La Flor De Cano Corona - April 12th

post-5835-0-48228900-1397889682_thumb.jp

Box Code - EAR DIC 01

Source - A trade from a great friend on FOH - Thanks again for this one, Ray!

Discontinued - 2002

Abstract - Right about now you're thinking - "What's this jerk doing? That's a Marevas, a Petit Corona! It has no place here!" Strictly speaking, you're right, this is supposed to be a review of Coronas. However - even though its the wrong size, the FDC Corona has the right name......and there's no Corona-size cigar in the FDC Catalog, current or discontinued. Let's not discriminate just because some guy writing up the catalog got the size/name wrong in the 80s, and no one bothered to fix the problem, lets admit this Corona to the party and see what it brings to the table!

Pre-light impressions - The first thing that comes to mind is - Aged. Yes, I know the cigar is 13 years old - but it just has that aged visage - the wrapper's has just a hint of fade to it, and the band itself looks like something from the 1910's. I personally love it - but then again, I love old-timey stuff. I think it's the lettering of the JC - it just screams 19th century, doesn't it? The lettering around the band matches the 'font' of the SLR Corona too - those rounded balloon letters that look so cool and campy. Just awesome.

post-5835-0-94121200-1397889689_thumb.jp

How about the cigar itself? The aroma is very plesant - light, aged tobacco, with a little raisiny sweetness in there too. It's quite nice. The stick is firm, but not tight, and a glance at the foot shows a perfectly balanced pack. The wrapper's definitely on the thinner side, and slightly rough, but the residual oils make up for that roughness. She's putting out good oils, considering the age. This feels well-stored!

Pre-light draw/taste - A perfect draw, after a snip with the Palio - a slight resistance on each pull. The taste is very simple - a pure, aged tobacco flavour. So far, so good!

Accompaniment - Rosebank 12 Year (Flora/Fauna bottling). Something for special occasions!

First Third - Earrrrrrrrthy! Holy Mackerel, that's one dark, oaky forest! There's no better word than "Rustic" for what this cigar delivers in those first few puffs. Old School to the hilt! As I get past the intro, I start to note some cream on the aftertaste - it really lends some balance to the overall palate. At the same time, there's definitely some black pepper on the tip of the tongue, really spices it up. This cigar's got a nice range of flavours come out here!

Now well into the first third, and I gotta say I quite like this. The pepper and earth are definitely there, but there's also a milky smoothness that coats the palate, really reminds me of Montecristo for some reason. This works better than it does for Monte though, probably because it's got more charactor, more dark swathy energy than the Monte has. Here, the creamyness is working to balance something - with the Monte, it's just there hanging out.

This FDC is just pure Dusky, earthy pleasure. It reminds me of a friend and later girlfriend I had in High School and college. I've always had a thing for a girl with great curves, but with a little hint of a dusky voice (For a comparable mental image, think Emma Stone). This girl had 'em both...and let's just say I learned a lot from her in a bunch of ways wink.png...to me, she was all earthly pleasure, with that dusky voice to make the memory complete. Yeah, you never forget your first, I suppose. I've just never had a cigar with such a unique profile that brought her memory back to me!

Alright back to the cigar!

Middle Third - She's all oak and leather notes now. Still a very very pleasing cigar. I like that dark flavour profile, it's a lot like a Sancho Panza, but without the saltiness. Definitely a medium to full strength, and it's putting out lots of smoke to boot. The burn is great - nice even and crisp, and with a perfect little cone when the ash is removed.

post-5835-0-58960400-1397889698_thumb.jp

The Milky Smoothness is still playing a big role, complimenting that rich earth core. The years have been very kind to the FDC - there is no imbalances in the flavour profile, no off-notes....it comes off as a very well-balanced, even-keeled cigar. It's smoking like a champ!

The experience is heightened by the beautiful day outside - lots of birds chirping in the trees, the odd woodpecker knocking away at a tree in the distance, and I even spotted a little hummingbird too! It's the little things that come together to make the whole experience better, isnt it?

