frenchkiwi Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 These guys are coming to NZ to play, i've got free tickets so i'm going. I thought i'd ask the Aussies here for tips on who the sides are, what they stand for, why they should be loved and hated and by whom. How should they be sledged from the grandstand etc. (Don't worry about the rules, i've actually played plenty of AFL but could never muster the enthusiasm to watch more than 5min on telly) It will be hard to enjoy it without this cultural info, especially with Fosters promotions in the bars etc. Many thanks.
Ken Gargett Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 the key principle is to hate anything, well at least any sporting team, from nsw (only thing that makes me cheer for a kiwi side is when they play nsw). hence, one must detest the swans no matter who they are playing. the exception is if they play collingwood who are hated lowlife, yes, i know pies fans will get excited but... think of them as the dallas cowgirls of the afl. but as they are not playing, keep it simple and boo the swans. i'll post a pies photo if i can find it. and please excuse the language. or don't go further if you might be offended. yes, i know...
Wil Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Great that they're playing a game in NZ, and that you're going! The Swans are the reigning premiers. Originally South Melbourne, but moved up to Sydney in the early 80s. The last few years they've been known as a tough, hard team. Great at winning contested ball, but they generally play a low scoring and congested brand of footy. Not necessarily the nicest football to watch, but they are always competitive. The Saints, well... What can you say about the Saints? Played in the 2009 and 2010 Grand Finals (the 2010 GF was a draw, replayed and won by the filth the following week). Unlucky not to win one. Now 'rebuilding'. Expect the Swans to win relatively easily. Enjoy the game!
bobbutcher Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 havn't the saints been rebuilding since 1966 lol ...enjoy the game mate, hope it is a good contest.
frenchkiwi Posted April 23, 2013 Author Posted April 23, 2013 brilliant - i remember hearing this about collingwood supporters somewhere. Also reds supporters see "Reds do it at the Death" video here and watch the post try celebration carefully for familiar faces ;-)

dicko Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 The saints are the princess's of the afl. The swans play tough, team orientated footy. Collingwood are the greatest team in the afl
