Ridiculous Rich Person Phone Brand Vertu Somehow Continues To Exist

pihlrsmp8ejfx6k92ltf.jpg

Vertu, a company best known for making $US10,000 ($13,191) Android phones (running software from 2014) and $US190 ($251) USB cables, is somehow still in business. And even more astoundingly, someone is still interested in what it has to offer.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the company that makes wildly overpriced phones for rich people was recently sold to Baferton Ltd., an investment firm owned Hakan Uzan, the son of what was once one of Turkey's wealthiest and most powerful families, for $US61 million ($80 million). As the Verge notes, Baferton is Vertu's third owner since Nokia spun the company off back in 2012. Vertu's value has fallen since then — it was sold for $US250 million ($330 million) to a Swedish investment firm in 2012 and then offloaded to a Chinese investor, Godin Holding, in late 2015.

It doesn't look like Godin Holdings ever did anything with Vertu, however — the Telegraph notes that it never filed its required financial data with the UK government, making it difficult to ascertain how many much money it made, how much money it lost, or its tax rate. Moreover, according to Vertu's website, the company hasn't released a new phone since 2015. The phones, which were midrange at best back in 2015, are absolutely antiquated now. But man, that hand-assembled craftsmanship for overpriced leather materials has to be worth something right? Right?

Nope. Don't get me wrong — I understand that there are people stupid enough to spend $65,000 on a smartphone just because they can. I just question whether there are enough people to make this sort of business viable. Sixty five thousand dollars for a smartphone is bad enough. Why go and spend million of dollars to acquire something so absurd?

Vertu has been around since 1998, when it was then a division of Nokia. That means it has been selling overpriced trinkets to idiots for almost 20 years. I can sort of understand how Vertu was able to carve out a niche back in those pre-smartphone days; after all, phones didn't have to evolve much. A Symbian-based phone made with some super premium materials could potentially appeal to a super-rich oligarch, because the phone itself worked the same as any other dumbphone. But in 2017, I can't imagine even the very wealthy splurging on a phone that would struggle to even open up Instagram or Facebook.

Basic accounting shows that these instincts are probably correct. Back in 2014 — the last time Vertu filed its taxes — the company reportedly lost $US64 million ($84 million) on sales of $US134 million ($177 million). Granted, I'm still shocked at that revenue figure, but those losses prove that even with these high prices, the markup isn't what it should be.

It's not exactly clear what Baferton thinks it will get from Vertu, either. In a statement, a spokesman for Hakan Uzan said, "Vertu is a powerful brand with an acknowledged market niche." Gordan Watson, Vertu's CEO, had an equally meaningless take. "Baferton shares our vision: 1.5 billion smartphones are sold each year and there is demand for a high-quality, exclusive product with associated services," he told the Telegraph.

In an interesting twist of fate, Vertu's new owner has some bad blood with its original owner, Nokia. Back in 2001, Nokia accused Uzan's family business, the Uzan Group, of fraud, after it failed to make good on payments it promised the Finnish phone maker. (The Uzan Group's fall from grace is its own interesting side-story. After failing to make good on $US6 billion [$7.9 billion] in debts — owed to everyone from Nokia, to Motorola, to Donald Trump — Turkey seized 219 companies belonging to the family in 2004. Hopefully things work out better for Vertu's old owners.)

Frankly, this seems like a a bad business decision made by a guy from a family with a bad history of business decisions. If I'm trying to make a good business investment (especially in the shadow of my family's exile and massive corruption scandal), buying a brand with depreciating assets and a genuinely terrible product makes no sense. I get that Vertu has a 350 square metre store on Madison Avenue, but that doesn't mean it has any customers worth whatever that real estate must cost. Even BlackBerry eventually realised that overpriced luxury phones are a dying market. Even the stupidest of rich people today realise it makes a lot more sense to buy a $US5500 ($7255) Louis Vuitton iPhone 7 Plus case than it does to buy a slow, ugly smartphone.

