Strada Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 A while back I had one of these and I was really surprised and it stuck to me. You know the feeling when you have a cigar that just stays on your mind. That was that moment. Fast forward to last week, I was out with our dear friend Riaz to smoke a few cigars on one of the terraces in Montreal. He pulled out one of these and it clicked in my head again "man, I need to smoke my last one ofthese" Here it is: Yesterday was a sunny and warm day; I had been inside doing some math studying, WHICH I don't recommend doing on a beautiful day by the way. I decided to light this bad boy up on my front balcony while changing the line on my fishing rod for next week's trip with my dad for his retirement. It had a maduro wrapper and some sort of hair bumps, like it had goosebumps lol A very easy draw and some crisp tobacco flavour at cold. 1st Right off the bat I have some chocolate flavours with some cream. Milkchocolate not cocoa. It is sitting at a solid medium. Right on the mark that I like. It is showing some spices in the nose but light. The finish is lingering and a little bitter but a good bitter. Very nice first third. 2nd I can feel the nicotine is building up in this one. This cigar is pretty consistent but it is showing long highlights of hay, cream and some overripe blackcherries. They come and go slowly. Quite interesting. The burn is straight and paced. There is no need to relight or touch up on this one. The finish is getting longer as I smoke it. 3rd This is much stronger than I remembered. I don't think I would pick this as a first cigar of the day. It is pumping nicotine and the body is medium-medium full. The milk chocolate is gone and now I have some nice tobacco flavours mixed with some cooking spices, like the french provençale mix you buy in fine spices stores. This is original but I can't nub this one. It is giving me too much nicotine at this time. I got to say that I am still impressed with this cigar but I might have chosen the wrong moment to revisit it. 86-87 is what I would give it but could be a 90 if I smoke it as a second cigar or if I had a few adult beverages with it. All in all a good cigar that should be tasted before they are gone.
Mr.T Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Great review and photos! I had one at the LCDH in Toronto a couple years back and really enjoyed it.
CM125 Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I have a box coming, I am looking forward to smoking them good review. Curtis Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
IcedCanuck Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 One of my favourite sticks! Actually I smoked one last night at the cigar lounge. I am into my 3rd box of those puppies with two more full boxes aging a little longer. I would definitely consider grabbing a few more while they are still around. IMO this EL release is a hidden gem.
coug28 Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 As an Upmann fan, this was a cigar that I just didn't care for. More an "LE" profile than it was blended to resemble the rest of the Upmann line IMO. Then again, this wouldn't be an isolated incident, so not surprising I guess. If people want chocolate/cream & earth, just buy some regular release VRs or Bolis and save yourself some $$. My .02 fwiw anyway.

Ahhhh Sir Winnieeeeessss hummmm
isa Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Great review there - i have also tried some of these - similar experience in some ways - its nice, but not excellent for me right now(but maybe it just needs sometime in the humidor) , thanks
Geo17pip Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I have a box that I've been aging, but they never really did much for me. However, last week I pulled one out to try and wow i got straight up chocolate coconut flavors. Tasted like the chocolate caramel coconut girl scout cookies lol. With some age these are improving. Very delicate flavors for me that tickled my pickle in a weird way haha a solid cigar none of the less.
maverickdrinker Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Nice review Simon. These damn reviews are starting to make me think of buying outside my comfort zone.....
