ptrthgr8 Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 I picked up a bottle of The Balvenie Portwood Aged 21 Years single malt last night. Took a small bit of it to taste... wow! Outstanding aroma (the portwood aging definitely imparts it's goodness!), lots of honey and vanilla flavors, some spiciness, very smooth, and a nice long finish. I can easily see this great single malt being paired with a significant cigar - maybe a San Cristobal Muralla or a Partagas Lusitania or a Ramon Allones Gigante. The weather for the upcoming weekend is supposed to be rather pleasant; we're planning on smoking and grilling some nice steaks. I now know what I'll be enjoying after dinner. I just need to figure out which cigar I need to smoke... though I'm leaning towards the Muralla. If you like single malts at all, I highly recommend this 21 year old Portwood. Hell, even if you don't normally like single malts, you might just like this one. Cheers, ~ Greg ~
brazoseagle Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 I llike that one, that and the doublewood are in my "Fav's List" for Scotch.
Marker Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Greg, I am free this weekend. Just me and the 5 year old boy all weekend. Let me know if you have room
Strada Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 There is always doublewood 12 in my bar at all time. I might have to pick up one of those. Good info!
Agricola Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Balvenie portwood is my favourite affordable Scotch, there's always a bottle of the stuff in my kitchen cupboard.
ckearns Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Sounds like you have a nice little weekend planned. I've only tried a hand-full of Balvenies and find them ok to good (Caribbean cask was real bad). I'd like to buy and try more but they're egregiously priced over here. As an example, the 21 YO Portwood you're talking about is $215.95. http://www.vintages.com/circular/120317/index.shtml#/32/zoomed

randomhero1090 Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Great great stuff. The Balvenie 15yr SM/SB is very tasty as well, if you don't have the coin for a 21yr.
ckearns Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Ouch! That puts the kibosh on a purchase. Bottle split? Yup! Big time .Like 8 bucks a swig!
ptrthgr8 Posted March 9, 2012 Author Posted March 9, 2012 Yup! Big time .Like 8 bucks a swig! You're in TO, right? Head to the border and hit up a duty free shop. The bottle I bought was $175 on this side of the border, but one of my west coast friends said they found it for $90 at one of the duty free shops. Not sure which one he was talking about (may not even have been at the border - may have been overseas somewhere), but I'm sure it's still cheaper than getting one off the shelf locally. And stop being so cheap! Life's too short to drink cheap booze or smoke cheap cigars. Cheers, ~ Greg ~