Final Third - With the band off, we're still going strong, with more oaky wood, joined by a hint of sweetness now. The power slowly grows in volume as we get closer to the end, but it's still not overpowering me. At last - I detect a flavour I'm surprised did not show up sooner - a floral note emerges! In the FDC's I've had in the past (Selectos, the UK Short Robusto RE), they have been defined by a core of floral notes, which (especially in the case of the Short Robusto) inter-played nicely with a range of sweet flavours and baking spices (cinammon, nutmeg etc). Here, I was surprised not to notice any floral taste until near the end, but it's certainly a welcome addition, and it only gets more prevalent as the end nears! By the time the cigar is put down for good, it's pretty much all I taste. Fascinating!

Final Thoughts - That was certainly unique! I was taken for a journey with this one, and it ended up being a nice stroll down memory lane. Until that floral note hit, I would not have picked this as an FDC - maybe an aged Diplo #1, or even a Sancho Panza from the mid 90s that had aged away all the saltiness. All that said, it was thoroughly enjoyable - I would definitely be on the lookout for more aged FDC.

Truth be told - this brings up an urge to track down one of those extremely hard to find FDC's from the early 90s - the Diademas, Gran Coronas, or the Short Churchills. For those that have smoked them - do they compare favorably to what I've noted here? Are they worth the huge price? If they are anything like this cigar, I'd certainly be interesting in finding out!

Overall Score - I'm putting this down as a 93. Everything I tasted was delivered to perfection, no doubt about that. At the same time, I guess I would have liked a little more vibrancy to the flavours. I'm probably nit-picking in saying that, because given the age, more vibrancy might have been to the detriment of the balance that worked so well. At the same time - It just felt like a 93 to me, so that's what I'll give it. I would absolutely smoke one of these again, if given the chance, and would definitely pick up a box if I saw one on the shelf in Andorra or somewhere.

And you know what - It was a worthy addition to the Corona Lineup, even if it wasn't a true corona-size. 'Nuff said!

Nice reviews Chris!

I never knew you were so hot for the SLR. I know I have some of the PC's around here somewhere, I wish I would have known you were so hot for them! Damn shame both PC's and coronas are so hard to come by… at least the ones that once were considered common!

Really nice reviews mate… It is reading great reviews like these that make me hungry for a cigar. Great job!

I may have to get some of my D-3's from Robs locker!

Chris,

Given the source, when I read the comment "This feels well-stored!", I just about fell out of my chair.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.

I'm glad the SLR scored so high because it is one of the most underrated marcas and not appreciated enough by people.

Le Hoyo Du Roi - April 13th

post-5835-0-39582100-1398311001_thumb.jp

Box Code - GSO MAR 07

Source - A Box purchased about 4 years ago from El Prez. It rested in my Czar locker until a few months ago, when I brought it home.

Discontinued - 2009

Abstract - We've done a lot of stronger-blended coronas to start this off - here we go for the milder side. One of the few "Le Hoyo" cigars that got the ax, Du Roi is one you almost never hear about. I don't get why - It's literally The Hoyo of the King, for pete's sake!

Pre-light impressions - Apologies - this one's going to be light on photos - looks like I wasn't very photo-minded that day LOL. The Du Roi smells about as expected - all light hay, grassy notes. It's a light colorado wrapper that seems about right, and the wrapper is lightly oiled, speckled, with a few small veins. There's a definitely crack in the foot, but I doubt this will affect anything - it'll get burned off soon enough.

I'll say this - I do not like this band. I don't quite know what it is, but for some reason, I just can't get around to liking the Hoyo Crest encased in a white band with almost no shape. I guess I just like bands with more shape to them. Give me the old Hoyo bands - the one with the crest prominent, or even those rounded ones the DC's and Churchills have - they look like proper bands to me. This one looks like the designer was catering to a lazy band producer.

Yeah, I know - you don't smoke the band. Fair enough. I'm just saying - I don't like it. Looks cheap to me.

Pre-light draw/taste - A good draw here - no resistance to note, but not a loose draw either. Flavour is that of fresh wood. Kind of an airy quality to the flavour - hopefully that goes away after lighting.

