Maybe right that the EPA didn't openly state it but did you also read the Forbes article (Which is the article I originally read and had in mind) . So I apologize that I blamed the EPA. But read both pages of the article and look at the sources and tell me what you conclude. Is it EPA? Environmentalists? Who?

"The EPA has recently banned the production and sale of 80 percent of America’s current wood-burning stoves"

"governments in some states have gone even further than EPA, not only banning the sale of noncompliant stoves, but even their use as fireplaces. As a result, owners face fines for infractions. Puget Sound, Washington is one such location. Montréal, Canada proposes to eliminate all fireplaces within its city limits."

Ahhhh, life with Harper as PM. Could it get any better?

I hate getting lumped in with cig smokers and dippers.

Also: "The Governor-General is paying more taxes: The only person in the country exempted from customs tariffs will lose that privilege. Last year, the government decided it was time the Governor-Gen

Don't joke about the cars. Over here the government run (AND ONLY ONE WE CAN USE) vehicle insurance company doesn't want any vehicles over a certain year on the road. Once in an accident that is reported to them the vehicle becomes irrepairable. I can't remember the year. But it's real stupid.

Somehow I think nice enough classics will slip through.

A friend just had a parcel intercepted by Canada customs with total fees of 278%. Interesting social decision making process...

We have to start educating tourists going to Cuba on how to buy legitimate CCs and have all of them bring back their two boxes each...innocent.gifstir.gif

i sometimes sit alone and think of all the evils in the world.

none more so than people not bringing back their full allocations in Cuba.

Agreed, wouldn't Facebook be a ripe tool to deal with that?

1- Reaserch members based on posting about future trip to Cuba

2- Befriend them and educate them.

3- Let 'friends' go and get back, then collect parcels.

I wish I was an evil mastermind sometimes instead of such a genuine good guy innocent.gif

From 1 January 2015 fireplace fires will be banned in Paris. There was a tolerance for "leisure" fires (ie, not means of heating) that will be deleted.

I see the point but such legislation is still harsh on the personal level. Can't stop progress...

You poor Canadian brothers. It's bad enough that taxes are already sky high plus the fact that you'll probably never win another Stanley Cup and now this.

My sympathies.

Man, you guys are making me sweat bullets! I just did an order and praying that I don't get hit at customs. That would be horrifyingly bad!

What difference if they tax cigarettes or cigars. It's not like taxing cigarettes is a good thing and you're being dragged in is the only problem. They shouldn't tax tobacco any more than they already have. That includes cigarettes too. It's funny how you get your panties in a bunch over cigars but you turn on people who smoke cigarettes like they're not important at all. What difference does it make. You shouldn't tax something 100s of percent of its original value because you feel it's unsafe. Blaming cigarette smokers is the stupidest thing you could do. The situation isn't going to get better either. They're just going to tax whatever they want as much as they want. They don't need our approval to tax the crap out of something.

Governments tax tobacco because they can and it's very lucrative for them. It's real easy low hanging fruit that no one argues against and with no lobbyist to defend it, these things are easily accepted. Most tobacco users are inundated by well funded anti-smoking campaigns to feel guilty for their habit, and many just accept the taxes. Thus, after many years of Federal and Provincial cash grabbing you have the crazy tax rates we have in Canada. Anyone who thinks this is a "health" issue is sorely mistaken. This is a revenue issue. The thing is, the more you tax a product like cigarettes, the more people will turn to contraband products. I think the Canadian Feds anticipated this by increasing amount to the RCMP for greater enforcement.

It worked out well.

Government engineers culture:

Bernays' Freedom Torch revolution of the early 1900s.

Government decries culture:

After embedding it so much into public mentality, they know it won't stop no matter how much anti-tobacco propaganda they fund.

Government maintains culture by ignoring the roots:

Attack the small guy. Ignore suppliers and root social causes. Keep demand up so people won't mind a high cost in supply.

Same has happened with :

Hard drugs, alcohol, prison system, oil, milk, etc.

The amount that they charge is so arbitrary it's ridiculous. I've been hit with $1600 for a box of Partagas SDC, and $8 on a box of Siglo V, and everything in between. Pretty humorous.

$1600?! That's straight robbery.
