Upmann2009
When I open the box, I notice there are few (1-4) pinhead insecct(?) on each cigar. It will pop when touch and feel like water/paste (remember its only a pin head but I try to be specific here). The fact that its very small so no photo taken. What's is this and how to get rid of it or prevent from spreading? Will it do any major damage to the cigar in long term (2-5 years)? Any input will be much appreciated. Chris7
Purely from what I have read on FOH I would recommend freezing them for a few days as a lot of people seem to do this. I believe it is better to put them in the fridge for a day to adjust before freezing them and then back in the fridge for a day after freezing them. I haven't done it yet myself, but certainly will in the future just for extra security. I'm sure others with more experience freezing the will chime in here with some useful tips/best way of doing it. Edit: as far as preventing them spreading,I would keep them as far from your good cigars as possible until they have been sorted out.
Wil
If they are tiny, white and move quickly they are most likely wood mites.
Ryan
This was my very first question on any cigar forum (cigar aficionado it was) about 7 years ago. Tiny and white, with legs, and about the size of a grain of pouring salt, that's wood mites. I got a dose of them and took about 18 months to finally get rid of them. Everything out of the humidor, inspect, freeze if you like. Clean out the inside of the humidor thoroughly. What I remember is that they like moisture, they'll be in your humidifier, you'll probably need to change that. I made "traps" for them with a little jar (plastic tub, screw off top with holes in it) filled with moistened humidity beads/gel. Stick double-sided sticky tape around the entire circumference of the jar and leave it in the humidor, you'll trap them. They won't damage your cigars but very annoying. Best of luck. If you have active humidification, of course you don't want to throw that out. But you'll need to replace it for a while, let it dry out thoroughly, if you can. They should leave. El Presidente
Wood mites hate the light. Open your humidor and boxes to sunlight for half a day and they will move on.
stargazer14
"Open your humidor and boxes to sunlight for half a day and they will move on." Wow, its amazing how much wood mites are like kids home from college.
Upmann2009
Hi, Thanks all for quick response, the jar trap sound good, will do that. My wineador infested so I have to open all boxes (approx 20) to sunlight and finger crossed. Freezes? I don't have that luxury I don't think my wife will be happy if I stuff the fridge with cigars.
