joshua84 Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Just had a few drinks of "The Yamazaki" by Suntory, a japanese distillery. It's a 12 year old single malt and I must say that I am very impressed that it certainly a contender in my books with other Speyside whiskies. Very delicate honey and dried fruit notes. Perfect with any mild to medium cigars. Loved it with the PLPC and QDO Corona. Used to enjoy these with either the RZ 23 or the Glenlivet 12. After this hmmm... .decisions, decisions, decisions to make. Anyone tried this before?
nikesupremedunk Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 I've heard about these. How much do they go for on the average? Comparable to other Single malt 12 y/o's?
davidsan Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 I had a couple glasses neat and an old fashioned made with it and it's definitely my fav drink of the year so far. Enjoyed with an SLR DC
demiurgic Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Some single malt loving friends got together recently and we did a testing on high end scotchs We tried mostly 12-18's in the Yamazaki of course, Johnny Walker Blue and Macallan I mean they are all great, including the Laphroig, Balvenie and Glenlivet are all pretty good too ( Glenlivet being the best bang for the buck besides JW Black, but that is blended, so what right?) Unfortunately, the Yamazaki and JWB just did not leave an lasting impression. I mean they would have if it was the only thing we drank taht night, but I think their finishes were much shorter than the Macallan so we didnt get into them as much. The winner that night was Macallan. Hands down, mostly all of us preferred it's amazing flavors. However, it's because most of us like our scotch on the sweeter side with flavors that coat the palate and that lovely sherry flavor Macallan has, is to die for! However, another fine contender, full of smoky peaty goodness is the LaPhroig. Just a great dram and my second favorite after Macallan. I'd like to try Glen Morangie. Anyone one here tried it? We were smoking Cohiba Sig VI's that night and it was a lovely night!
Lotusguy Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 The 18 is a relevation!!! Love it but it seems to get more expensive every year
khomeinist Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 18 is excellent. I always have some on hand.
gersonmorelli Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 I enjoy the 12 but the 18 is amazing. Suntory also makes a really good blended but I've never seen it in the US. It's called Hibiki. I've had the 17 which was really smooth and brought from Tokyo a bottle of 21 that I haven't tried yet.
ZinZan Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 The 18 is sublime prob my all time favs. You guys should try the ***** from Yoichi to the Ichiro if you have the chance. ***** was the original founder of Japanese single malt. He was actually hired by Suntory to learn the scotch trade in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. They went their separate ways and he founded *****. I'm not sue why the ***** name was edited.

IMO doesn't hold a candle against the Yamazaki 18. Did you try the Hakushu 12Y Peated Malt yet? It was interesting.
Justmi Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Take a sip and think of the words "black cherry". To my palate, its the most striking note. For me, Japanese whiskeys are sublime but also very polite. Its one of those whiskeys I am impressed by yet when I reach for a bottle, my hand grabs something a bit more bolder or daring. Ralfy on Ralfy.com calls it provenance, the Scottish desire to take a risk and see what happens. The Japanese maybe are a little too restrained to do that. Its all personal taste, understand. Hibiki, Suntory's blend, is revered and worshipped by many. I will give that a try one day.
NJP Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 It is a perfect warmer weather single malt. It's shorter finish helps to not weigh down the palete. Thats my excuse for drinking straight spirits on a hot Aussie day and I'm sticking to it.
canadianbeaver Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 A very nice addition to my Scotch shelf. Matthew brought it home from some trip when the idea of a Japanese Single malt was so strange we could not believe it. It is very nice and as above, a Speyside or Highland style... No wonder, it is owned by Bowmore (although it is the oldest distillery in Japan I see).
Nino Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I've had the Yamazaki and it was as excellent as described - but what I most fondly remember is a N i k k a 17 yr old, also by Suntory, created by Taketsuru-San, former Suntory chief blender, and a Partagas 15 Anniv. at Bar K in Singapore's Robertson Quay a few years back ...
dan5974 Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I just picked up a bottle of this stuff and was thorughly impressed.I'm lokking for the Hakushu 12yo now.Seems pretty hard to find in my neck of the woods.
