I've been considering purchasing a decent ashtray but then had the greatest idea ever...

I give you, the Mortar!

What do you guys use? Actual ashtrays?

Get a spare tubo, cut out 2 1"-1.5" long sections and split them down the centre. Glue the 1"-1.5" half tubes to the mortar to create a holder for your cigar.

Not a very good shot, and I could not be bothered loading again. However the glass one cost me a dollar at some market stall and it is my favourite, has a single malt scotch colour to it . It probably weighs more than the other three combined, It's a really cool ashtray and I use almost every day.

Won a couple of ceramic branded ashtrays, but never use them. I love the solo antler ashtray/backscratcher I made awhile back. I am working on another with more saddles on it.

I thought this was still about the Hotel Nacional ashtray but I see it's about ashtrays in general.

So having to go into the cellar today to pick up cigars for this week-end's big herf, I took some pictures of mostly unused ashtrays in my collection.

But first my go-to daily ashtray I use permanently - it's a Mexican-German mix, the top being from Mexico City and the bottom a carved out piece of century old hard wood from a wine vat.

I love it :

Then some others I keep at home in case friends come over :

A vintage Cubana Airlines ashtray I picked up in Havana this year :

And some pieces I keep unused in my cellar - a fine piece from La Casa Cubana in Singapore :

Plus some more ashtrays that are unpacked, have been given over to the pharmacy for use there or given away to friends ...

My every-day ashtray it the following one:

I usually smoke alone so it's enough. When I have friends I use a bigger one.

But what I want to show you is my big dump:

I know it is not pretty but it is effective.

When it is full I take another 5 liters water bottle and start over.
