Ryan Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0109/1224310004785.html There are now a total of 4 specialist tobacconists (cigar/pipe tobacco shops) left in the entire country. As far as I know, there's one more in Northern Ireland. The story isn't entirely right. When the tobacco display ban came in here a couple of years ago, specialist tobacconists had to choose between being allowed to display cigars or sell both cigars and cigarettes but display neither. It's ridiculous and nothing other than punishment. Customers would have to pay for cigars before being allowed to see them. The other specialist shops gave up the right to sell cigarettes, and the revenue, in order to be able to display cigars.
Orion21 Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Way to go Ireland! Handcuff businesses and make it impossible contribute to the economy while you flounder on the edge of financial ruin. Makes complete sense to me . . .
mazolaman Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Sad news. It's the same here, good old tobacconists are closing. Yet, you can go next door and see all manner of crap "food" in attractive wrappers.

Cohiba Stevie Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 The shop in Northern Ireland is called Miss Morans, they sell all types of cigars, all you need is to read the reviews online... They are a bunch of tossers, its a man and his mother who run it and they are the most arrogant and obnoxious people in the world. He knows nothing about cigar storage and humidity, he claims its illegal to buy cigars over the internet, and his prices are ludicrous, worst of all is the service, i think they have a false sense of entitlement for their custom due to the fact they are the only proper tobacconist northern ireland. So it looks like we are left with james fox and the decent cigar emporium in dublin then.

El Presidente Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 The strategy is quite clear and it has been nailed. Reduce the operational capacities of cigar businesses to a point where they shut the door. The next big one (outside of plain packaging) is the WHO objective to ban Duty Free Tobacco worldwide (airports and across country lines). The timeline is 2016. This is a big one for HSA giiven their sales exposure to Duty Free (33%).