Accompaniment - Ballantine's 17 Yr. Jim Murray says this was World Whisky of the Year a few years back. I say he's got shares in Ballantine's or something - 'cause this ain't no stellar scotch! A perfectly drinkable dram - but no great shakes.

First Third - Right off the bat - we're into Almonds in milk. It's almost like a milky tea sort of taste. Certainly pleasant, and the taste is a full one, with no holes in the pallete - even then, it's a light taste, very mild overall. This Du Roi is definitely in character to start!

An inch in, and it's strengthen just a pinch, up to mild-medium. Lots of Dry Oak wood here now - but surprisingly, almost no sweetness. I'm shocked at that, hopefully it shows up soon, because that light sweetness is really a core flavour for Hoyos (at least in my opinion!). Now, it's showing something akin to a musty power - really out of the norm for this cigar....I'm really not sure what to think. We're up to medium now. I'm not smoking it fast, and it's not burning incorrectly. Very odd! I kind of wonder if this power indicates that this cigar has room to age, as it's true that the best Du Roi's I've had were ones in the 8-10 year range.

Now, the Almonds return, but still no sweetness. Hmm.....

More and more almonds with each puff, and at last some smooth cream emerges. No question now that it's a Hoyo!

Middle Third - Dry wood. Drrrrrry Wood. This cigar is totally discombobulated - it's got depth in the flavour, but no order to it, kind of all over the place. Weird stuff. The burn is on, draw has no problems, and the ash is certainly one of the lightest greys you'll ever see. If there is anything but Seco and Volado in this cigar, it's really not showing.

I don't know what to think right now. It's not quite what I expected - which is not necessarily a bad thing, for sure, but what I do taste isn't that impressive. More than halfway in, and it's just smooth and light. Toasted tobacco, and not much more. The king's letting me down.......

Final Third - What's the deal, Hoyo Du Roi? Finally showing a little bit of sweetness on the front of the tongue, but there's not much there to go with it - just a lot of low-down tobacco flavour....a taste that doesn't really belong.

An inch to go.......and that sweet candied almond taste finally makes a damn appearance! Where the heck were you, man? Too late to make that much of a difference.....this one's not worth burning my fingers on the end.

Final Thoughts - The best Hoyo Du Rois I've had were like eating those sweet candied almonds. There's never too much evolution to them, but it's such a milky smooth taste that you just don't care when you're smoking it - it's so delicious. This........wasn't close. A real head-scratcher, and I don't know that age will help. The fact that the candied almonds came out at the very very end is heartening, but not by much - it shouldn't take 5 inches to finally show up when it's the core flavour of the smoke. Age will definitely change this cigar, and likely take out some of the confusion of the blend, but only time will tell if it will reach the heights that some of the 03 Du Rois have reached. Sometimes when they've discontinued a Corona, they make great examples of it right up to the end (Dip 3 and Partagas Corona come to mind there). Here.....it tastes like they goofed up the Du Roi blend, and never really made an effort to fix it before axing the cigar. Disappointing.

Overall Score - An 83 for this disappointing Du Roi. I'm shaking my head as I write this. Really too bad, and now I'm wondering if the rest of my box are this under-whelming. I'll give 'em another year and check again.

La Flor De Cano Corona

I've only had several but remember them being tangy and juicy. The marca almost feels like an extension of the Fonseca line. See if you can tell the difference between LFDC PC and Fonseca Delicias.

My thoughts exactly! Sometimes that happens. I can't guarantee I can fit it in this month, but I'll certainly re-visit the thread next time I do try another HdM Du Roi. Is it a favorite of yours?

Gents, apologize for being late with the rest of the reviews - I've been able to find the time to smoke the Coronas - but sadly not yet the time to post up the reviews (thank God I keep notes!!)

Diplomaticos No. 3 - April 14th

post-5835-0-07874400-1399518504_thumb.jp

Box Code - Unknown

Source - I really don't know, to be honest. This single lonesome Dip 3 has sat in my Discontinued singles drawer for quite a while.

Discontinued - 2006. A black year for cigar discontinuations.

