El Presidente Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Awoke this morning looking through a self induced Guinness fog and a jackhammer located in the frontal lobe. Everything went well yesterday as I worked until 3pm.... and then Rob Fox turned up. A few pints and wines later (+ a superb Boli PC) we were on our way to pick up Andy for a trip up the foothills to the Johnny Fox pub. I can't remember the last time I caught a train....possibly when I lost my license....but this trip was excellent. Andy turned up (sporting these days the latest in Mujahideen facial hair.....only missing an AK47 to shoot in the air) and before long we were in the quintessential Irish pub overlooking grassland and the sea. Gorgeous spot for a guinness and a cigar of which I produced a few SLR Pacificos to enjoy. The SLR was spectacular but as I am oft to say...cigars are about the people you share them with, the laughter, the conversation. A fine meal, pints, wine, whiskey and an excellent Juan Lopez Suprema. We left the pub sometime before midnight, dropped a freezing Rob off home (what Irishman goes out at night in a T Shirt?) before Andy and I had a nightcap and cigar near my hotel. I really didn't need that nightcap. Traversing a heritage style hotel (narrow stairs etal) in the early morning when you are not at your best takes the skill of high wire performer. I apparently don't have those skills. At some point I took off my Cuban Heel boots which must have been sensible at the time. There was one in the room this morning....the other found in the hallway outside the lift. Breakast this morning was Smoked Haddockand a poached egg + a bucket of black coffee. Heading off shorttly with Rob to his JJFox store. Looking forward to it immensely and will take plenty of pics to show you tomorrow. We have the Ilocal Irish get together tonight for cigars, pints etal. Cheers!
android Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Listen mate...it's a tough job but we have the confidence in you.

Ryan Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 This thread reminds me of the story about the actor Robert Shaw (Quint in "Jaws") who lived for a while in Ireland. A journalist went to interview him in his local pub over pints and started by asking him how he was. "Terrible", he says, "the doctor told me I have to give up drinking". "What's that?", asked the interviewer pointing at Shaw's pint on the the table. Shaw's reply was "I'd hardly consider six pints a day 'drinking'". See you for pints later Prez

First Lady Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Honestly....you catching a train is the biggest joke I have heard... I was your driver when you lost your licence sweet... god that was a horor time for me with both my husbands losing their licence at once... I must have looked at the wrong person to be punished like that... Only a shoe this time Rob... Boys in Ccanada just to let you know Rob has a habit of disrobing before getting to his room god knows what you are going to leave behind in Canada

Maron76 Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I would have loved to see that! My god, that must have been an awful racket. A drunk man trying to walk down a narrow hallway with one boot on... These are all signs that someone had a great night! Thanks for the warning Lise.
Styler Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Sounds like a blast, very envious! You need to conduct more business in Scotland next trip
CanuckSARTech Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Only a shoe this time Rob... Boys in Ccanada just to let you know Rob has a habit of disrobing before getting to his room god knows what you are going to leave behind in Canada I really could have used this info PRIOR to checking into the same hotel as Rob!!! Thankfully though, I think I lost him in the lobby on our way back in from the cab ride at the end of the night - in my mad dash to make it to the lobby bathroom!
frenchkiwi Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 love guinness over there. love it. (not the horrible stuff they make here in NZ and Oz with the dry ingredients from Eire and local beer) it got to the point where i was having pints for breakfast when i was touring the west coast. went to the parish of my forefathers just north of galway, and the locals commented on guinness as casually and frequently as the weather. "now, there are 3 pubs down the road, but don't go to the north one or the south one, the one in the middle is where they serve the good guinness." had a chat with a recently retired Garda officer, and asked him about the drink driving limit (over a pint at 10am before hitting the road). "oh no we don't do the breathtest thing, as long as you can stand straight, you're ok around here". shock. horror. ordered another pint for the road. enjoy rob. slainte.
celsis Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 I remember when I lived in Irelad, the general drink drive rule was "if you can keep the car on the road, you're fine!" It's all changed now, unfortunately. Garda now sets up checkpoints at 8 in the morning to catch you from the night before!
