This is my first attempt at making friends again with the Bolivar marca after a nightmarish experience with an Inmensas a few months ago... (the kind of experience that makes you want to rip your tongue out!)

Weather

-a cool minus 6 C and sunny on the balcony.

Appearance

-the cigar I chose from the dress box is a little mongrel: veiny wrapper with some cracks, dry looking with little sign of oil or sheen, squarish, colorado in color,

- on the plus side the band is not glued to the wrapper (I normally remove the band before lighting up),

- the wrapper cracked just behind the band when I cut the cap; I guess the band stays on!

Cold Taste and Draw

- wrapper has a delicate barnyard smell with citrus like overtones,

- foot gives up generous hints of dark chocolate/cocoa,

- draw is perfect with the slightest of tugs,

- cold taste is cedary with dry hay.

Buddies for the day

- coffee (warm, thanks Tim!)

- water

Opening and 1/3

- in your face right off the bat; this little guy does not believe in coyness or foreplay,

- abundant smoke,

- white pepper through the nose, a little acrid,

- early hints of dark coffee and cocoa,

- good solid burn,

- spice settled down after a while to good and smooth,

- hints of burnt cedar peeping through,

- sweet creaminess towards the end of the first third.

2/3

- now moving to medium high,

- very good burn, cone centered,

- hints of nuttiness (almonds),

- spice toning down,

- now hitting its stride with strong coffee and cocoa flavors,

- there is a mellow sweetness coming through now, sort of bread and coffee combo,

- the burn is starting to go askew.

3/3 and Finish

- now moving towards leather and toasted tobacco,

- have to correct the burn (wind?),

- spice back in the nose and on the lips (nutmeg?),

- down to the wire in a cloud of leather and burnt tobacco.

Smoking time: 46 minutes.

Overall: good smoke, Bolivar and I are friends again! Some potential for mellowing but smokeable now. Not overly complex, this cigar will not make you dizzy by reaching successive heights of different flavors but it will not leave you wanting.

Rating: solid 87 with potential to reach 89 once the initial acridity is mellowed out with time.

Had a second BPC this morning and damn!!!

The wrapper cracked again when I cut the cap; same place, same results...

I use a very sharp double guillotine cutter and never had that happen with other sticks before.

Any similar experiences out there??

It was a common occurance for me until I started to moisten the cap area (quick swap from the tongue or under the tap) and dapping dry before cutting.

Thanks mate!

I'll give this a try on my next BPC

Dan, that's a newer Timmy's mug. What are you doing with one way over in France (IIRC, that's where you're at); you got Tim Horton's over there??

Hi Keith,

No, Tim is not present in France.

The trick is to keep good contacts for the supply of those strategic necessities... you know what the other one is!!

Cheers
