Ridley Scott Already Has A Script Ready To Go For The Alien: Covenant Sequel

qgm0aqck2f68juzbxzrg.jpg

The much-anticipated latest Alien series prequel, Alien: Covenant, isn't out for another two months, but veteran director Ridley Scott is already planning his next entry in the franchise. In fact, he already has a script in hand and is hoping to begin filming as early as next year.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Scott said:

Quote

While working on Alien: Covenant, he had the next instalment written so he is ready to keep advancing the saga.

"You've got to assume to a certain extent success and from that you'd better be ready," he says. "You don't want a two-year gap. So I'll be ready to go again next year."

As Scott fans already well know, he also has a few other big projects in the works this year, including serving as executive producer on Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, which is due in October. But Scott — who also added in the interview that he had three sequels total planned for 2012's Prometheus, which will all serve as "the back entrance" to Alien — is particularly focused on this saga, which he's been a part of since 1979. Plus, he notes, there are questions from the series that are still begging for answers:

Quote

"Alien was special without question; it was unique really. Prometheus was a good starting block to kick off the idea that no one ever asked in the sequels."

That question is who made the chest-bursting alien and for what purpose?

"Prometheus was about who and why? [Covenant] is getting closer to who designed it and for what reason."

Of course, if there's another film (or two?) already in the works, that means we probably won't be getting all those answers when Alien: Covenant arrives May 18.

Surgeons Remove 915 Coins From The Belly Of A Sea Turtle

mx1govk5znpki3nkyoj7.jpg

In Thailand, it's believed that throwing coins onto a turtle will bring longevity and good fortune. For many years, a female green sea turtle in the eastern town of Sri Racha had to endure this superstition while wading in a public pool. She consumed 915 coins in the process.

Yesterday, veterinarians in Bangkok operated on the 25-year-old turtle, removing each coin one by one. The 25-year-old green sea turtle, appropriately named "Bank", had been gobbling up the coins as tourists tossed them at her while she swam in her wading pool. These coins eventually formed a heavy ball in her stomach weighing 5kg. Then, that loose change caused a crack to form in her ventral shell, which got badly infected. ucf5mfkfqbsevdzgkzzz.jpg

Sick and nearing death, the navy was called in to deliver the turtle to veterinarians.

zjw5t5udijrykcqwzqof.jpg

3D scans revealed the horde of coins, including a pair of fish hooks. A team of five surgeons from Chulalongkorn University's veterinary faculty removed the coins while Bank was under general anaesthesia. During the course of the four-hour operation, the surgeons took out each coin one by one through a 10cm incision. Many of them were corroded or partially dissolved. Around 15,000 baht ($564) in donations was raised from the public to pay for the surgery.

"The result is satisfactory," said surgeon Pasakorn Briksawan in an AP article. "Now it's up to Bank how much she can recover."

The turtle will be placed on a liquid diet — of a different kind — for the next two weeks. Assuming Bank gets better and she's allowed to return to her stomping grounds at her pond in Sri Racha, it's not clear if tourists will still be allowed to toss coins at her. Which, given her penchant for loose change, should probably be put to a halt.

BENTLEY BENTAYGA MULLINER EDITION

Bentley-Bentayga-Mulliner-Edition-SUV-00.jpg

If you’re not already familiar with it, Bentley’s Bentayga is an absolutely absurd luxury vehicle. For reference, the brand had labeled it the “most luxurious and fastest SUV in the world.” And what does one do once they’ve achieved that? Well, in Bentley’s case, you hand it over to your in-house personalization division – Mulliner – and you have them make it even more luxurious.

Unsurprisingly, Mulliner has achieved their goal with their unique brand of unparalleled flair. How? Well, they added a backseat-mounted Mulliner Bottle Cooler, new 22″ wheels, a redesigned bespoke interior (both a new veneer concept and contrast embroidery on the upholstery), and gave the whole exterior a new paint job – to name a few things. And, under the hood, it’s still got that monstrous 6-liter V12 that pumps out 600 horsepower and 663 foot-pounds of torque. As is the case with all the things Mulliner has a hand in, this edition will be extremely limited. It will become available to order sometime this Spring.

