Ophidion Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Glad it was nice outside so I could get some good pictures of a cigar I bought last November from the LHDC in Grand Cayman (band removed prior to bringing it home). Prelight: The first thing I noticed about this cigar was how heavy it was. The foot was packed to the brim with tobacco which made me nervous as I was worried about a tight draw. I put a nice punch cut (largest size on the Creedo) to the well capped BHK. Upon first draw I noticed light pepper and freshly cut grass with a mild tobacco flavor that was only somewhat restricted on the draw (insert big sigh of relief). After the first few pulls the most prominent flavor was a very toasty tobacco that was a tad musty. There was ample smoke, a good burn and just a hint of spice that I picked up from the cold draw. The draw was somewhat restricted, but it helped out a bit as the amount of smoke I was getting was intense. A looser draw may have made this too much to take on at once. The finish on the smoke is like fresh cut grass mixed with a sweet bread and a hint of soy sauce minus the salt. Another odd thing I noticed was a distinct lack of leather or earth which are usually the core on which most cigars seem to be built on. Say hello to my awesome partagas ashtray, which was a gift from a really good friend of mine. 2/3: At this point the BHK has a lot more toast to the smoke while maintaining core elements of the first third. The expected leather core has surfaced, although its fairly muted and is more of a garnish than a main course. There are also light tones of wood and a mild coffee finish which are deposited amply with a dry smoke. The body and flavor of the cigar are both in the medium, bordering on medium/full. (giant cigar, or little ashtray) 3/3: The spice has picked up quite a bit after disappearing during the second third. The great toasty tobacco flavor is still very apparent, however, it has taken on a slightly sweetness to it. A graham cracker flavor has also developed which I was pretty excited about as I have only experienced this flavor in other cohibas, specifically, the siglo IV and lancero. Overall impressions: I'm glad I gave this cigar some time to sit (about 7 months after buying it). I feel as if I had smoked it close to the time I purchased it, it would have been too young. I think the BHK 54 that I smoked today had quite a bit more potential if I had been more patient, but knowing that I had half a box waiting for me elsewhere gave me the final push to just smoke it. Of all the cohibas, this was one of my favorite, however, I still prefer the lancero, esplendido and siglo II. Then again, I haven't let any age so only time will tell if that changes.
jedipastor Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Nice review! I just lit up a 54 myself to celebrate my 13th wedding anniversary. Wonderful cigar!
