3 days ago at Belharra reef, off the coast of France, this happened...

The humungous wipeout on a 60 foot wave is Jamie Mitchell from Coffs Harbour.

The group's reaction towards the end of this little edit is priceless.

Thought I would share.

Enjoy.

P.S. maximise the screen

Thanks for sharing that, love watching surf as much as doing it and that's some breathtaking stuff and worth the look....

Great Video!!! Love to surf. Been riding since i was a kid in SD and continue to this day. Never had a wipeout like that! Then again I have never surfed anything even close to that big. Double over head was my max comfort and I wasn't very comfortable in that.

Man that's some Patrick Swayze wave right there. Where the hell does he go when he comes of that wave the size of that thing!?!

Would you need a special board no doubt for something this big? No that I'm keen just curious...I'll stick to the shore breaks thanks.

Great video

Wow, simply awesome... thanks for posting. I didn't know about that break and that France could get waves like that. I sure miss living in Hawaii... LOL

I use to ride a Mctavish Mini mal for some 20 years. These days I have reverted back to my performance goat boat "Surf Ski" of 30 years. Use to compete in Surf Ski, these days it is just a matter of catching a great ride, eskimo roll, and back out again. I am a lazy bastard lol3.gif

Hey bro, it all depends on the type of break/reef and where they are situated on the wave at any given time as to where they go when they bail. If you are in the lip or you get carried over the falls, then you are going to end up pretty deep, unless it is a super shallow reef, then you are going to get pile driver into the bottom.

On big swell like this, on a deep reef, he would have gone pretty deep and washed around. Towards the end of the clip you can see his wetsuit is all puffed up. This is a fairly recent development in big wave wetsuit technology. When you get held under for a while, you can pulled the ripcord and tiny gas cylinders inflate a small lifejacket type insert and you pop to the surface quicker, so you don't drown. surprised.gif Some crew just straight up wear a lifejacket when its this big, but usually for tow-in surfing where they don't need to paddle on the board. And that is what is so awesome about this session...these guys were paddling in!!! So the boards they are riding are what you call Guns. Just super sized boards, that are longer, and heavier. Like a Malibu, but built for speed and performance.
