Ghabanos Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 mention of speakers in the cohibasteve's ashtray thread lead me ask this.... what is your guys' set up for home theater or music at home... I am looking to get a 5.1 set with a receiver and turntable, so would love to hear recommendations - brands, sizes, color, pics... give us all the details.
Strada Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I have krkv5 in my studio with Stanton turntable. In my cigar lounge I have a Technic 1200 and a pair of Klipsch. I love vinyl until I have to move and I always end up selling a chunk of my collection...but it's great lol
Cohiba Stevie Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 KRK make great speakers but I find them way too thick on the low end. Genelec are probably the best speakers ive ever heard but they are serious cash. Like I mentioned in my thread you really cant go wrong with yamaha audio gear, superbly made with very accurate sound, the speakers I use are an updated version of the famous NS10ms which are still an industry standard for mixing, the general rule is if it sounds good on the yamahas, it will sound good on anything. Yamaha also make some fantastic home cinema systems aswell. I would reccommend going with an active setup without the use of a subwoofer, if you get speakers that have woofers of a decent size and good low end depth and response you will fine. Unless you have a huge room placement of a subwoofer can prove difficult to get the most from it, i also think they creat an uneveness in sound if your room isnt big. I also reccomend a good mixing desk, they are so handy as you can hook nearly anything up to it and control the levels as you want. As far as turntables are concerned you should go with a technics 1210. The direct drive motor it is one of the most reliable ever made and they are built like tanks. An alternative would be a high end stanton model.
ohioldd Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I have had the Bose Lifestyle V35 home entertainment system for about 3 years. It is very discrete in size, but no turntable.
Ghabanos Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 very awesome, thanks for all that. I will definitely consider - especially Yamaha (so many have recommended this). this is my first round of getting into all this awesome gear, so I am very new at this. do you guys have an opinion on Pro-ject or Music Hall? where are the other audiophiles?
Sutton Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I kinda have old school gear. I am running nakamichi av-10 and a music bank 10 for CD player. As for speakers I went with crystal audio system series. Speakers are made in Greece. The fronts have 6 3" drivers and tweets, rears and center are 4 3" drivers and tweets. I love these speaker you can hear every detail . As for Subwoofer I have 2 that I swap back and forth. Running a JM lab 11" and a SVS Dual 12. The JM is very tight and the SVS I have tunned down to 30 hz. Some day I will upgrade to MK gear
mk05 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Mac pre amp and 275 amp drives Definitive BPs with matched sub, connected through a Marantz. Still considered the most detailed and expressed sound in the industry to date, and it's not a new setup. Supposedly. Blabla My room has an old Marantz A/B switch for B&W 603 books and a pair of Energy C5s, systems that I started with. Still love them. For music and movies.
mbrody Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I feel obliged to help out a BOTL...budget for the system?
Squarehead Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 My Receiver is a Pioneer and the speakers are Polkaudio. No Turntable. This has to do it on a pensioners income.
Cohiba Stevie Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 My Receiver is a Pioneer and the speakers are Polkaudio. No Turntable. This has to do it on a pensioners income. Awww man i love pioneer audio gear, i had two cdj800s and a djm400 mixer and loved them, sold them on as i moved from track mixing to music production. Pioneer make fantastic gear.
CanuckSARTech Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Harmon Kardon HD AVR dual-zone receiver, with JBL home theatre micro satellites. Wicked little set up. Can vibrate the pictures in my neighbors house, 20 feet away, out of little six-inch ceiling-mounted drop-down speakers with a powered 10-inch sub. Everything's wired into the AVR (HD antenna, satellite, DVD player, PS3 bluray, home computer, etc). Everything wired together with top level Monster Cable stuff (overpriced as it is), but it all just sounds phenomenal. Sent from my iPhone via Tapatalk.