Canada Is Finally Getting Its First Spaceport

plls7thkmmmlli13kqib.jpg

Halifax-based Maritime Launch Services has confirmed its plans to build a $CA148 million ($145 million) rocket spaceport near Canso, Nova Scotia. Scheduled for completion in 2020, it will be Canada's first and only site where rockets can be launched into orbit.

In a joint venture with several US firms, Maritime Launch Services (MLS) is building Canada's first spaceport. At a total cost of $CA304 million ($297 million) — a figure that includes the cost of the first rocket launch and promotional expenses — the launch pad is slated to deliver commercial satellites to low Earth orbit aboard Ukrainian-built rockets on a due south trajectory, and at a cost of $CA60 million ($58 million) per launch. The company would like to launch as many as eight rockets per year starting in 2022.

rmr8dz6ax9vrb5icr7ym.png

The facility will include a launch pad, a processing building, and a control centre positioned about 3km away. MLS will be purchasing 3350kg Cyclone 4 rockets from the Ukrainian manufacturer Yuzhnoye and Yuzhmash. This company has been building rockets for over six decades, and has produced more than 400 spacecraft. Cyclone launchers have been in development since 1968, and are considered extremely reliable. By choosing such a well-established provider and rocket, the company feels it's "mitigating its risks".

Canso was selected by a team of American aerospace experts from 14 different candidate sites. It was chosen for its ideal access to a synchronous orbit, the area's low population density, its proximity to transportation hubs, and because of the province's enthusiasm from the project. MLS says it won't need any financial assistance from the government.

trlapldme39kuu0ykzfj.jpg

A poorly rendered illustration of the Cyclone 4 rocket. Let's hope this launch vehicle performs better than the company's graphic designers.

Employment in Nova Scotia has taken a hit recently, with downturns in the forestry and fisheries sector. The province's Natural Resources Minister said the project "will provide good paying jobs for people in these rural areas and to halt the out-migration that has victimized the province for some decades". Construction of the facility will require at least 150 workers. Once complete, 30 to 50 employees will be needed to maintain operations.

The new spaceport is a big deal for Ukraine, as well. The country, mired in an economic crisis, has been searching for a foreign partner for its Cyclone 4 launch vehicles over the past several months.

In addition to bringing in jobs, the spaceport is expected to draw tourists. Rocket launches will be visible for a good distance along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia.

The New American Gods Trailer Is So Weird And So, So Good

Every single bit of footage that Starz releases for American Gods makes us even more feverishly excited for the show. The latest trailer is jam-packed with gods who look deceptively normal but are, as the trailer notes, soon to entangle protagonist Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) in "some really weird shit". That seems to be an understatement.

It's actually hard to name every single god we get to see here, but it looks like at least Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), Czernobog (Peter Stormare), Zorya Vechernyaya (Cloris Leachman), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), Vulcan (Corbin Bernsen), Easter (Kristin Chenoweth) and Mr Nancy (Orlando Jones) are all getting time. And, of course, Technical Boy (Bruce Langley) stands out from the pack, in terms of new gods.

Also, a lot of blood floods the screen. So much blood.

American Gods premieres in the US on April 30. An Australian broadcaster has not yet been announced, which is no surprise...

Peer Into The Guts Of A Monster Tornado With This Incredible Simulation

Using a powerful supercomputer, meteorologists have simulated the "El Reno" tornado — a category 5 storm that swept through Oklahoma on 24 May 2011.

A research team led by Leigh Orf from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) has used a high-efficiency supercomputer to visualise the inner workings of tornadoes and the powerful supercells that produce them. As part of the project, the researchers recreated a tornado-producing supercell that devastated the Great Plains six years ago. Their new models are providing fresh insights into these monstrous storms and how they form.

During a four-day stretch in late May 2011, several tornadoes touched down over the Oklahoma landscape. One of these storms, dubbed "El Reno", registered as an EF-5 — the strongest category on the Enhanced Fujita scale. This beast of a tornado touched down near Hinton, Oklahoma, where it proceeded to blaze a trail of destruction for nearly two hours. By the time it was over, the storm caused extensive damage along a 101km-long path, killing nine people and injuring 161 others.

