Afternoon all, and apologies for a lot of questions about the SLR marcae at the moment, but trying to make up my mind about my next purchase. The Regios to date has been hands down my favourite cigar ... What I wonder is, what is it's aging potential and does it start to loose its beautiful flavour after 2 years.... Which was hinted at on a video review done by Rob. Interested in people's thoughts.

I thought they dont age very well. To be honest i'm not very familiar with regios, but i've had a few when it was young and it was good but after about a year or so wasnt that good.

SLRs are very different. It's not that it becomes flavorless, it's that certain aspect of the profile drops off and others are revealed. Had some '02 Regios and they were different. The very upfront SLR citrus goes away and reveals more of a Bolivar PC flavor.

Anyone else have some experience with these? Do they have a sick period? What is your preferred aging for them? Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

My most recent box purchase of Regios has the box code of FEB 13. The first three I smoked were fantastic with big Chinese spice and hot mustard flavor that lasted for hours on my palate after I was done smoking! The last three didn't have much flavor at all, maybe the box is starting it's sick period.

Sick = fermentation = amonia

When the cigars from a box become bland they're not "sick", they're entering a "dull" period…

Curious. Once a box has entered a "dull" period, will they continue to evolve and regain flavor?

Oh my God!!! Here we go again!

Mate, if you like the Regios, buy the Regios! There are no rules to this aging game except a bunch of BS created by the collector community to explain why the cigar you bought from them tastes like crap when they said it was wonderful! While I don't want to trash another thread with flinging feces over this topic, there are only opinions, no better nor worse than your own. No one knows how the cigars in your humidor are going to age! If you like them, buy them! There is no quantifiable evidence nor proof that the cigars that you like today will be any better or worse in the future.

Why not be able to smoke the cigars you enjoy along their way to this utopian land of the aged cigar? Do yourself a favor, buy the cigars you like and smoke them while you are alive and can enjoy them!!! There is no reason to 'wait for cigars.' Smoke the good ones when and while you can!

I have nothing against aging cigars. I just cannot stand watching people make stupid decisions base on junk science. I mean would you really buy a cigar that you don't like because a collector says that they are the best ones to age??? If the guy at the used car lot said the poor finish on the car you like will change back to a shiny new in a year or two would you believe him or laugh at him? The spirit of the snake oil salesmen of the 19th century is alive and well in the modern cigar collector.

A final note. I see the folks here giving advice based on their experience and good intentions. I am in no way deriding these members or their opinions! I offer mine with the same intentions. I am not inferring that those that give advice here do so for nefarious reasons. I understand and respect their opinions. Mine is just cut from a different cloth and therefore derives a different conclusion.

If someone here has a crystal ball, the one you use for cigar aging… please lend it to me, because I would like to use it to trade S&P index futures. In short order I will be happy to buy you all the aged cigars your hearts desire as payment for its use!

Yes. The example I always give is the Partagas D4 in the early/mid 2000's: they were good fresh, then the amonia was emerging and the cigars were unsmokable for a few months, and when this sick period ended the cigars were often bland and needed some time to recover all their flavors.

Got it, Thanks for clearing that up smallclub!

I bet you are a fun guy to hang out with....NOT!!!!!

You remind me of my father....a Huge BUZZKILL!!!

Had a regios from the 07' 50 cab.

Tasted great, heeps of sweetness.

I wiuld say buy them now and smoke them now if you like them. Aging them for 1-2 years wont do much, def not worth your time aging a box of that for 5+ years. Also, you better find a box cab for aging.

If they taste good now, smoke them now. If they dont and your stuck with it, then put them aside and check on them once every season or half year.

Follow up in the form of a general question, do ALL boxes go through some form of sick and dull period? That is if one has not smoked them all ROTT.... biggrin.png

Must we get personal? I guess we must!

Seeing that you require a 'buzz' to enjoy life and have a father complex, it would appear to me that your opinion is worth very little!!!

Still upset that Santa did not leave you a new version of Grand Theft Auto? Or, maybe my post just fouled up a deal where you were going to swindle some neophyte with overpriced old cigars!!! What a shame!

My apologies that your reality sucks!

Cheers!

Well, Ladies and Gents, a more powerful argument regarding guru following group think I could not find if had to pay for it. This is a prime example of the mindset, the logic, the reaction to those who challenge it!

Mods, I hope you will leave this exchange up. I have no intention of taking it further. My point is made without saying another word!!!

