IcedCanuck Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 I currently have a "Charleston 150 Cigar Humidor", which has seven pull out drawers and looks nice sitting on my computer desk, and a smaller desktop glass-top humi that holds maybe around 75 - 100 cigars. Once I make my next cigar purchases one of my humidors will be fully stocked ... again. That leaves me with my other humidor that only stores a couple of boxes tops. With that in mind I am once again thinking about picking up a third humidor but I'm not sure if I want to pick up a second "Charleston 150 Cigar Humidor" or something bigger. Obviously the more storage capacity the better but I don't want to spend more than $300. I am also considering a "Lauderdale End Table Cigar Cabinet" which does not really have any selves and is more like an end table with storage underneath for boxes not individual cigars. As far as aesthetics goes the second Charleston would look nicer but I'm sure I'll have it filled up sometime within the next 6 to 8 months. The end table seems like something that would be better suited for long term storage but I don't want to get into any longer term storage until I move somewhere more permanent which is still a few years down the road (I'll build my own walk-in humi when that day finally comes). I could also probably hide the end table in my closet so my woman won't see if ... for a while. Any suggestions/advice/ideas are all welcome.
riazp Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 i'm setting up a coolerdoor at the moment, its dirt cheap, all you need is a cooler - I got a 48 qt cooler at costco for 33$, a half pound of beads, and a digital hygro. all for less than 100$, just takes a couple of weeks to set up, cleaning and getting the humidity up. great cheap alternative. if you check the humidor section of the forums theres plenty of info on this set up.

finecigar Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Getting a good quality humidor for 150 or more capacity is possible but limited more in a 300$ budget. My suggestions of sustainably made and nice aesthetics would be Savoy, by Ashton ( they have an XL desktop which is 150 cap, and costs no more than $200 ), then if you find it on the right sites, Adorini Humidors- they make many in the 100-300 cap range that some have drawers, all are nice designs and would be around your budget, give or take a little. There is one they make, the Chianti Grande Deluxe, very nice looking one. King of a side table design. Is on sale of Amazon for a little under your budget. Diamond Crown Humidors, they have some good quality desktops but that is heading more over your budget. You could always go for basic humidors, but these are three brand names that I am sure will be what your looking for and look nice while you use them. My best recommend. Would be that Adorini. Probably a steal for that price- I think it is regularly like $650 or so, has 7 drawers, 300 cap I think. Etc. Check it out. I won't post a link but you can find it within a few clicks of the Internet. good luck!
livedavid Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Just because no one else threw it out there yet - You could pick up a Vinotemp or any thermoelectric wine cooler/fridge. While they may seem over your budget, I have noticed a lot for sale especially on craigslist or ebay. Vinotemp even sells refurbs themselves on ebay. (I am not sure if people jump in and out of the hobby quite a bit or they just constantly need to upgrade as their collection grows. Sound familiar?) If you can find a used wine fridge locally, that would be my recommendation. The set up is is virtually the same as a cooler (cedar, if desired. Beads, gel humidifier, etc), but the benefit is temp control. I am not sure if temp is even a concern where you live, but the winador can be easier on the (wife's) eyes than the coolidor. There are also people that make custom drawers and shelves for all the units, so you can change internal space to fit your changing needs.
HabanosHoser Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Coolador is certainly the way to go if your looking into saving cash. I did the same as Riaz, except I lined my coolers with Spanish Cedar and got my coolers for cheaper. Floating liners or did you make a box insert that fits the cooler? Got a pic?
TM-US Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 If you have a basement or someplace cool to store the cooler, I'd go the coolerdor route- it's the cheapest and looks don't really matter if the thing is sitting in your basement, tucked away in a corner. If you have temperature issues, then obviously a cooler is not going to work- then I'd suggest the wineador route- a lot more money but temperature and humidity controlled storage for a lot less than the big cabinets that cost multi thousands. I was in the same spot as you, thought about buying a larger humidor, then decided the way to go was to just get a wine cooler- I can fit quite a lot in there.

Maron76 Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Hey IcedCanuck, $300.00 is a perfectly fine amount to spend, especially for a desktop box. Anything more than that and you start paying for a name until you get into the "one off" handmade desktops. Right now I am using an older chest freezer we had sitting in the garage unused. This works great so long you don't need cooling ability. I bet you could get a broken one off of Craigs List for a song. Since you are planing on a walk in eventually, I say save your money for that and do it right (have you priced out Spanish Cedar yet?!!). If you have someplace cool to hide a few coolers they may be your best route for the time being.
IcedCanuck Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 Thanks for all the suggestions. I do definitely have heat issues to deal with. After sleeping on it I'm starting to lean more towards an end table that will provide longer-term storage of my boxes. This way I could, in theory anyway, rotate boxes from the end table humi to my desktop humi as needed and still tuck a box here and there away for a few years.
joeypots Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 If you are going to go the end table route, don't buy a cheap cabinet humidor. 20 Boxes of cigars at $150/ box is three grand, and that's a low ball estimate. You don't want to trust that expense (my cigars are not an investment) to a cheap box. If it's hard to get a good humidor in Canada because the manufacturers won't ship, go with coolers or build a good wine a dor.
