Hey gang. So I was fortunate enough to get a 5er of Monte As from 2002. I'm smoking my 4th one now, and each one of these has been magical. Mild-bodied, but incredibly smooth and flavorful. Cereal, sweet tobacco, some mild baking spices, MAN these are good! Just wonderful cigars! ( I realize that these being 10-years-old makes a big difference.) Sadly, I have one left. Of course, I'll be looking for some good quality As to replace these.

I'm looking for a cigar (or three) that is similar to the Monte A in flavor profile, but preferably shorter since I very seldom have the time for an A-sized cigar. Are there other Montes with similar a flavor profile? Having never smoked a young Monte A, I can't compare them in terms of age.

Any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks gang!

You probably hit it with the age.

If you can find good ones, Monte #1 and #3 really are classy with 10 years on, vanilla, dried raisin and milk chocolate. Smooth and creamy and not a hint of harshness. I had the last one of my 2001 #3s this spring and miss them already, I have a couple of boxes waiting to hit that ten year mark (nearest one is 4 years away) so can't wait.

Maybe keep your eye out on the upcoming auctions for some ones with age already on them?

Never had the chance to have one...how long do these take you to smoke?

This one was over 3 hours. Never got boring, great flavors to the nub! It wasn't very dynamic, which is an issue for a cigar this big. But it was so good that I didn't really mind.

Just cut it in thirds.

Good idea but i think in two would be enough, and you get to invent the "très petit Churchill" :wink2:

I have a Cabinet OSU 2001 that are in the line of flavor you describe (it's just a magic moment), i haven't find a smoke that could be alike but i agree that a Monte #1 or #3, aged enough, could be a reminder of the A.

Or maybe a Monte B if you find one (i don't know if they share the same aromatic line, i unfortunately only tried one very long time ago and i didn't knew the A at this time).

 that is a bizarre advice…

As Mark (mk05) wrote in an other thread, "Some blends just only work in larger ring gauge". This is true as well for the lenght of the vitola.

I can't think of one cigar in the current Monte line that could be compared to a shorter Monte A.

Based on old memories I would maybe advice to try a Monte Robusto EL 2000 with a light wrapper; but I have no idea where to find it…

As i said upper i didn't find a smoke alike the A.

As i don't know the Monte B maybe they could share something.

I agree with the fact that it will not be the same regarding the lenght/cepo ratio but i smoked a Petit Corona made (and adapted) with the liga of the Siglo VI Reserva. It was in a blind test and definitly found something of the Siglo VI. I thought i was totally saying BS and appears i was right so, for sure you're not gonna find the same thing but a bit of it doesn't seem completely off to me.

haha i do that all the time

need to fire up this A already, it's taking up too much space in my desktop LOL

Enjoy! Just set aside enough time. The first time I smoked one I had to rush at the end, which was too bad because I wanted to savor every second (the final third is the best for me on this one).

As far as Montes go I am a huge fan of the Especiales and Especial No. 2. There is a sweet milk chocolate with macadamia brittle on it that I absolutely love. Worth trying a few singles to see if they fit the bill.

Oh I can do that now, sometimes we do a marathon herf for 6 hrs but we will have a bite to eat in between the first or second. One cigar lately has been knocking me out for some reason though.

I'm just trying to imagine what it would be like to sit outside for three hours :D

Damn right... I'm just finding out the purpose of a short robusto!! Even though I'm not totally convinced, CQ the LFC Short Robusto is one of the best I've had this year thanks to your recommendation , and I'm already ordering the second box after smoking just a couple!

Back to the thread. Never had a Monte A. i thought Rob and the crew were about to do a video review on them.

I wasn't even talking about smoking for three hours, just sitting outside for three hours seems to be something that I can't imagine after the last few years here! :D :D :D

Great to hear it! They are amazing now but I'm really intrigued to see what a few more years will do to them, I've no idea at all where those flavours will go in time, maybe more floral? I remember Rob saying after he had tried some in Ireland that he thought they would be going similar to a Des Dieux.

recently had a young Monte A single, started out very mild and finished off as strong as a Monte no.2, very similar flavour profile at the end as well except for an added touch of raisin(?) that i've never had, at least that prominently, in a no.2... nowhere near a perfect match but...

so not quite what you're after probably but backend-of-young-MonteA resembles Monte2. (the other one that comes to mind is an SLR serie A but probably only if it was half-blended with a Montecristo ... hmmm)

reminds me of the time i had some great RyJ Churchills and mistakenly thought the then-new short churchills would give a time-saving version... <_< good luck...
