Popular Post El Presidente Posted July 7, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 7, 2014 Had great few days away with my sons Ben and Tom. Winter days here are glorious. Winter nights and evenings a tad on the cool side with pretty much zero degree celsius but a few bottles of Red wine, a fire and cigars keeps away the chill. When only camping for a few days we run a simple setup with no overall tarp. The boys are in charge of the fire. They prefer it that way as the essential ingredient in a good fire when I light them is a cup full of petrol. They find it a tad scary. i find it effective and time efficient Anyway....pitiful effort lads. Took an hour to cook 6 German sausages for lunch! Set up the fishing Canoe but Fishing on the first afternoon session was slow. The sunset however was brilliant. Post dinner it was a cast out the front. Tom was thrilled with the catfish. Ben not so much. Camp site thieves. Possums a plenty This Pelican adopted us for a few days and managed to eat everything from meat to potatoes. Tom would check the crayfish pots in the morning. None...but he had a great time. Fishing was slow but with this tranquility, who cares.... Captain Rob Ben can get cranky when the fish are not biting....thankfully he landed this cracker Yellow Belly! Yes the set up is painfull, the pull down worse. Camping for less than 5 days is not really worth it but with no TV or electronic gadgets you really just sit around a fire, talk and laugh. I am not sure there are too many other opportunities today to engage on a level that kids and dads have done so for an eon before. Simple pleasures are often the best and most memorable. The difficulties are but the access code for the experience. 5
kwsaw63 Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Looks like a nice trip with your boys Rob. Gotta agree that there are too many distractions today that get in the way of quality time with your kids.

Despite being a (former) hard-core, solo backpacker, I hate sleeping on the cold hard ground anymore; but, make it a trip with the kiddos and it is a fabulous thing. My boys are considerably younger (6&7) and, whereas in previous years I had to do it all, this year my 7 year old pulled me out of the sack at 5:30 a.m. to go fish, promptly strung his rod, baited it and reeled in a spectacular bass in the first hour while I just kicked back with a cup of coffee and watched and coached (completely unnecessary). I take this as a sign that the boys will be able to support me in my old age, and in a manner to which I've become accustomed! It's so unbelievably fun to see how much they enjoy the discovery of it all. It's all I need to get me to pack up the family truckster one more time and venture out to boonies. I'm not sure how well I'm going to manage when they're old enough for serious backpacking rather than car camping, but I'm going to give it the old college try! 1
Fuzz Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Good too see everyone had a great time. My question is, did you leave anything behind this time? Young Tom is old enough to no longer bring his teddy with him, so.... do you have your mobile, wallet, watch.... outboard?....

Tom believes he lost an eyebrow as a result of one of my "petrol lightings" .....but his eyebrows needed a trim anyway.

I remember camping on PEI (Canada) and after three nights, I got the forecast for the next five days: unending rain... Insular weather can be blunt. I packed and started back home. Glad you had a nice trip!
