shlomo Posted August 25, 2014 Author Posted August 25, 2014 Any pics from the trip? TIA! Only a handful. Most of me and my wife making stupid faces.... incredible beach, water pool. Nice resort....TERRIBLE food. Resort had the worst cigar shop I have ever seen in Cuba as well. Will not return to it.

TheFullMontecristo Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Which resort did you stay at Shlomo? I was at the Tuxpan back in mid May for 5 days as its a short distance from the LCDH. The food at the resort was tasteless and repetitive (like a lot of Varadero resorts), the pool water was actually green when I was there as well but at least the beach was nice, weather was awesome as were the rum and cigars.

I've been to the Tuxpan. The only positive is the beach and the proximity to the LCDHs in town. Wont ever go there again either! The Bella Costa next door is much nicer imo. I stayed at the Oceans El Patriarca. It just opened 2 years ago, so everything was nice, clean and new, but just not as good as the Blau Varadero that I stayed at several years ago.
shlomo Posted August 25, 2014 Author Posted August 25, 2014 Las Vegas,NV. Can't help you, sorry. Gonna have to get in touch with other Americans who have travelled to the forbidden land...

mikek Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 So can u take a trip from any place in d US to Cuba now?? I have been told you have to fly into Mexico City and leave from there,I just don't know how it is getting back.I guess I just need to talk to A licensed travel agent.I heard if you were or traveling with someone who had family there you could fly from Miami!?? I don't know how true that is!
shlomo Posted August 25, 2014 Author Posted August 25, 2014 Afaik you would need a special visa. Don't think you'll be allowed to bring anything back, although many have. Apparently even though is illegal, its not difficult.....
helix Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 In Varadero for great food beach and close to downtown check out Las Morlas.
shlomo Posted August 26, 2014 Author Posted August 26, 2014 Cigar report Shlomo? Cigars were terrible. Went to all 4 shops, plus the hotel shop and the airport. There were no Infantes, no reservas or gran reservas, no books, no Upmann 520 or other special releases, no Noellas, no Torreon, no BGM, no RA Sup, no Epi Deluxe. As for anything aged, nothing older than 2012, but the women at 63rd (where I spent most of my time) were so incredibly rude, and massive snobs didnt even bother checking. I told myself that I would never go to 63 again, as the women there are the worst, horribly condascending, arrogant, mean and inhospitable Cuban people I have ever met. Problem is, I really love Alfonso. He is the exact opposite of the women there. He is genuine, heartfelt, warm, sincere, just a really great person, not to mention that I love his cigars. More so than many of the more famous Havana based rollers. Lots, and I do mean LOTS and LOTS of mold on many cigars. Didnt see any holes, but every box I opened had mold. Just thinking back to 63rd gets my blood boiling with some of their attitude. Just gross.
shlomo Posted August 26, 2014 Author Posted August 26, 2014 In Varadero for great food beach and close to downtown check out Las Morlas. Really? It does not get great reviews....as far as I'm concerned, "great" food does not exist in Cuba. Good, even very good, sure, but not great. And I don't understand why. They have all the ingredients to make great food...just at the places I have eaten, nothing was great. If it wasn't for my love of cigars, I don't think I would bother visiting Cuba ever again. The people are generally great, the beaches are amazing, the weather is tropical, the prices are affordable....but the same can be said about half a dozen other destinations, with better food...
helix Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 ok great is subjective............we never had to eat a la carte the buffet was always good. All the folks we met from the higher end resorts were complaining about the food, when we described what was regularly available at Las morlas they were surprised, normal breakfast items fruits, breads, toaster, cereals , bacon and eggs to order off the grill, great fresh Italian pasta bar, plates served fresh to order from a chef every night ,fresh roasted meat grill manned by a chef every night also . Lunch was served at the beach house bar/ BBQ pit chicken beef pork even had hamburgers and fries.
El Presidente Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 I really don't know anything about Varadero. Food in Havana has gone through somewhat a revolution over the past 4 years. From 5 " very good restaurants/Paladars" to 30 or more " very good restaurants/paladars" that are really trying to be different and of a high standard. "Great" I don't think I have had yet in terms of world class food. Still throw in Cigars, company, rum, laughter and plenty of great afternoons and evenings have been had 1
LLC Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Definitely some very good food and restaurants in Havana if you know where to go. Add in the atmosphere, the people, the music, the drinks and lighting up a cigar at the table after dinner and you have great meal.
