First Cuba Trip (Day 2 evening)

Recommended Posts

The wife and I headed to Habana Vieja late afternoon, early evening on Saturday. We dropped off near the Cathedral plaza and started walking around. Im kinda lazy, so I jumped on the idea of a bicitaxi. We did that for at least 1.5 hours seeing almost all of old Havana. Just a few of the pics I took are attached here.

We also witnessed a pretty cool thing. We were on some back street in old Havana, and we heard the drums and other percussion typical of a Santeria ritual. We walked up two flights of steps (steps that nobody should walk up much less me) to get to an apartment that had about 40 people in it - it was maybe 400SF. It was true sensory overload. I didnt take photos as I felt it would be rude of me to do so. A mixture of kids, adults and older folks, packed to the gills, humid with sweat, smells of burning candles and the droning percussion. In the middle was a woman dancing in such an entracned state. We stayed for a bit and queitly left after thanking our host. What an experience.

We stopped at a paladar but didnt eat there as they wanted 20 CUC for ropa vieja. We hit the Saratoga hotel which is accross from the capital and absolutely beautiful but the food was awful.

Here are some pics of old Havana.

This is making me miss it so much. That place truly gets in your blood. Thanks for bringing back some great memories. I hope to go back one day, but my fear is that it will changed so much it just won't be the same. I hope the Cuban people don't get shut out of the prosperity that will be a tidal wave over that island once the change comes.

Great stuff. From the photos you share, it almost looks frozen in time. Other than my desire to go someday, my knowledge of Cuba as an American is limited. Is there much tourism? Is it a welcoming environment? Rushman, no need to respond to my questions, you need to be soaking it all in!! If anyone else would like to reply, I'd appreciate it. Thx B&SOTLs