Cheers all! -LOL

Hi PigfFish, I understand that you have an opinion and I respect that you disagree with "aging" cigars. We are a community here and I am interested in other members experience with this cigar. I have a box from Feb of this year and I smoked one last night and I was not pleased with it, but I had been in the recent past. I think I am entitled to ask what others experience is with this cigar. Isn't that why we are here? Some people like to collect and age cigars, some like to smoke them and others both. We should respect what ever they do as long as they are contributing. My question is quite reasonable and I asked about members "preferred" aging, which may be none with this cigar. I don't think I am going to smoke these cigars as fast as I want to and I would like to know what others have experienced with it. Frankly, I was hoping for someone who smokes these and has been for some time, to provide whatever insight they have on these. Thanks!

Wow, this thread took a turn...

I love good Regios, and tend to prefer them while they are fresh. Cigars do tend to mellow as the tobacco "marries" and these I prefer with the edge still on them. I smoke many Regios, and I always prefer the taste of a fresh box over the leftovers from the last.

This reminds me, I need to restock my Regios! Hey Prez, what are the freshest in stock?? ;)

My responses address your questions directly. Buried in my comments and in my thousands of posts are reflected the facts about how Cuban cigars are produced. There are not dedicated factories, no real competition between brands and the consistency that you buy in a box is based on the reflected light as seen by the man or woman that sorts them for color.

How then can anyone in good conscience tell you about your cigars? Sure, they can share experiences with you as many a member will. I see nothing wrong in that, nor do I criticize it.

Mate… there are no crystal balls nor cigar gurus! There is as much proof, I mean real hard facts on aging potential as there is the God Zeus!

The honest to God best advice I can give you, is smoke what is good and try to enjoy the best possible smoking experience when you light one up. Don't follow… Lead yourself! Advice and input is great, but advice on aging is joke at best!!! (***)

What is flawed in the advice of buying cigars that are good now and smoking them now and into the future? Is that not really the best advice on this topic that one can give? What is wrong with me advising anyone to buy what they like, because what they like is really what is most important to anyone buying cigars. Is that logic flawed? If so how? I mean why would you trust me, or anyone over your own taste? Is my opinion more important than your own taste? If I had the guts to tell you that the cigars you like age poorly, would you not buy them again??? Do you really think that would be a service to you? Would you not even for a moment think, "How the hell does that guy know how my, or any box of cigars are going to age?" It is a healthy question to ask, is it not?

You mean to tell me, that if I told you that I have a great box of SLR A's from '01 that it will have any bearing on the cigars that you are smoking now? It has no bearing at all! Each cigar is different. Boxes of cigars are different, years are different. The only thing that remains the same is that they are always going up in price!!! -LOL

You can refuse my advice if you would like. You can reject it because it goes against the grain of the collector community… My advice, while I am biased towards it, is in reality no better nor worse than that of any other. It is just one man's opinion!

Here is a little challenge for you. If you want to learn the most about cigars you need to not make excuses for them! Take a box of the ones you like and smoke through the whole damn box in a week! Yep… Best advice I can give.

In that week you will find the differences in the individual cigars that will explain and explain away every way-out theory you have ever heard about cigars. You will likely see your cigars get sick and miraculously heal in one day!

Is it optimism that speaks when one says that their cigar is 'sick' rather than just bad? Perhaps that is why I am "not fun to hang out with." I would rather see reality than illusion. I buy cigars based on reality… not illusion! The best advice I can give, what I follow, is to smoke the best cigars I can every time I sit down to smoke.

If what you want is for me to feed into the myth, well, I am not the guy! There are plenty of others here that will tell you your cigars are sick and then they won't be the minute you smoke another good one!!! Doesn't this theory of momentary cigar difference smell of mendacity just a little?

I am sorry… but the who premise of the process is comical! I am truly sorry that most folks don't see the comedy of the belief! It is a religion above all.

Best of luck to you on your smoking journeys! -Piggy

Thanks guys! I think I put these "on deck" and smoke them quicker than I had planned. I'll keep a few aside for "heuristic" evolutionary assessment.

To the OP. I would look for maybe some senior members advice. Try to maybe see if El Pres has addressed it. Maybe Ajay Patel. These guys can give you some awesome advice that you will be able to take to the bank. They know their stuff and I would trust them to buy my cigars for me...
