaptainQuintero Posted September 23, 2014 Author Posted September 23, 2014 I wish I could remember where I read about it, it was years ago when I first started smoking. Possibly off a retailers website who was trying to give information? Certainly you see some retailers with old or strange information on some cigars still. I could have sworn it was something to do with Quintero too. Maybe it is simply a bad crossover trying to explain the difference between chopped up cigarette style filter and the larger, better quality/blended style used in short filler cigars. Certainly that would make sense in terms of the crossover from machine made into hand finished/hand made when I was starting out (2004/5) In fact I remember in particular one retailer saying that Quintero went from being machine made before 2000, to machine bunched-hand finished and has been that way ever since! Also my bad about the Montecarlos, I genuinely thought they were short filler because of the price! How's that for a reflection on HSA pricing policies! 1