Abstract - I hate that HSA has axed nearly the whole line, as they're each fantastic in their own way. I love the earthy pleasure of a Dip1, the spicy sharpness of the Dip 4, and the "Hey don't forget about me!" Moxie of the Dip 5. The Dip 2's probably one of my favorite Pyramides, up there with the Upmann 2. PSP2 and SLR Pacificos. But the Dip 3? Still my favorite Dip. The only reason I havn't smoked this one sooner - it's my last bloody one and once it's gone - I'm not optimistic I can find more.......

post-5835-0-33545200-1399518507_thumb.jp

Pre-light impressions - This one looks like it's been to the war and back. A rougher sort of wrapper, with a bunch of little cracks here and there, and a foot that's seen a better day. Certainly beat up - probably some took a few black eyes arguing with my other discontinued singles when I wasn't looking. Say what you will about the non-embossed Disney-esque band - I like it. Unchanged since the 70's....and proud of it.

post-5835-0-60071200-1399518516_thumb.jp

Back to the cigar - the wrapper's on the drier side, but not dry per say. Lots of little bumps - definitely toothy. That said - it's a freaking good triple-cap they've laid on this one - well done to the roller here! A light perfume of aged tobacco wafts from the cigar. Not much else - but I don't mind.

post-5835-0-23412300-1399518519_thumb.jp

Pre-light draw/taste - A divot on the chop. Woooo! Draw's good, with a straightforward tobacco taste. I think we're in for a winner here.

post-5835-0-24548800-1399518522_thumb.jp

Accompaniment - Longrow CV. A discontinued expression from the boys at Springbank (replaced by the aptly named "Longrow"). Love the oily peatiness of this dram. I stocked up a bit before it was gone for good.

First Third - Well there's a spicy first puff. Playing some hardball right off the bat! I have entered the spice booth of a Middle East Souq - and I've gotten a little too close to the pepper! Spicy and sharp but not overpowering, and the paprika is off and running. Lots of rich smoke from each puff, and I have to say - great mouthfeel with each draw too. Y'know sometimes you smoke a cigar, and it puts off tons of smoke, but you taste almost nothing, like all the smoke is going out the wrong end? Not the case here. A dollop of rich pepper spice in every drag, the pepper is truly the core of the cigar. Not many that you find that in - normally a spicy cigar has a core of wood, or sweetness, or earth or something. The pepper is the base here, and it's unique and welcome!

My note here says "How is this a Monte Clone?" It's a fair point - Diplomaticos was initially meant to replicate the Monte blend at a lower price point. To me - that sounds kind of problematic - wouldn't that meant two prices for the same tobacco...why not just take the cheaper one each time? Also - why devalue the Montecristo brand that way? In any case - this is nothing like any Montecristo I've had - none have shown anything close to the spicy pepper, young or aged. And frankly - I'll take the Diplo 1 through 5 over the Monte 1 through 5 any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. If the two blends were brothers initially, they are certainly estranged now.

Back to the cigar - despite the cracks, it's performing admirably, with a good clean burn and wonderful depth of flavour. It's evolving towards different flavour paths too - now I get a crispy Ginger Snap taste, intriguing! Creamy notes start to emerge here and there, but the palate remains quite rich. After another inch, the pepper is nearly gone, astonishingly....what we have here is a spice muffin, with brown sugar on the top. I take by my "pepper core" statement - but I'm not unhappy to do so!

post-5835-0-36052900-1399518513_thumb.jp

Middle Third - Forget that appearance crap - this cigar is smoking like a champ. Cracks and all, the draw is spot on and the flavours are to die for. It's certainly smoothed out a bit now, becoming more refined. Kind of like a ruffian at a fancy party, who is told to shape up, so he goes to the side room, and emerges as a debonair smooth talker.

The flavours start to thin out juuuuust a tiny bit - it could be a little deeper at this point, but oh so smooth - like Cinammon Milk....if such a thing existed. Brown sugar comes through in waves now, and the pepper peeks out only on the tip of the tongue....glad to know it's still there somewhere.

