kiwicrusaders Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Don't judge me, but one of my favourite tastes that I get, one of the main ones that I can actually pick up, is that grassy warm summer hay taste. To memory I have got it in SLR Regios and I'm pretty sure I got it in the PLPC. Can those with a more educated palate the mine let me know which marcaes / vitolas have that profile as a main profile?
El Presidente Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 La Gloria Cubana, Vegueros No 2, young Cohiba.
shlomo Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 never tasted grass or hay in a regios or plpc, but vegueros and young cohiba for sure.
Smallclub Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 never tasted grass or hay in a regios or plpc, but vegueros and young cohiba for sure. +1. And I'd add H. Upmann and Sancho Panza.
beamer Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 First thing that came to mind were a few young Cohiba Robusto that came in a sampler from here a few years ago. Grassy warm summer hay through and through.
CaptainQuintero Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Cohiba for me, strong hay/grass/herbs for the first few years
ogus Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 young siglo cohiba is like rolling on your fresh mowed lawn
bogglor Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Grass/hay to me is the dominant flavor in young CoRos and to an extent a little bit in young Siglo VI. I didn't get it with a young Siglo IV that I had relatively recently, that one tasted more like a VR Unicos with less fully defined flavor.
mk05 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 ...grassy warm summer hay taste...in SLR Regios and ...PLPC. This tells me that you either smoked these in their respective sick periods, or that you are not describing the profile correctly to be understood by people with experience in these two cigars. That said, I think I understand what you are saying. The Regios, when very young, can have a borderline hay-like taste, but it is rather a rich tobacco feel, accompanied by a citrus and slight honey finish (this would translate to caramel and for some, vanilla) that is trying to peek out underneath the heavy youthful tannins. In its sick period, this can move to even becoming rather herbal, so I can see both accounts. The PLPC, for a while, took many years to get ready - even 2008's are nowhere near ready to smoke. This changed in 2012 when these cigars were surprisingly ready ROTT. The 2012 PLPC's profile is not at all like PLPCs that are aged and ready to smoke, ie the '02 and '04s. The '12s are very upfront in rich tobacco and there is nuttiness there, with perhaps a little bit of vanilla, whereas aged PLPCs are very heavy in mocha, caramel, and sugarcane. The PLPCs in sick period are very straightforward in the sour tobacco and spice category, so I can see where you are going there as well. If I had to distill your preference, you are trying to describe a rich tobacco flavor with a nuttiness that brings fullness and a roundness to the profile. These two marcas - imo - are from two distinctly different lineages of marcas, so the quality of tobacco and nuttiness/caramel taste are different. That means there is no logical progression like staying in a lineage, ie LGC and Bolivar to Partagas. If I had to say one, I would point you towards the poor man's Dunhills, the aged RyJ Exibition #4's, as that cigar has all the qualities.
kiwicrusaders Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks for all the responses. I must say I do find myself sitting here tetying to classify what flavours I'm picking up... and do struggle to pinpoint it sometimes. It's not that I can't puckup taste...just can't really accurately label them. I like the suggestion of the R&J, have been hearing good things recently.
mk05 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 RyJ as a marca has various sub-blends. Make sure to stay within the Exibition line for what you seek. Edit: actually, I think the Short/Wide Churchills might be good for you too. They also have a rich tobacco taste, although it isn't dark and deep as the Exibition tobacco taste, more bright and fruity.
Philski Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 The PLPC, for a while, took many years to get ready - even 2008's are nowhere near ready to smoke. I have no experience with recent PLPCs, but I treasure my steadily ageing cabs from >10 years ago more than most.
