I'm with Rye on this one. The last third is my favourite. Here's an interesting article I borrowed from Simon's (Strada's) post on facebook. I'm sure (and hope) he won't mind:

Love the last third close to the end. That is what I like most before the first and the second third. ;-)

It has always been the middle for me. Really is the sweet spot in my opinion.

I really enjoy the last third (third third??) of most cigars, if smoked carefully. The really good ones end up burning my fingers.

I've got to say it depends on the particular cigar. Some are amazing out of the gate, some improve as they move to center, and some rock right before they're done.

Some are great all the way through too!

this PSD 4 is hitting floral notes in the last third very nice

While I've had some that I loved all the way through, with no real difference, I do prefer the 1st third generally.

It really depends on the cigar I am smoking. A great one tastes good through all thirds, keeps me fully interested and ends with me burning my fingers a little at the end.

My favourite part of a cigar is the first puffs while lighting it

Generally speaking, I think the first third is the most consistently good portion of any given cigar. With that said, the best portion of an outstanding cigar is usually the final third, when I can't put it down. The final third can also be the worst, when some cigars turn bitter and hot. How's that for a simple answer?

Speaking out of my experience only (no science here) but truly think the last third will be hot and bitter if you are smoking too fast or takin' too big puffs. Not even a young and fresh cigar will show those signs. Fresh and young cigar taste is still far away from the overheated ones. IMHO

*Edit: especially with small RG cigars
