IPORTER Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Hi Fellas, First of all, not sure if this question has been tackled before on this fine forum. If so, apologies for the repetition, if not, would be great to have your opinions and experiences. Personally, I have always used the guillotine. I am aware of some of the drawbacks:- Can leave draw too loose can cause cigar to overheat/turn bitter end up chomping cigar flakes from the cap of a badly cut stogie Whereas they say the punch:- seems to make cigar taste more fuller bodied draw tends to be tight less destructive than the guillotine on the stogie cigar tends to go out periodically, more than the guillotined stogie (that doesn't bother me!) Thanks guys! Ian
stogieluver Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Welcome to FOH. Yes, it has been discussed numerous times. Use the search function and I'm sure you'll find plenty of discussion. Others here can provide a link. Me, not so able. I generally use a punch for pc's and minuto's, and a guillotine cutter for everything else. Sometimes, I'll use a V cutter for robusto's. I find that I like the concentration of flavors, etc that a smaller opening causes.

PapaDisco Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I alternate between punch and double or single guillotine. I am always, always very skeptical of any club or shop's guillotine. They tend to be dull in my modest experience and shred way too much. I like the punch the best, but only have a single size (works well for PC's but needs a double punch on many robustos). A brand new guillotine can be great and I tend to default to that on Churchills and larger if I happen to have it in my pocket. I really should just find a two size punch I guess.
Squarehead Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Mostly I use a Double Guillotine Cutter which is closed on on side. With other words using that it prevents me from cutting too much off and unravelling the cup and the wrapper.
Pedro2486 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I find I've been using just my 9mm punch for pretty much every cigar, besides piramides, to excellent results every time. Ring gauges 42-56
Rye Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I have a few different punch sizes and tend to use the 11mm most. A double guillotine is always on hand, but I hate the V-cut. That one's not for me
Maplepie Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 i absolutely punch cut. why? because it's so darn convenient! Just on the end of my two main lighters are a 5 mm and a 9 mm. very practical and doesn't leave as much powdery tobacco residue. makes life easier this way...