To simulate the incredibly complex set of meteorological factors required to produce this particular tornado, Orf's team was given access to the Blue Waters Supercomputer, located at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Orf's team used real-world observational data to recreate the conditions at the time of the storm, including a vertical profile of temperature, air pressure, wind speed and moisture. Together, these ingredients contribute to "tornadogenesis" — the conditions required for a supercell to spawn a tornado.

Unlike a conventional computer program, where code is written to churn out predictable results, the researchers sought to create a "true" representation by feeding archived weather data into software that simulates weather. This provided a degree of variability that's reflective of how weather works in nature; no two storms are exactly alike. In total, it took the machine more than three days to compile the tornado — a task that would have taken decades for a conventional desktop computer.

kahinnv6r3v3vzdgw4ak.gif

Once the main tunnel forms, several "mini" tornadoes form alongside it. They eventually merge, making the tornado even stronger.

Looking at the simulation, the researchers observed numerous "mini tornadoes" that formed at the onset of the main tornado. As the main funnel cloud took shape, the smaller tornadoes began to merge, adding strength to the superstructure and boosting wind speeds.

eowkb2mkgsvpxqlvjjm5.png

The simulation revealed several structures that make up a fully-formed tornado, including the streamwise vorticity current (SVC), thought to be a main driver of the tornadic activity (seen in yellow).

Eventually, a new structure known as the streamwise vorticity current (SVC) formed within the tornado. "The SVC is made up of rain-cooled air that is sucked into the updraft that drives the whole system," said Orf in a statement. "It's believed that this is a crucial part in maintaining the unusually strong storm, but interestingly, the SVC never makes contact with the tornado. Rather, it flows up and around it."

From here, Orf would like to share his team's data with scientists and meteorologists across the United States. "We've completed the EF-5 simulation, but we don't plan to stop there," says Orf. "We are going to keep refining the model and continue to analyse the results to better understand these dangerous and powerful systems."

Feel Really, Really Bad for These Mostly Stupid Commuters Standing Next to a Speeding Train

Commuting sucks in the winter as is. But commuting really sucks when you're waiting for the first train after a blizzard. And one YouTuber, Nick Colvin, got the whole thing on camera.

The video shows Amtrak commuter train hurtling through the station at a bizarrely fast speed for post-snowstorm conditions. Perhaps shock is exactly why most of the commuters waiting for their train didn't get out of the way and got absolutely blasted by a wave of snow. Winter is fun!

MIKA: From my point of view, there's a few people holding mobiles as though they are filming/expecting this to occur...?

WORLD’S RAREST JAPANESE WHISKY COLLECTION HEADS TO AUCTION

IMG_9770_5.jpg?itok=lj2qpKQ5

Picture this once in a lifetime anomaly. One of Japan’s oldest and most respected whisky makers known as Karuizawa opens its Miyota distillery in 1955.

Foolishly, they did so right next to an active volcano called Mount Asama. With the chance of turning into ash becoming a real possibility over the decades, Karuizawa ceased its operations in 2001, leaving behind their liquid gold.

What was slowly retrieved from the distillery over time would become one of the world’s most legendary whiskies, crafted from four small stills using imported Golden Promise barley from Scotland which was aged in Sherry casks.

Today those final existing bottles in the world are considered true collectors’ items. And the largest batch of them ever is about to go on auction – all 290 bottles of Japan’s most sought after whisky all in the one place – for a pretty penny.

IMG_9648_6.jpg?itok=7JaDxFBi

The Scottish-based Whisky Auctioneer will be overseeing the sale of one of the most impressive collections of Karuizawa to date which took approximately 10 years to amass.

Included in the sale is 230 bottles of single cask whisky which accounts for a bottle of 1963 50 Year Old, 1964 48 Year Old and the elusive Karuizawa 1960 ‘The Dragon’ – one of only 41 bottles in the world.

