El Presidente Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 in our quest to produce the ultimate Cigar Coffee (and we are a long way from there yet) we had a great little event Friday the 25th of April running from 11am until the last person left at 4pm. We had 4 blends on the day each blind tasted. For the record blend B won with an average score of 8.9 / 10 (in a black and white coffee) followed closely by blend D. As I said we are a long way away from producing something we are 100% happy with but we are closer. A huge thanks for the 20 reprobates who turned up to go through 8 coffees (and then most of my beer and wine ) on a public holiday We produced a mix of cigars on the day from Cohiba Siglo VI to RASS HDM Des Dieux to Partagas P2. No use picking the best cigar compatible coffee without great cigars! Special Kudos to ken for announcing that the only reason he was there was for the free cigars Our final taste off will be in 6 weeks time with 2 coffees only...accompanied by great cigars and Zacapa rum. I will send out invites to all those who took the time to attend the initial tasting. Cheers! Rob
Ken Gargett Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Special Kudos to ken for announcing that the only reason he was there was for the free cigars an outrageous slur. i said free cigars and coffee. and how the hell could those members stuff it up so badly. clearly A as a street ahead of B. at least D was spot on.
mncz Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 What is black and white coffee? Is that the Ozzie way of saying with milk? "A street ahead" – that's a new one for me, too. I'm slowly picking up an increased familiarity with the Australian vernacular with frequent participation on this website. Looks like a great event! I love a good cuppa, especially when it's sustainably grown, harvested and traded fairly.
markmurase Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Zacapa rum in 6 weeks time - I'll definitely be there
markmurase Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 an outrageous slur. i said free cigars and coffee. and how the hell could those members stuff it up so badly. clearly A as a street ahead of B. at least D was spot on. I also liked A (in black) + D(in black & white). Glad to see my taste agrees with yours, Ken. There's hope for me yet
AndrewNR Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Sooo devastated I dont live in brizzy, have a great time lads Looking forward to tasting the result
Jeremy Festa Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Thanks again Rob. Cool photos, look at the concentration on my face. Actually everyone's face. Looking forward to next round.
Mr Cholmondley Warner Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I'm glad that in the pic of Ken using my 'Coh-ebay' lighter, the cap of it was actually up
StingMeadery Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Had the most phenomenal Brazilian/Colombian blend at a new cafe in Auckland that's roasts it's own custom blends this afternoon. Absolutely outstanding...! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
canadianbeaver Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 This is a fascinating process and I hope you guys had a great time! Many of you know I have a tiny little coffee biz. A couple of years back I was actually in a coffee tasting competition. "Pat" ended up winning. I did not mind. Pat is the VP for coffee buying at Second Cup Canada. The reason I am posting here is to explain a tasting phenomenon. If you are taking the "Pepsi Challenge" (or coffee), between 2 samples, chances are you memory tells you the difference. But three samples it becomes much more difficult to remember which tastes different. So competitions use three. Also, in round one, the samples had one different coffee. In round two, all three were the same, one was just stronger.