Getting down to the final third, and the cream is taking the fore - where's the pepper? Where have you gone, Joe Dimaggio?

Final Third - Sweet milky tobacco now. This cigar is a journey, and not one you can really predict ahead of time. If you had told me I was going to taste cream in a Diplo, I'd have laughed my......well, I would have laughed a lot. But so it is!

But right around the band, and WHA-BAM! Hello Pepper! It's back in a big way, and with authority. I won't say it's overpowering the sweet smoothness, but it's definitely center stage now. At least I'm not crazy.....

This one was tasty to the end. I burned my fingers trying to get that last puff!

Final Thoughts - Another tear shed for the loss of a classic. It wasn't totally what I expected, and in that way, it was even better than I hoped. That evolution in a cigar's taste is one of the hallmarks of a Cuban cigar that I treasure, and why I will never latch on to NC's in a big way - the evolution keeps it interesting. Who wants to hear the same note for an hour and a half? Give me a symphony, with it's own intermediate melodies and rousing crescendos! I loved so much about what this Diplo 3 gave me, and will look to pay dearly (once I can afford it!) to find a box, or even a few singles. It's a classic.

Overall Score - A 96 for this winner. Only that lack of depth in the middle frame held it from a 98...But the evolution, man! The evolution is the difference maker here. A true winner!

This cigar in a word - Evolutionary!

Punch Corona - April 17th

post-5835-0-95532700-1399526440_thumb.jp

Box Code - an NISU box - can't remember the full code

Source - A '98 box I picked up in Malta in 2011, while deployed to the Med for the Libya war. A box sitting in the back of the closet that I spotted out of sheer chance. This is the last one from that box....

Discontinued - 2009

Abstract - Interestingly, Punch only ever had one Corona-sized cigar (by that I mean, one 5.6"x42RG) You name a vitola, Punch had at least a few different blends for that size. I find it odd. I hated Punch when I first started with cigars, but the sour stewed fruit taste they so often exhibit has really grown on me. Now, I love that flavour profile, and I'm always on the hunt for rare Punches. The've axed most of the line.....so most Punches are rare now.....

post-5835-0-08720000-1399526438_thumb.jp

Pre-light impressions - A handsome stick we have here. A darker wrapper here, and plenty of oils despite the age. A definitive box press on this stick - they were packed in there good and tight back in '98. The cigar's pretty firm throughout, but there's a little give in the head, so that's encouraging. The wrapper's bumpy despite the oils, with many small veins all over, but I wouldn't call it ugly. What's interesting to me is the complete lack of embossing in the band (or the appearance of no embossing). I find it fascinating that Punches from the last 15 years until recently seem to go back and forth with the embossing - one box will have have bands so flat you would swear they were never embossed, and others would be so beautifully embossed, with such minute detail that it'd bring a tear to your eye. Either way - I love the old band design. Especially the "RE" in the center......that I can never remember what it means.

And hey! The aroma is already of stewed fruit! I havn't even taken a draw yet!

post-5835-0-45131600-1399526443_thumb.jp

Pre-light draw/taste - Another divot - we are on a divot Roll here! The draw is pretty firm but it's okay. I can work with it. Taste is a brooding, dark mix of fruit with sweet aged tobacco. I'm listening....

post-5835-0-87336600-1399526445_thumb.jp

Accompaniment - Laphroaig Cairdeas. I bought two bottles when it was first released a couple years ago, thinking it was a limited release and I had better get in then before they sold out fast. Joke's on me - I still see 'em on the shelves today. Ah well, can't win 'em all. Screw them too - it's a good tasting whisky.

First Third - I should note - today I just went through the "Gas Chamber" at work - I had to get my check in the box for military CBRN Training, so earlier today I was in a hut full of tear gas, proving that I could mask up in the required time. Let's just say I handled it better than Keith did - if anyone remembers that shot of him smoking a cigar right after the hut, haha. Dude, the trick is to wash your face before smoking - that way you can taste the cigar LOL! Hey Keith, I'm just joshing you man, I'm sure the pepper spray would incapacitate me like everyone else LOL. Just maybe let's not find out! innocent.gif

Anywho - This cigar starts off with a rich, chewy tobacco taste. I don't mean the cigar itself is chewy, but the flavour is so deep, it's almost a tangible chewiness to it. Very tangy and dark, a sour candy almost, just not that sweet. I like it. Lotsa smoke billowing out, this is smoking very nice, the tightish draw is not hindering it. That dark sweetness has risen in profile and level, and it's quite light now - really sweet on the tongue.

