ayedfy Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Recently got this in a C.U.N.T.A.S. sampler with a Montecristo 520 and a Bolivar Inmensas (both of which I hope to review at a later date). Not really sure what to expect from this one. Cohíba Piramides Extra. Box code unknown. Vitola size: 6.2x54. Cold Observations: Impeccable construction, perfect wrapper. Woody and somewhat sweet, mild aroma at the foot. Draw is a little on the loose side. Cold draw is pretty flavourless, moreso than what I'm used to. It's not giving anything away - I have no idea where this cigar is about to take me. First third: Immediate blast of spicy oak and white pepper in a medium-full bodied opening. Didn't see that one coming. Somewhat young tasting. After a few puffs it mellows out slightly, allowing a decadent creaminess and fresh lime citrus to move in. Second third: A small shift upwards to a full body. A little more wood and spice, slightly less cream now, and the fruity sweetness is transforming from the tangy citrus into juicy stewed pears with a hint of avocado saltiness. Final third: The bizarre avocado note carrying through, creating an interesting creamy/salty juxtaposition. Quite woody still, with truckloads of oak and cedar, while the fruitiness has receded significantly. I've heard mixed things about this one, but the feedback I've read trends towards disappointment or indifference (funny how this is a common reaction to many expensive/premium cigars). I personally loved it though. Overpriced? Sure, but this is Cohiba - it comes with the territory. For such a young cigar, this is hitting quite close to the mark. I think with a few more years, this could be incredible. 93/100
ayedfy Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 In that pic it looks like the cigar is absolutely massive! Stewed pears and avocado? Sounds delicious! LOL Thanks for the review! Going back to look it up I noticed it's a 54 ring gauge instead of a 52 so that could make it look bigger. Or it could be that I have delicate womanly hands. Hopefully the former. The stewed pears are quite subtle but it was the closest I could describe the change in sweetness in the middle third there. It moves away from the citrus but it was hard to place. The avocado note was quite prominent for me though. I love avocados but I'm not accustomed to tasting them in cigars!
Puros Y Vino Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Good review. I've had a couple of these myself. Very nice cigars indeed. A bit on the mild/medium side but very promising.
mbrody Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Thanks for the review. Of the two I have had, one was just Sublime. Most memorable Cohiba in a long while. The other was good, but nothing to rave about when taking price into the equation.
Deemancpa Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Thanks for the review, as I've smoke two so far and a Cohiba fan.. it was just ok for me, maybe the expectations were so great and I wanted it to be something that it is not. I'd rather buy more Behikes.
maverickdrinker Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I think that they were ok. Reminded me of a Cohiba Siglo VI in a piramide format. Would prefer a Siglo VI vs. this, based on vitola.
Diamondog Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I think this is a good cigar but positioned in a very tough price point. Interesting HSA would put it there. No doubt it is a massive cigar with a lot of tobbacco but there is stiff competition at this price point for Cohibas and a Sig VI at halfish the price becomes all the more tempting. Hmmmm wonder if Sig VI sales have increased with this release...
ayedfy Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 Its only priced 1.50 cuc more than the sig 6 bro. The price is in line with all that they have done recently imo. Really? It's almost double here ($60 for a PE vs $35 for a Sig VI). That's $5 more than a BHK 54.

Not sure what CUC prices are for the CPE/Sig VI but those prices are not what most people will be paying and my understanding is Cuba has gotten their price points especially with Cohiba more inline with what people are paying online...the CPE is double the price if you look at a 25 cab of Sig VI vs 25 CPE

Siglo VI's are $15CUC/each. CPE is $21CUC each.
Diamondog Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 According to this site. Siglo VI's are $15CUC/each. CPE is $21CUC each. So a $150 difference IF you are paying CUC which most people are not OR double the price which most people ARE paying...
Strada Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Prices just went up boys.Sig VI is 19.60 cuc now... Shlo is right, I haven't updated the price list on my blog yet. Well do soon.
