DougB Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Here too at the shore, summit. is that what town you are in?
PigFish Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 Well gents... hate to be boastful but it is about 80 outside and Lady Piggy and dog Trashy beckon me to the front porch. Now to select a cigar! Not a usual pick... but the cigar that first came to mind is a Bolivar Belicosos Fino. So a BBF is what it is and I am off the patio to smoke it. Hell, not unusual but I may just have to snap a pick to keep me honest! Can't always find these in cabs, so last time I bought 4. This cab is about gone, the cigars have been very nice. I gave up on these in '02 (or there abouts) but came back to them once the quality started to return in '06. I am glad that I did. I only really smoke two belicosos, this and the La Punta. These are not as good, but good enough to keep my interest. Pictures later! Sorry about your rain. This cigar is right out of a 58 RH humidor and that means it is prime time!!! -Cheers my friends.
KarlJ Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 50F here just south of Chicago. Got the fire pit burning and I'm enjoying a Bolivar PC. -Karl
TonyV Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Here too at the shore, summit. is that what town you are in? No,one town away from Met Life Stadium

Hey pig, Do you dry box the cigar your about to smoke in that 58rh humi. I figured so but thought i would ask, and how do you keep it at 58%
PigFish Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 Hey pig, Do you dry box the cigar your about to smoke in that 58rh humi. I figured so but thought i would ask, and how do you keep it at 58% All my cigars are dry boxed!!! -LOL I try to keep all of my humidors in a ready to smoke state. For me that is on the dry side. I want enough moisture to keep the tobacco from being easily damaged but no more. This refrigerated humidor I keep at 58 RH all the time. If cigars don't let out a bit of a crackle when you roll them between your fingers they are too moist for my taste. My BBF SLB at 58... ready to smoke! -
PigFish Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 ... it looks like I neglected a question from the post. Humidors are like cigars. They are all different. Mine all behave a little differently but that is likely due to many factors including my progressive design changes. This particular humidor has not had a humidifier in it for a long time now. It is tightly packed, air tight and uses a compressor cooler and an older CMT Habitat monitor for control. There is no humidifier in it currently. I have replaced it with one of my powered bead silo units and my own brand of humidity beads that I conditioned at about 60 RH @ 70 deg. F. The bead silo only circulates air when a demand for humidity is called for by the controller. I catch my condensation, if any and dispose of it, or collect it in a vessel, but there is no collector in there currently. Refrigerated humidors naturally dry. If you want to dry cigars there is no better way than to keep them in a temperature controlled humidor, and by simply controlling the water you put back into the system. This is how I keep the humidity where I want it. I use a little physics and go with the power of a drop in temperature to dry the air. Dry boxing a cigar for a few days is of little help (MHO). If you were to examine desorption isotherms for tobacco you would see that tobacco is readily dried at temperatures over 100 deg. F at low humidity levels but reacts rather slowly at room temperature. While the wrapper may dry in hours or days, it is the inner tobacco that needs to dry to affect your smoking experience. Drying only the wrapper can lead to the wrapper cracking while the filler expands due to the heat. If you need more specifics than these just post the questions you have. Cheers, -Piggy
dicko Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Always try and dry-box my cigars, love the difference it makes. I might take your lead and smoke a bolivar tongiht Ray, cheers