Netflix Is Making a Medieval Korean Zombie Show

mkvplf74b3jsnmybbh4k.png

Zombie shows are still hot. So is Korean cinema. So is a mix of both, if last year’s Train to Busan is anything to go by. But now Netflix is getting in on a show that is all this and more, as it’s actually a medieval-era fantasy series, too.

Netflix has announced that it has joined Kim Seong-hun’s new thriller TV series Kingdom, with plans to bring to its streaming service worldwide in 2018 in partnership with Korean production company Astory. The eight-part series is set during Korea’s Joseon dynasty, an era that covered the 14th to late 19th century, and had a huge impact on Korean culture as it is known today. It follows a young crown prince sent on a suicidal investigation into a bizarre medical outbreak. Turns out said outbreak is a zombie apocalypse, and the prince’s forces have to hold back a threat that could destroy Korea and the wider world itself.

The premise is certainly intriguing—a sort of blend of Games of Thrones-ian historical fantasy with good old Walking Dead zombie horror, through the lens of Korean filmmaking. Between this and Bong Joon-Ho’s upcoming movie Okja, it seems like Netflix is making a big push for Korean genre projects and getting them out there for a much bigger audience to see. If it means we get more cool supernatural fantasy stuff to watch, we’ll be more than happy to see what comes of it.

Scientists Have Created The First Artificial Embryo Without Using An Egg Or Sperm

txfbczuprdnadnm5qjzg.jpg

Using stem cells in grown-on 3D scaffolding in a laboratory petri dish, scientists have for the first time created an embryo made entirely from stem cells.

The artificial mouse embryo, detailed this month in the journal Science, is a major step toward creating synthetic embryos that closely resemble natural ones. It could shed light on early development and help improve fertility treatment procedures.

Cambridge biologist Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, whose work focuses on the development of cell lineages, has long sought the development of an artificial embryo. But without using an egg in some way, scientists have had difficulty getting cells to communicate with each other early in development. Scientists managed to clone Dolly the sheep, for example, without requiring a ram's sperm, but they still required an egg cell to fuse the cloned adult DNA with.

The Cambridge team got around this issue by taking embryonic stem cells (cells found in embryos that can mature into any type of body tissue) and growing them alongside trophoblast stem cells (the cells that produce the placenta). After growing the two types of cells separately, they combined them in a gel matrix. The two types of cells began to mix and develop together. After four days, the embryos began to resemble normal mouse embryos.

The goal is not necessarily to create a real mouse from these cells — and the science is still a ways from that anyway. Additional types of cells will likely needed to be added to the mix in order for the embryos to actually start developing organs. Even then, the cells may not develop past the very early stages shown in the Science paper.

But being able to study the way the cells develop in the very early days of an embryo's life could shed important light into early development. The Cambridge researchers, for example, engineered different cell types to glow different colours so that they might track how they behave as the embryo develops. The work provided insight into how those two types of cells work together to form the blue print for the mouse body.

Here's a video of Zernicka-Goetz explaining the work:

This Is Our First Footage Of One Of The Most Elusive Whales On Earth

Sightings of True's beaked whales are so rare that even the most devoted whale expert can go an entire career without ever seeing one in the wild. Researchers working near the Azores are now the first to ever capture underwater footage of these aquatic creatures in their natural habitat.

The new footage, captured by a research team from the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling at the University of St Andrew's in Scotland, shows two adult True beaked whales swimming with a calf near the Azores Islands in the North Atlantic.

In an accompanying paper published in PeerJ, the researchers offer new insights into this poorly-studied aquatic mammal. In addition to unprecedented footage, the researchers recorded a new colour pattern for these deep water whales, while also establishing geographical boundaries in the North Atlantic. These insights will allow marine biologists to better monitor the status of individuals and work to conserve the species.

As testament to their elusive nature, three new species of beaked whales have been discovered in the past two decades alone, bringing the total number of known beaked whale species to 22. Sightings are rare, and much of what's known about these creatures is derived from observations of decomposing bodies found on shore and breaching events.

