Ken Gargett Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 bugger the plane. spent this morning cleaning out the gutters - usually takes me an hour tops but 2 1/2 this time. i think when the weeds hit a foot high, it might have been a warning. happily cleaning away. had tried my bro-in-law's high pressure hose but wouldn't work (which means i'll be blamed for breaking it). all of a sudden, movement next to my head and out of the leaves, mulch and crap comes six foot of grumpy carpet python. will never know how i stayed on the ladder. anyway, he turned out to be reasonably docile. hosed him off the houise. not best pleased at that and he did try and return but we located him to the bush. hopefully he'll feed on some of the smaller poisonous cousins.
amosnaim Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Amazing! They can do a full episode on national geographic about your life and your encounters with snakes... Ever had a real scary moment that actually could end up real bad (god forbid).
mazolaman Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 So, is the carpet snake any relation to the trouser snake?
Ken Gargett Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 Amazing! They can do a full episode on national geographic about your life and your encounters with snakes... Ever had a real scary moment that actually could end up real bad (god forbid). as an aussie kid, you play outdoors, you encounter plenty of snakes. had the old brown and red-bellied black zip next to me and one or two flash by between the legs. tends to scare the crap out of you but most of them just want to get away. if one holds its ground, back away. the carpet pythons are not poisonous but the big ones would give you a nasty bite. i've never told the forum the cobra story. that was in the middle of nigeria and for a moment, i was utterly convinced i was dead, thanks to about ten foot of seriously impressive cobra. but it tends to lose something if put in writing, not told.
Michel1968 Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Man, I'm soo happy to live in a surrounding where ticks and human beings are considered the most dangerous creatures around...

Again, absolutely amazing stuff
charlesod Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Lucky it wasn't a poisonous snake. I would not have lasted on that ladder. I have always been amazed with the deadly critters you have in Austrailia; brown snakes, funnel-web spiders, Irukandji jellyfish. My children used to love watching the crocodile hunter. I figure is he could get killed, I wouldn't last a week.
Omskakas Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 There's still 30 cm snow on the ground here and the bastards are hibernating. Not that they cause any problems during warmer months because there's just one poisonous species of snakes around. At least one thing that's good when you live near arctic region.

Record it then. Pour a glass of wine, light up a cigar and record.
Ken Gargett Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 Record it then. Pour a glass of wine, light up a cigar and record. will try and do it on a review if rob lets me. i should say that this carpet python really was one of the most beautiful snakes i have ever seen. all green and gold. spectacular. even better when viewed from a small distance.
Fuzz Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 as an aussie kid, you play outdoors, you encounter plenty of snakes. Growing up in Sydney in the 80's, the only time I ever encountered snakes was at La Perouse, when the snake wrangler dude put on his weekend shows. Encountered plenty of redbacks, white tails, and the occassional funnel web, but not snakes. Even living out west nowadays (40km from the CBD) I hardly ever see snakes.