Another few centimeters and it's all stewed chewy stone fruit - apricots and peaches. Just a marvelous flavour profile. It's quite a difference from the Diplo I had a few days ago, whereas that one started all pepper spice, this one's all "tang". I know "Tangy" isn't a real word (thanks, George Carlin), but that's what this cigar is, I have no other word to describe that pointed flavour on my tongue. Now I remember why I smoked through this box so quickly. It's just that good!

She starts to evolve as we get close to the 1/3rd way point - a but earthy here and a bit nutty there - peanuts, to be precise. The nutty profile's not on the forefront, but rather on the aftertaste, right on the back of the tongue. Damn, this is some tasty tobacco, smooth and flavourful

Middle Third - The middle starts off with an off note, kind of a sourness that isn't the norm for Punch. Sometimes that tang can seem sour, in a welcome sort of way (at least to my palate), but this is definitely an off note. Someone tell that violin to get back in tune with the orchestra!

It doesn't last, thankfully, and now I note a sweet cookie flavour emerging. Evolution, folks!

Actually, this evoution seems to be going a little haywire here - the smoke is almost perfume-like now. I've seen this on a few older Punches - I think it happens with the blend is not quite spot on, the age well but at some point in the cigar, you get this short period of discombobulation. I saw it in many of a box of '87 Punch Petit Punches. I'll get through it. Soon enough, a more woody sweetness comes to the fore and take charge, interspersed with some sweetness on the tip of the tongue. A bump in the road! Getting near the band, it's all rich, sweet and satisfactory.

Final Third - I've got "Caged Animal" written down, and with good reason - this cigar is reaching out to get me! Bright shoots of flavour come out every few pumps, almost like fireworks. This little puppy wants to play!

After about 5 minutes, the fireworks show dies down, and we're left with.......what we started with! Dark, stewed fruit flavour, back for the finale. The draw's gotten a little tight, but I can manage, and the final half inch yields a sweet wood overtone to go with the stewed fruit. With a little less than an inch left, I put 'er down, and the strength starts to build to "cymbals in my ear" power!

Final Thoughts - This one's a caged animal, alright. It had the evolution, and it had the characteristic Punch flavours. What it also had, was that interesting loss of control in the middle. I wonder why I've seen that in aged Punches. Does this happen across the line? I can't say I've had many pre-98 Punches beyond my box of Punch Petit Punches from '87, but I'd be interested to see if it's a marca-wide phenomenon - certainly something I've noticed in turn-of-the-century Punch Churchills (if you can get 'em to draw), Punch RS 11's, and Punch Petit Coronas. Maybe it's just a 98-01 blend thing. Anyway - it didn't define the smoke, but it's hard to really forget it. The only blemish on this cigar, really, as it delivered on everything else I could have asked for. Another Corona that deserved better than to be canned. Makes me curious how my '07 box in my Czar locker that Rob found me is doing....

Overall Score - A hard one to grade, but I'll give it an 89. So good in the first and last third, but that crazy middle frame has to play a role here.

This cigar in a word - Fireworks

Hey Everyone,

This was a fail on my part - Although all reviews are done and written down, I didn't have the time to post the rest (and name the best!) because my international posting to the UK took over my life for a few months. For that, I apologize.

The good news is - I took the tasting notes with me here in the UK, so once my flat is finally all set up, I'll get going on posting the rest of the reviews.

The BETTER news is - Here in London, I've been able to purchase the last two coronas I was missing from the survey, the Upmann and the Ramon Allones........SO, i'll be able to complete the set and do a final Overall Corona Standings.

Watch this space, and sorry again for the huge intermission there.