Beaked whale behaviour explains why we so rarely see these creatures. They tend to live far offshore in deep waters, spending 92 per cent of their time underwater. Among whales, they are the masters of the deep, feeding at depths reaching 3000m and staying underwater for as long as two hours. These whales use their specialised beaks to suck up squid, fish and crustaceans. Following a big dive, they return to the surface and perform short, shallow dives at brief intervals. Unlike some whales and dolphins, they aren't attracted to boats.

For the new study, a research team led by marine biologist Natacha Aguilar de Soto performed a genetic analysis on two whales that were found a few years ago: One that washed ashore in El Hierro, Canary Islands in 2012, and one found floating dead near Faial, the Azores, in 2004. The purpose of the molecular analysis was to confirm the identity of the specimens as True's beaked whales; even beaked whale experts have a hard time distinguishing one species from another.

ci56nyn1mimyru931saw.jpg

True's beaked whales have been known to breach the surface of the ocean, allowing for observations.

In conjunction, several observations of True's beaked whales (in addition to the new footage) in deep waters off the Azores and the Canary islands suggests these archipelagos may be prime locations for studying the enigmatic whales. Using data from previous research, the scientists were able to compile a map showing their likely geographic boundaries.

lbwrzbwhioalqseboy3y.png

(A) Worldwide distribution of True's beaked whales and (B,C) the locations of the reports included in the new paper. (Image: N.A. de Soto et al., 2017)

Looking at the footage, the researchers were also able discern new colour patterns on True's beaked whale. The whale features a discernible white splotch that extends from the top "melon" portion of its head back to its blowhole above its eyes. "This coloration contrasts with previous descriptions for the species and it may be rare," write the researchers in their study, "but it exemplifies the variability of the colouration of True's beaked whales in the North Atlantic, further confirmed here by live sightings data." These new colour patterns should make it easier for marine biologists to identify these whales during future expeditions.

f5ntawimxkqe7vjgzof9.png

It's hard to believe that scientists are just now capturing the first footage of large mammalian species. But as this study shows, our oceans still have many secrets to tell.

Patrick Stewart Willing To Come Out Of Recent Post-Logan X-Men Retirement For Second Time In Fox’s Legion

It seems like it was just last week that we were saying it seems like it was just last week that Sir Patrick Stewart announced his retirement from playing Charles Xavier. Perhaps that’s because it actually was just last week that we were saying that, after we learned that Stewart would be willing to come out of that retirement to play Xavier again in a Deadpool movie. In any case, for the second time in as many weeks, the legendary actor has revealed that he would consider breaking his vow to stop playing Professor X after his performance in Logan, this time for a potential role in Legion, the Fox TV show.

Stewart revealed his inability to refrain from playing Xavier on The Late Late Show with James Corden, while appearing alongside star Dan Stevens, who plays the lead in the show, who happens to be Xavier’s son, David Haller. When Stevens brings up the possibility and explains the relationship between Xavier and Haller, Stewart is excited. When Stevens says he has a job offer and Corden asks if he’s “in,” Stewart replies: 100%.

Well, that didn’t last long. Again. Though we’d be lying if we said we didn’t want this to happen.

The Most Evil Poachers Ever Broke Into a French Zoo to Kill a Rhino and Steal His Horn

  landscape-1488933150-gettyimages-537669305.jpg

On Monday night, criminals broke into a French zoo and killed one of the establishment's three white rhinoceroses to steal his horn.

The animal, a four-year-old southern white rhinoceros named Vince, was shot three times in the Thoiry Zoological Park before his horn was sawn off with what was likely a chainsaw. His keeper found the rhino dead the next morning.

"It is extremely shocking what just happened, zoo director Thierry Duguet told French newspaper 20 Minutes. "An act of such violence never before seen in Europe."

The zoo added in a statement that his second horn was only partially damaged, which could have been because the "criminals [were] disturbed our that their equipment turned out to be defective."

Rhino horn is banned from trade by a U.N. convention and from sale in France. Its demand is high in Asian countries where it's used in traditional medicines, according to Reuters. Just last year, a kilo of rhino horn fetched over $50,000 on the black market in 2015, the zoo said in the statement.

