dicko Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 G'day guys, My girlfriend bought me a synthetic shaving brush from Body Shop and I love the experience of shaving with the brush but the quality is terrible. The "hairs" are already pulling out after maybe 20 shaves. In light of this, please recommend a shaving brush for me. By the way it doesn't need to be synthetic I'm happy for horse hair or whatever. Would prefer to spend under $50. Thanks. Dicko
Guest rob Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Dicko, I bought one online from Staright Razor Designs. It's a Heinrick Thater - and is absolutley awesome. It may seem expensive, but the experience makes you forget about price pretty quick.
Munts Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 For that price range I would go a Pure Badger bush. Something like this http://www.mensbiz.com.au/vulfix-pure-badger-shaving-brush-849.html
NJP Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 For some reason it's like they use the hairs from around the Badger butt, the smell is pure Gouche for the first month. But they are a grouse brush. It might be just me though, unlucky to get the couple that used dirty Badger.
targa88 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 You might want to try a Plisson brush made for L'Occitane. Great synthetic brush 1
Skyfall Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I had to do it..... http://youtu.be/0-fqPvmiaAM But yes, Badger Brushes are great! Geo F Trumper has some awesome ones.
lostsoulcamero Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I use a muhle silver tip for over a year and love it spend the extra money it'll be worth it
jat Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 For that price range I would go a Pure Badger bush. Something like this http://www.mensbiz.com.au/vulfix-pure-badger-shaving-brush-849.html +1. check out the MensBiz site for somthing suitable. I got sick of the standard foams and razors every morning and decided the put a bit of ritual back into what was becoming a chore. Having a few satisfying items (i.e. brushes, creams, soaps, etc) makes the process somewhat more enjoyable in the morning. If you have to do it every day, do it well. Cheers JAT
daeji5 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 There are plenty of 100% badger brushes on amazon. Parker is what I use. No issues. Sent from my XT1053 using Tapatalk
Marker Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 http://stirlingsoap.com/hardware.html Their badger brushes are only $10 but hold up well. I have had one for 6 months and no issues. Their soap is great and come in sample sizes so you don't have to spend $10 for soap and not like the scent. Love their beard oil when I keep a beard for a while. The facial soap is quality and no additives.
TM-US Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I can recommend these guys:http://www.badgerlather.com/ They are friends of mine, but I can also tell you that their stuff is fairly priced and high quality.
LexG Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 +whatevernumberweareupto for a badger bursh. i started out with a synthetic from the body shop, my wife got me a badger brush a few months ago (Edwin Jager), it is the shiz. i used the synthetic brush a week ago to compare, it was like trying to get a lather with a shovel. badger all the way
LexG Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 For some reason it's like they use the hairs from around the Badger butt, the smell is pure Gouche for the first month. But they are a grouse brush. It might be just me though, unlucky to get the couple that used dirty Badger. agree with this, the smell at first is...intriguing.
Cohiba Stevie Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Muhle silvertip fibre is without doubt the best shaving brush ive ever used and i have been wet shaving for a pretty long time. In my view they are completley indistinguishable from real silvertip badger in terms of feel and latherability. They are also more robust that genuine badger and arent subject to deterioration. Muhle have also brought out their silvertip fibre v2 range which is supposed to be even better.
DWC Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I prefer boar bristle brushes. The badger is a lot softer than the boar but I think the boar lasts longer. I've been using the same brush for over 30 years now and it was from a fairly cheap Old Spice wet shaving kit. Buy good, buy once. Like the old saying goes: "I don't make enough money to buy the same tool twice!" Synthetic sucks IMHO Dan
liuzzi Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Simpson classic... will last a lifetime! +1 Have used the colonel model for 5+ years
ZinZan Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 At that price Edwin jagger best badger is pretty good. Used it for nearly 3 years before any thoughts of upgrading and btw I used the body shop synthetic too, absolute crap. I've not bought a Simpson but they do cost a bomb but I dont think you can go wrong with them. My latest brush is rudy vey custom silver tip which is awesome and he's true artisan and such a gentleman. Sent from my GT-I9295 using Tapatalk
Phillys Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Omega pro (boar), great brush for soaps, and for Badger, it is hard to beat the $33 Whipped Dog Silvertip. I have both and can attest to the quality, yes there might be better or nicer brushes out there but the Whipped dog 24mm with shorter loft is my favorite brush, and for $33 the price is unbeatable. Also helps that Larry is great to deal with! http://whippeddog.com/ just pick a handle and a knot size, email Larry and enjoy!
Pedro2486 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 You might want to try a Plisson brush made for L'Occitane. Great synthetic brush They make some nice products.
dicko Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 For that price range I would go a Pure Badger bush. Something like this http://www.mensbiz.com.au/vulfix-pure-badger-shaving-brush-849.html Thanks everyone. I have purchased one of these and will let you know how I go. 1
ksblazer Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 I'm partial to Semogue brushes In your price range I would recomend the Semogue Owners Club boar brush. It's one of the best boar brushed out there
ZinZan Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Dicko I bought a vulfix super badger turn back (travel) brush wasn't really impressed with it. But you've s already pulled the trigger, best of luck on the purchase Sent from my GT-I9295 using Tapatalk
jvel79 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I picked up my brush from the art of shaving. A silver tip badger brush. Definitely worth the money. Soft on the skin but but helps create great lather whether you use a soap or cream.