For reference, the last bottle of Karuizawa 1960 last sold in Hong Kong for £83,000 (over US$100,000).

Keen to sell your soul for a drop of majestic Japanese copper juice? Bidding will commence on April 5th at the Whisky Auctioneer with the entire collection expected to fetch in well over US$600,000.

The latest offering from the Avante-garde watchmaker packs in even more features than its predecessor with a host of options including up to eleven standard models and fifty-six different versions with forty-five more on request.

The finish on the latest Connected Modular 45 watch has also been upgraded with choices of either a satin or polished grade 5 titanium, 18K 5N rose gold or black ceramic all with the option with or without diamonds.

This makes the piece a serious step-up from the other offerings currently on the market – and that’s not even the most appealing part. The hardware itself in the Connected Modular 45 sees an upgrade with full access to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC and an internal storage of 4GB to bring it on par with the offerings of its biggest competitor. In laymen terms that means contactless payments and a whole spectrum of fitness tracking without the need to have your smartphone on you.

Practicality-wise the Modular 45 affords approximately 30 hours of runtime and a very impressive 50 metres water resistance for those who wish to take it for a swim.

On the specs list is the Android Wear 2.0 operating system paired with a bright 1.39-inch AMOLED 400×400-pixel resolution display to allow users to view anything from emails to apps in all its glory.

ASTON MARTIN AMR DIVISION

Aston-Martin-AMR-Division-00.jpg

There are a few car manufacturers out there who have smaller specialty-focused subgroups within them. Mercedes-Benz has AMG, BMW has M, and Bentley has Mulliner. For a long time, Aston Martin was one of the brands that wasn’t counted amongst them. But now they’ve announced their own in-house performance division, AMR, through the release of two supremely cool souped-up versions of their cars.

Dubbed the Rapide AMR and Vantage AMR Pro, these cars represent the next step forward in Aston Martin’s development as a vehicle engineering brand. The former boasts an over-591 horsepower 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine with a brand-new quad exaust system, making it capable of reaching speeds up to 210 mph. The latter is equipped with an insane GT4 race engine that makes it the most powerful V8 Vantage ever built. Both are done up in AMR’s signature Stirling Green with vibrant lime green accents, carbon fiber, and Dark Knight Alcantara upholstery. Only 210 examples of the Rapide are to be built, while the Vantage is to be limited to just 7. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

BLK WATER

Blk Water

There's spring water, mineral water, tap water, and now there's Blk Water. Although it looks like something you'd drain out of the above Aston Martins oil pan, this shadowy H20 is actually a mix of fulvic acid and pure Canadian spring water. The plant-based compound is mined from an 80 million-year-old source and allows for the rapid absorption of over 77 different minerals, electrolytes, and antioxidants, while also naturally giving the water its charcoal-hue. Free of sugar, caffeine, calories, and carbs and comes in a pack of 24, 8-ounce bottles. Oh and it's ONLY $43

The Latest Trailer For Transformers: The Last Knight Introduces A Badarse New Character

Izabella, the Transformers: The Last Knight newcomer, knows she fights like a girl and she's cool with it. Because it makes her awesome.

The new trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight gives us a front-and-centre look at Izabella, played by Nickelodeon star Isabela Moner. She might be a (15-year-old) kid, but she wants to fight and doesn't give star Mark Wahlberg any choice in the matter. Izabella looks to be part of a gang of kids who've been orphaned after the Robocalypse, definitely leaning into the "Kids, They're Just Like You!" part of the franchise. Gotta sell those Transformers toys hey @Fuzz;)

yy17p3hd0abugoy6pobw.png

The fierce survivor is a refreshing change of pace for the long-running Michael Bay series, which has often reduced its female characters to glorified blow-up dolls. Of course, there's always the chance she'll succumb to the "Badarse in Distress" trope, where she's strong and capable until that point where she eventually needs to be rescued by a man, but hopefully it doesn't come to that. Fighting like a girl is a good thing, after all.

