The city councillor who spearheaded the new law in the Quebec town of in Cote St-Luc says it is among the toughest in Quebec and in Canada. Smoking is banned in indoor public spaces in Canada, but some municipalities have gone further to limit where people can puff away. The new bylaw bans smoking within 20 metres of playgrounds and parks in Cote St-Luc, a city on the island of Montreal. The new law will also ban smoking at events that draw hundreds of people to public parks like Canada Day festivities. In Cote St-Luc, first-time offenders face a $50 fine while repeat offenders will be on the hook for $100. The bylaw was passed unanimously by city council on Monday night. It reminded me of one of my buddies that bought a house right on the corner of a park. His fence borders his property and the city's park property. So what would happen to him if the city I live in passed a similar by-law? Would he now no longer be able to smoke in his own backyard? Would he even be able to smoke in his own house without violating the law? It seems like more and more rights are being taken away from us and nobody seems to see the problem with it.
riazp Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Smoking ban in parks...Yeah I find it ridiculous in a way and normal in another way...Yes a park is outside and all that, but I think the meaning of this is to keeps kids away from second hand smoke and whatnot. Didnt they do the same thing in NYC? They were trying to ban people from smoking in their cars a while back, I dont know if they are still trying to pass that law or not...It will probably get to a point where we cant smoke in our own homes, and the way things are going probably they will ban smoking indoors in the cigar bars in quebec (GOD I HOPE NOT!!)
Squarehead Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 This thing is getting crazy.Where is the right of Freedom?Politicians fouling up the air with their stupid talks more than a cigar smoker. It's amazing with which speed they can pass such a by-law but yet other, more importent and pressing issues are delayed time and time again.
Puros Y Vino Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I've harped on it before and I'll do it again. If politicians are concerned about the air kids breathe, then they need to ban cars from the roads. Period. In car heavy Toronto, I hack out phlegm like a 5 pack a day smoker. if I'm up north or vacationing in Mexico, I'm fine. One car burning fossil fuel could outdo the output of 100 cigar smokers hands down. And legislation like this happens because we Canadians, say nothing and let it happen. We need our own lobby group.
SCgarman Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Exactly, the politicians are concerned with clean air, but what about large diesel engine passenger busses and dump trucks and other commercial vehicles? Ever stand on a street corner and inhale some of the exhaust from these large vehicles? FAR more harmful than a little bit of cigar smoke in outside open air! After these nazis are done with cigars, they will go after your gas or charcoal grill and try to make them illegal, they will go after your sugary drinks and snack foods and then they will try to get into your bedroom and regulate your horizontal mambo maneuvers with your wife! This BS is just not going on up in the great white north, it is happening here in the US and just about everywhere else.
JSPEC Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Its funny how they focus on smoking. I agree it is for the benefit of the kids however, I wrote a paper a few months back outlining the determinants of health. Air quality was a part of my paper and I focused in on major corporations spewing tons of toxic, chemical waste into the air. If you want to clean up the air it is time to start imposing harsher laws on these multinational corporations. There is hardly any regulation on what these factories put out. The Carbon tax is utter BS! Basically it allows bigger corporations the ability to buy carbon tax rights from smaller companies in order to pollute even more lol. Yes smoking is bad however it is the tip of the iceberg so to speak.

It's all politics, plain and simple. Where do they have more votes to be gained? From cigar smokers, or from helicopter parents/tree huggers/soccer moms/and other self-righteous do-gooders? We're definitely in the minority.
