Andrew11 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 did I hear someone say koa guitars up above? That's my other passion. Here's one of mine from custom builder Kevin Ryan. All koa 12 string guitar, with his acoustic arm bevel. Now that is NICE!!!!
kyee Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 And here's the 6 string all koa guitar I recently picked up.

Beautiful looking guitar Couple questions: is the bottom a little wider then a standard 6-string acoustic guitar or is it just the angle of the picture that is making it look that way to me and how do the extra holes along the side of the body affect the sound?
IcedCanuck Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 And here's the 6 string all koa guitar I recently picked up. Another beautiful guitar!!! The vine going up the fret board looks real nice and I definitely dig the stain they finished the body up with. The knobs/switches on the top of the body make me think it is an electric acoustic.

Yes, I had the guitar built with a slightly deeper body. All koa guitars tend to lack a little in the bass department, and 12 string guitars have thinner gauge strings, so the deeper body helps to give it the extra low end it needs to balance out the sound. The extra holes are this luthier's version of a soundport, which helps the guitar player to better hear what their guitar sounds like. sort of like having stage monitors built into the guitar. it does not detract from the sound in front of the guitar, but definitely helps the player hear themselves a lot better. Many of the boutique guitar builders are incorporating this feature now. One of the best ergonomic options on this guitar is the arm bevel, especially on a large body/jumbo size guitar like this one. It helps take the pressure of the sharp edge of the guitar on your forearm, making it more comfortable to play. When I switch to one of my other jumbo guitars that doesn't have the arm bevel, i really notice it at that time. If you feel like reading up on these innovations from Kevin Ryan, here are some links. This is a Taylor K28e all koa guitar, the model just came out a couple of months ago. I'm usually not a fan of burst/stain designs on a guitar, but this one was just calling out to me.

I think, for me anyway, being able to see the wood grain as predominately as you can is what makes it look nice.
Andrew11 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Very nice Kyee, I just love Koa. Agree 100% with the arm bevel, reason I could never get into acoustic's is found them way to uncomfortable.
Reevzy Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Reevzy awesome grand concert, love it!!! The Family Pic Ibanez Apex1 7 string Jackson Soloist Custom ESP Horizon NT7 7 string 1976 Gibson Les Paul Custom I've been thinking about getting an ESP for a long time now. I've moved away from wanting the most metal looking guitars. I'd want some sort of single cut job, they have a nice looking semi hollow body with a bigsby type bar on it. In saying that, I think the worst thing ESP ever did was to stray away from the original MX shape and "sharpening" it up with the EX range. Given the chance........ and the money, I would LOVE to own a limited run for the almighty James Hetfield MX220 from 1987 in Olympic white. It does look like an 80's glam guitar but it's instantly recognisable to any Metallica fan from the 80's and 90's.

I like how you had the deep body made. Koa is the most beautiful wood but as a tone wood, I hear real strong mids and not much bass and treble. Great way of solving that with the deep body and the jangle of a 12 string. Really cool instrument! Congrats man, I'm sure you will cherish that for years to come.
petejames Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Guitars...love `em.....here`s a couple of my faves.....

They do have the hetfield signature but not much of a fan of sig guitars. Of course unless its a dimebag sig. Lol

Lol Ditto on the signature series although I would not say no to one of his Razorback signature series guitars for sure! I also would not say no to a Steve Vai 7-string JEM series signature model axe either lol
gr8tdanz Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Here's a couple pics, I have more but don't want to get too crazy. I'm working on a Cuban themed guitar, I'll post pics once it's built. Some good looking guitars out there!
