Hey guys-

I'm a non-drinker but I plan on enjoying a night out tomorrow for dinner and cigars with some friends who do in fact drink. They are not cigar smokers really. Some have smoked cigars from time to time and most recently I handed out a few Upmann Mag 46's to the same group and they seemed to enjoy that cigar.

I think for tomorrow I'll set them up with a RASS and was wondering for those that drink, what kind of beverage do you think would go well with this cigar? My buddies are more beer inclined. We live in San Diego so the micro brew culture out here is huge and these guys love that stuff although any suggestion is welcome.

Any help with that would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and if you have any interesting non-alcoholic suggestions, I'm all ears! I usually go with coffee, but want to try something different. Maybe iced tea or something. Not sure yet.

Thanks again!

I pair cigars with iced tea frequently, and also a club soda with a splash of lime (the real stuff, not the pop mix) and find it very refreshing. Enjoy your evening!

Ice Tea is an excellent choice - light and cool but not enough to burry the taste of the cigar. As for beer - I've found a porter or stout really enhances the tobacco flavors, red wine never works for me in the summer. Whiskey or rye with a few ice cubes is nice. I lived in San Diego years ago, and loved the ocean scent along with a smoke, nothing like the sound of waves and a fine cigar to set the world right.

enjoy.

Yamazaki 12( 18 too rich for me :)

***** 12 is also a great choice.

Beers wise I would go with something like a porter, scotch ale or even a Trappist...in that field of beers. . Just not IPA, Wheat or Pilsner

Tea is always great with cigars, kemun, earl Grey darjeeling and on and on, a lot of nice variations to choose from - but might not satisfy your friends.

I addition to the beers already mentioned I could add hefe weise - wheat beers that is not too hoppy

I smoked a RASS yesterday paired with my homebrewed Russian Imperial Stout.

It was a very awesome combo.

If are you heading to brewpub/gastropub type spot, I'd recommend an RIS or a porter.

I randomly paired a cigar with Horchata a few months ago and found that they pair quite nicely together. Nice, cold, sweet and sugary - plus in San Diego, it's pretty much sold everywhere.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies thus far. This is great. I think I'll probably venture towards ginger ale or iced tea for myself and perhaps recommend a porter or stout.

Appreciate it amigos!

Just curious; why don't you like IPA, wheat beers, or Pilsner with RASS? You're eliminating a big chunk of the beer universe there, and one of my particular favorites (Pilsner Urquell with RASS is a staple)

I like those kind of beers in general but I find that an IPA, for example, is clashing with the flavors of a RASS. I like to have the drink scoop up the cigar...best way I can describe it. Well that is my opinion but everyone tastes differentparty.gif

p.s. I never tried the Pilsner Urquell might change my mind!

I have to agree that highly hopped beers generally do not work well with cigars, they tend to overwhelm.

Belgian Trappist Abbey ales and the likes however do wonders...

Fair enough (although I disagree; I love IPAs with cigars, particularly strong, rich cigars), but wheat beers and pilsners are not highly hopped beers.

I too am a huge fan of IPAs with cigars. Hoppy beers are fine on my palate with a cigar, even some of the heavier hopped up beers work. Pilsners, wheat beers, porters and stouts are all good. Where it gets tricky is when you get into some of the more exotically flavored craft brews infused with different fruits, etc.

Contrary to what many people say, I like red wine with cigars as well. Champagne is fantastic with a cigar. Then there are your staples like scotch and rum. Tequila works as well, but I'd stick with a reposado or anejo.

Tea is a great suggestion, sweet or not, both work well. I find the more delicate the tea the better.

As for the carbonated drinks...can't beat Coke Zero in my opinion.

I think you could pretty much ask "What drinks pair well with cigars?" Rass is typically powerful enough to stand up to any drink any other cigar will, yet subtle enough not to overpower drinks other cigars wouldn't. I may be in the minority but I find a particular drink is generally either good with all cigars, or good with none of them.

As far as beer goes, I enjoy most beers with cigars. I agree with some others that the hoppy stuff doesn't work quite as well for me but I still drink hoppy beers while smoking quite frequently. For me, the creamier stouts and ales work better with cigars but all are enjoyable.

For other drinks, I prefer crisp and refreshing (not sweet) during the summer. Gin/Soda, Vodka/Soda, Chardonnay, Champagne, Johnnie Walker Black on the rocks with a splash, etc. During the winter, I prefer rich and smoky (again, not sweet). Islay Whisky, Bourbon, both neat. I don't think red wine ever works great but that doesn't stop me from the occasional accompaniment.

My favorite drink with cigars in the summer is definitely sweetened iced coffee preferably with caramel syrup, cream and sugar. Something about coffee and cigars be it hot coffee or iced coffee