Southern white rhinoceroses are considered to be near-threatened. Though African authories have been battling poaching for years, it's believed to be the first time a rhino was killed in a European zoo.

QUADRUM MINIMALIST SKI RESORT

Quadrum-Minimalist-Ski-Resort-00.jpg

Usually, when people envision idyllic snow-laden ski resorts, their minds drift to places like Aspen, Colorado or perhaps even the Swiss Alps. And while the Quadrum Ski Resort certainly wouldn’t look out of its element in either place, it’s actually located in a much more unique locale. That’s right, this minimalist winter retreat can be found 2,000 meters above sea level in the Caucasus mountains of Georgia.

Inspired by the very mountains that surround it, this pyramid-shaped resort is built from a series of repurposed shipping containers. And, to decrease the environmental impact of the hotel, it was put together up on a series of stilts. Then, sticking with that environmentally-friendly theme, much of the other build materials were actually sourced locally. The result is a striking minimalist architectural feat that is as beautiful as it is cozy. As far as amenities are concerned, the Gudauri getaway offers everything from single rooms to double suites, a yoga and fitness center, a ski depot and a 5 minute walk to the nearest lift, free Wi-Fi, and more. For rates and booking, just contact the resort.

Own Elvis Presley’s .357 Revolver

Own Elvis Presley's .357 Revolver

From birth record documents and signed Amex cards to Tissot watches and a custom Karate gi, we’ve seen a lot of interesting Elvis memorabilia come up for sale over the years. But nothing like The King’s gold and silver Smith & Wesson .357 Revolver that you have a chance to own. Up for sale through reputable California autograph and memorabilia dealer Moments in Time, this Smith & Wesson Model 19 revolver has a bear, bobcat, moose, mountain lion and puma inlaid in gold; deer and antelope carvings in the ivory handles; and a story that’s even more impressive than all that inlay work. Elvis bought the gun in the late 70s in Beverly Hills from Kerr’s Sporting Goods with a custom leather zip case before gifting it to Vice President Spiro Agnew later that year. The gun wound up back in Elvis’s hands because Agnew was under investigation. Ultimately, it ended up in the hands of Shelby County Sheriff Gene Barksdale (where Elvis was a Special Deputy). When the gun was last listed approximately five years ago it was estimated at $275,000, so expect this beaut to command a few more dollars this time around.

The second entry in its core Super Series lineup, the McLaren 720S makes many strides over the 650S, yet retains the company's signature aerodynamic look. Its twin-turbocharged, 4.0L V8 produces 710 hp and is mounted in the middle of its carbon fiber chassis. Paired to a seven-speed SSG transmission, it propels the car from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 212 mph. That speed is harnessed from inside a refined interior, outfitted with premium leather, aluminum switches, and enough creature comforts to make this as fun to drive on the road as it is on the track.

When Supervillain Make-Up Gets in the Way of Actual Acting

Watching this gave me intense flashbacks to every scene in the 2002 Spider-Man movie where Willem Dafoe’s voice floated out from behind an expressionless Green Goblin mask. What a bad idea, right?

Whether it’s Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse or Idris Elba as Krall in Star Trek Beyond, it can sometimes seem really dumb to negate the expressiveness of a big-deal actor’s face under layers of prosthetics. A College Humor sketch makes fun of this phenomenon with a “cool space guy” that you can barely understand because so much effort has been made to make him seem otherworldly. Let’s hope future films learn from the true power of this mistake.

The Latest Trailer for The Void Is as Creepy as It Is Awesome!

In a small town beset by mysterious circumstances, a group of people gets stuck in a hospital—only to discover the hospital is the worst possible place for them to be. Welcome to The Void, a throwback film to those classic ‘80s horror movies that provided as much disgust as terror.

To be honest, I kind of wish the trailer had cut off about halfway through. The second half shows a lot of crazy shit—stuff that I didn’t know about beforehand when I saw it, and stuff I’m pretty sure I would have rather been surprised by. But hell, they have to get you interested, right?

