I'm going to sound like a total newb here...but I gotta ask. I love Montecristos. I buy boxes of No.5's because of their size and not always having the time for something larger.

Now, I just read an article that stated the 4 is a great initiation into Cuban cigars and that the Monte No.1 is the standard that all others are measured against.

Now put aside the whole Cohibas are better than Monte's etc. etc...that's not what I'm asking.

Isn't a Monte No.1 a bigger version than a Monte No.5 ? ie: same tobaco and processes etc..? and thus the same smoke?

Even if the blend is exactly the same (which I don't believe it is), the difference in length will produce flavor differences between these vitolas over the course of the smokes.

I prefer in this order:

Monte A

Monte 2

Monte 5

Monte 4

The 3s are the real hidden gems of the lot. Nobody talks about them but they have all the flavors of the 2s with an added kick of spice.

Tthe blends are all different.

The goal is to try and blend something that will be unique and enjoyable for ta given length of time. Generally shorter cigars don't have time to develop over an hour - so they need to deliver right from the get go. Vice versa with larger cigars.

Its a common misconception that larger cigars will be strong because there is more tobacco in it - it all depends in what part if the tobacco plant they blend into the cigar - Ligero, seco, volado etc.... different combinations of each will yeild altigether different characteristics.

I believe based on the different blends of volado, seco and ligero filler leaves to achieve the desired flavor and development through the smoke they will all taste different. Whether that difference is subtle or not depends on the smoker I believe.

I am a Monte ***** but I don't like the #1. I found them more harsh and less creamy than the others in the lineup. I do think the #3 tastes mostly like a longer Monte #4 and it is less popular so quality control is better. You do pay quite a premium for the extra length but who of us wouldn't gladly pay for an extra inch? :lookaround::D

Monte #2 outshines them all for me. When it's on, it's close to the perfect cigar. Twang, creaminess, smooth

I concur, but I must put the Especiales at the top.

I concur too but must put No. 2 in between...

Anyone find the petit tubos more consistent than MC4's?

Even though it is supposed to be the same cigar I have never had a bad petit tubos - all hit the spot pretty much.

They are all definitely unique and the length and girth of the cigar will affect the flavor of the cigar, even if the filler in the cigars are the same. The difference would come from the variance in the wrapper to filler ratio.

My preferences would run...

Montecristo No. 2

Montecristo No. 4

Montecristo Edmundo

Montecristo No. 5

Montecristo Especiales No. 2

Montecristo No. 3

Montecristo Petite Edmundo

Montecristo Especiales No. 1

Montecristo A

Montecristo No. 1

I consider the Petite Tubo to be the equivalent of the Montecristo No. 4.

I don't consider to Montecristo Opens to be true Montecristos. I don't classify the Mexico RE Edmundo Dante's to be Montecristos either, they are more like their own line.

If we include LEs, the best Montecristo I ever smoked were the Sublimes.

Given the number of people bagging the maybe the no.1, maybe it is a love it or hate it stick (Marmite). I had a fantastic 06 box off Rob some time ago and each stick was smooth, milky creaminess, (the Monte je ne sais pas twang) a touch of spice and strength and intensity to boot.

For me a Monte is a Monte, no matter what size. The flavor profile is consistent through out the brand, coffee, cocoa and vanilla.

Lately I prefer the #1's, wrappers remind me of the #2's I used to smoke in the 70's and 80's.

What pisses me off is how much they're charging for the #1's right now, punishing the old smokers!

I just ordered a box of Edmundo's because they're 50% heavier than the #1's and the same price, doesn't make sense to me.

x2. I've had good luck with these for consistency of both construction and flavor. Like them a lot.

I fully agree: each Montecristo vitola is different because each has a different blend. That being said, I find all Montecristos have a characteristic flavour profile that I really like. Due to the popularity of Montecristos, quality consistency can be a problem. I used to really enjoy the coffee cream flavour of Monte No 5's but have been dissappointed by too many poor sticks. If you enjoy Monte 5's I'm sure you'd enjoy Monte 2's: the best ones are trully supurb.