Transformers: The Last Knight comes out June 22.

Sony Just Randomly Announced A Venom Movie Will Be Out Next Year

Image result for venom

This is straight-up crazy. Pretty much out of the blue, Sony has announced it will release a Venom movie on 5 October 2018 in the US, directed by Alex Kurtzman.

The news, first reported by ERC Box Office, is very surprising, considering no one has heard a peep about a Venom movie for a long time.

What we do know is Sony has been trying to do a Venom film for years. The character was more or less forced into Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and afterwards several people worked on different versions of his story, including Kurtzman, who then went on to make The Mummy. Last year, news broke that writer Dante Harper was working on a script that would reintroduce the character as the star of his own franchise, unrelated to the new Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland. But that was the last we heard of it.

With this announcement coming only from Sony and not Marvel, it seems likely a standalone take on the character is still the plan. However, with a character whose history is so closely tied to Spider-Man, and a new Spider-Man movie coming out, you have to wonder what exactly is the approach — and who, exactly, will be involved.

For some clues, we turn to the comics where Venom has been a standalone character for a while. In recent storylines the symbiote has been bonded to Flash Thompson, providing a more heroic take on the character on Earth and within the Marvel cosmos as Agent Venom. Then, in his latest ongoing series, he's reverted back to villainy with a new criminal host. So the idea of introducing a Venom on his own isn't completely crazy. However, most moviegoers are sure to wonder what the story will be without Peter Parker and the iconic storyline about the black symbiote suit.

Anyway, it's incredibly odd for this film to pop onto the release schedule so suddenly. We contacted Sony for comment or clarification but had not received a response at time of writing.

MIKA: Why Venom, its been and done (Poorly). I'd much prefer Carnage who has never been in a live action movie.

Cant have Carnage without Venom.

If they go with Eddy Brock I reckon the Cletus Cassidy origin will be what they put in the post credits scene to set up the sequel

This Massive 706-Carat Diamond Was Just Discovered in Sierra Leone

landscape-1489712349-gettyimages-173930424.jpg

Within the mines of eastern Sierra Leone, a pastor found quite a treasure: a diamond that could be one of the largest ever discovered.

According to The Guardian, the government said that Emmanuel Momoh found the gem in an artisanal mine in the village of Koyadu within the diamond-rich Kono region. It weighs in at 706 carats. The stone was presented on Thursday and will be sold in a government-held transparent auction in the Sierra Leone to benefit the community.

"I have to help the government and my people, so all of us can benefit," presidential spokesman Abdulai Bayraytay quoted Momoh as saying.

Check out this whopper:

C7EDEulV4AAgtGz.jpg

The diamond still needs to be analyzed by experts, but it's probable that it's among the largest, behind the 3,106-carat Cullian diamond and a 1,111-carat diamond discovered in 2015. Diamond expert Paul Zimnisky told the AFP news agency that it could possibly rank "between the 10th and 15th largest dem-diamonds ever recovered."

"Most recent exceptional diamond discoveries have been made by large commercial miners that mine very large volumes of kimberlite ore and process it with advanced equipment," Zimnisky said.

We've Gone Too Far, Burn It All Down, Start Again (This is not a Friday funny even though it is stupid funny)

Hushme, "the world's first voice mask for mobile phones" is described by its creators as a "personal acoustic device that protects speech privacy in open space environments" and by any other reasonable human as "why on Earth do you have that on your face what is wrong with you?".

Hushme's voice masking mode lets you choose from custom sounds like "Wind", "Ocean", "Minion" and "R2D2".

No, you don't need to check your calendar. It's not April 1st.

But there's really only one question that needs to be answered here (well, a few): who would wear this on their face? In public? And why? What phone call could possibly be so private that you need to wear this thing around you neck like a sci-fi exploding shock collar just in case someone hears you talking top your Mum? What are you, a secret agent or something?

It just makes no sense.

No. It's time to stop. We've gone too far and added to that, the narrator of that video sounds like James Cagney :D