The Void is directed by Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski. It hits theaters and VOD April 7.

Deadpool Will Star In X-Force, Plus More On The Future Of The X-Men Film Universe

i6fjjaakta3dbipsuk1g.jpg

Logan truly feels like the end of an era for the X-Men movies. Not just because Hugh Jackman is leaving the character behind, but because it comes at a time when the franchise itself feels up in the air. X-Men: Apocalypse disappointed, Deadpool wowed, and TV entry Legion is surprising. Who knows what's next?

Simon Kinberg does. He's the executive producer of Legion. He produced Logan, as well as Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse. And he's the rumoured frontrunner to direct the next X-Men movie. Recently, he spoke to Deadline and dropped some revealing updates on all things X-Men movies. We'll start with the non-spoiler stuff before getting into the Logan ramifications. Here's the overview:

Quote

We are working hard on New Mutants, Gambit with Channing Tatum, Deadpool 2 and the new X-Force movie where Deadpool is alongside Cable and other main characters.

That may be the first time we've heard definitively that Deadpool will be in the X-Force movie, though it was obviously the assumption. As for what that film will be, Kinberg continued:

Quote

X-Force is a combination of Deadpool, and Cable — they're like the Black ops of the X-Men. They're much darker and have an R-rated decibel. There are other X-Men characters coming into X-Force at different times in the comic, but it's separate from X-Men.

Of course, we recently heard Joe Carnahan is writing a script for X-Force and while he doesn't mention that, the way Kinberg talks about it, he seems to expect it to happen fairly quickly. Definitely before a third Deadpool movie at least. But, we guess, X-Force is kind of its own Deadpool sequel in a way.

Oddly, when asked the order of what's next movie-wise, Kinberg mentioned Deadpool 2 and X-Force but not New Mutants, which many assumed would be next to go into production after Deadpool 2. That may still be the case and maybe it just slipped his mind, but it's interesting to note.

Kinberg then explained that while there is a plan for the movies to connect, that is not their main goal.

Quote

There is a larger architecture to tell these stories in. I talk to the studio all the time about this and there is a plan for how these movies can connect and be a part of a larger narrative. It's something that's fun, exciting and it will be interesting to see how we marry the different tones that we've been generating in these standalone movies of the X-Men universe. But we go into making the best movie we can. It's not just about a Colossus or Deadpool cameo. Connecting all of these movies will happen when it organically makes sense. These movies aren't simply being built as stepping stones to a larger story. Each one is wholly enclosed and a movie worth seeing.

The writer-producer also doesn't deny the rumours that he could direct the next X-Men movie, whenever that would be, but he doesn't confirm them either.

OK, and now the Logan spoilers and how the ending of that film will resonate beyond.

cycmbhpwp3vybmo9r5tf.png

As you probably know, Logan ends not just with the death of Professor X, but Wolverine himself. Kinberg was asked about continuing that character and if Hugh Jackman would have a role in that. Here's his answer:

Quote

We haven't even thought of the next iteration of Wolverine. For all of us, we were keeping our fingers crossed that the audiences would respond to Logan the way they have. I can't visualise in my head another Wolverine but if that day ever comes, we would talk to Hugh about it.

There's no mention of how X-23 could potentially continue that mantle, or if they would just reboot the character. We'll have to see. But, for now, it seems like the focus — at least after Logan — is the X-Force and Deadpool universe.

The First Image From Jurassic World 2 Raises Some Dino-Sized Questions

wqmvavyq4m0ljawlfo8x.jpg

Jurassic World 2 has been filming for about a week now and director J.A. Bayona just released the first official image. In it, we see a young girl in a museum filled with dinosaur fossils. Where could this be? Who is this character? And where did these bones come from?

So let's break this down. We do not know who this girl is. Maybe Claire and Owen's kid? Maybe someone else? Also, the amount of detail and money on display in this room likely suggests it isn't part of a theme park. So who is this girl? Why is she there? And, most importantly, who collects all these dinosaur skeletons? Where did this person get the skeletons? Is it someone who got them from the original Jurassic Park? Or is this from Jurassic World?