Ghabanos Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 I feel obliged to help out a BOTL...budget for the system? Looking for bang for buck, but may consiser to max it 5k usd.
mk05 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Looking for bang for buck, but may consiser to max it 5k usd. Depends on what you want to do. Do you feel like you want to grow the system? Or are you just going to keep this system as is, then go buy another system down the road to replace? I thought I wanted to do the former, but instead I ended up doing the latter. If you want to grow your system, start with a decent receiver from NAD or Marantz. Speakers come and go. If you are just starting, a pair of the classic B&W 60x bookshelves will give you a great look, or a pair of floorstanding Energy's (like I did ). If you decide to go the HT route, Polk makes very convincing and economical solutions. Honestly, in this, quality is what you look for, THD, mapping RMS needed to drive, understanding your bottleneck, etc. Loud and boomy is not necessarily great. Once you have your good receiver, you can grow your system by replacing your speakers with nicer ones like Def Tech or B&W 80x; you buy a nice amp to match the power handling, then a preamp, a sub, etc. Or you can opt to just get an average overall complete system as start up, with the knowledge that you will just buy a completely new system down the road. I ended up doing this because I made mistakes trying to do the above. I thought I could mix a couple speaker brands in without first qualifying sound output. Stupid. They clashed.
Diamondog Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Have an Axiom setup myself, 5.1 2 M80's floors, VP150 cntr, QS8's for surround and an EP500 sub, outstanding setup, they play in a class well above their pricepoint and they weren't cheap, being driven by a Denon 4308ci Axiom
mbrody Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 5k is a good budget. If u are positive on 5.1, start with the front three speakers and sub being your top purchase. I would recommend focal chorus 826v towers and matching center. Then find a used JL audio f112 or f113. New will kill the budget. Any reasonable av receiver with 100 watts will do. You probably know what to stay away from. Entry level turntable is fine. Project or music hall. Vinyl is magical in itself. Add the rears whenever. They are less important. Av receivers will change every 6-9 months, so if you start to enjoy the hobby, mthen that is where you will change down the road. You can later bump up the rears too. Starting with an investment in solid towers, center and sub will give you the best investment and greatest enjoyment. You won't believe what that sub does to the system.... Good luck!
edlye Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 what is your guys' set up for home theater or music at home... Your location in HK and proximity to Japan exposes you to a gamut of HK-based audio enthusiasts who are online and may be willing to open their homes to audition and help you put a system together. Never buy anything without hearing it first or getting a home audition. I have two different systems for home entertainment and music. I use a Philips Soundbar system for my home entertainment. I built a nicer tube-based system for music (source: Vimak DT901 CD player + Rega Planar 3 turntable & Denon DL-110 cartridge & Lehmann Black Cube, passive pre-amp: Promitheus TVC, amp: Almarro A205A MkII modded and speaker: WLM Diva) that gives me an organic yet pacey presentation for vocals and jazz. I also recommend power supply conditioning products from Japan-based CSE if you are so inclined, I use their Isolation Balanceformer and the Isolation Regulator with good effect on my music system.
Loki Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Yamaha receiver 7.1 home theater set up at my place with a 55" lcd display, satelite dvr/tv , blue-ray player and I-pod dock. Great for music and video. I run Klipsch speakers. 4 book shelf size speakers , center channel speaker , 2 dipole surround sound speakers and 2 10" powered sub-woofers.
Hypersomniac Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I'd have to look at what the model numbers are, but right now in our basement we have a Denon receiver, Boston towers, Boston center channel, Paradigm in-ceiling and Paradigm subwoofer.
Rushman Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Here in Playa del Carmen my setup is simple.......an iPad. Back in the states I went with a pre packaged Bose system cuz A/V isn't a real hobby of mine and it sounded fine. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631714,-87.070612
Tan1801 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I got my system about 2 or 3 years ago. Receiver is an Onkyo SR507. Speakers are a Mission m3 5.1 system. I found this was the best bang for $ within my budget at the time. I remember spending months and months listening to speakers (half the fun, but also half the pain). As someone else mentioned, being in HK is advantageous. I know there are some Aussie enthusiasts who purchase gear from HK.
