groundhog Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Given the duty etc on cigars in the UK, I'm wondering about a little cigar tourism... The options are: Prague Brugges Amsterdam France (probably for a holiday, rather than just for cigar shopping) For the first three, it would probably be a day trip / overnight. I would be aiming to buy enough cigars that it would work out cheaper, even with the travel etc... By the look of things approximately 50% of the cigar cost is in taxes in the UK. - (So when I was looking at the c&c thread, I was quite surprised that they were a lot more then $6 or under). Not sure what to go for, as I'm very, very new to this.... But was thinking it might be fun. Anybody done it? Any tips? I think I can bring 200 back for personal use without paying any taxes, but tbh it'll be less than that!
polarbear Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Prague has a couple of stores but I think fakes are an issue in all but one of them. I walked into a head shop in the main square and it had uber rare Montecristos for reasonable prices, I didn't risk it. From what I've heard Spain is the place to go. The prices there are low and preset by the government so most stores are all the same prices. They also have decent aged stock of regular production sticks if they're your thing
CaptainQuintero Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Geneva certainly! Switzerland is excellent.
groundhog Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 Unfortunately getting more expensive to get to though... And longer trips...
Troels Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Spain is fairly cheap - especially when it comes to old stock, which is fairly easy to find. On recent production the prices on small cigars like shorts, rg perlas and their latest pl regional is very good too. Havent been to Madrid, but both Barcelona and malaga is nice cities with cheap flights
Trent0341 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Out of curiosity wouldn't ordering from our host save you both time and money? If you're just looking for a fun trip then I get it or if your customs is an issue maybe?
groundhog Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 I'd still get stuck for taxes when the boxes came through customs though? This way I get a jolly and some cheaper sticks.
ErikB Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 A lot of people go to Amsterdam to buy their smokes...But seriously, the LCdH there is a sight to behold. Prices in Belgium and Holland will be the same, don't know about Prague.

Dont know how costums work in your country, but for me its only now and then I got a letter before I get my parcel, which means that I have an overall business case that works out pretty well
groundhog Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 AFAIK in the UK they're fairly strict. Not sure what other people's experience is of customs here though?
MrDowse Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I hate to point out the obvious but why not save yourself the air fare and order from our hosts?
shlomo Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I hate to point out the obvious but why not save yourself the air fare and order from our hosts? He already stated he is worried about taxes. Also our host has new stock, while many b+m in Europe have older, htf, or regional stock.

Thanks for taking my lead and pointing out the obvious too Shlomo but he is new to this and it may not have occurred to him that what I suggested is even possible and I doubt he is going to be too fussy about aged stock this early in his cigar journey. For what it's worth i'm in the UK too, and I worry about taxes but no risk means no reward
Maplepie Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 200 back for personal use!?! where do you live!? unless you're travelling with other people, i guess. also, when are you thinking of going?
Guyman1966 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Based on the thread that I posted last week, Spain or Switzerland is looking good.

dangolf18 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Don't bother with Prague and Amsterdam...cigars are still super expensive there. France is by far more reasonable and they have great regional edicions.
Grahamsant Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 AFAIK in the UK they're fairly strict. Not sure what other people's experience is of customs here though?Sending you a PM re: shipping from our hosts
Maplepie Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 You can bring back 200 anywhere within the EU oh really!? outstanding! cheers for the info...
polarbear Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 You can bring back 200 anywhere within the EU Jeez! I'm moving to the EU! Its 2 cigars in Aus! Not 2 boxes, 2 single sticks
Guyman1966 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Looking good, maybe, but since it's not an option... Perhaps it should be
groundhog Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 Have received a couple of pm's (thanks chaps!) - and have ordered a sampler from our hosts. Really excited about it, as it means if I do venture West, I'll have a better idea of what I'm looking for! 1
