CaptainQuintero Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Thought I would give something new a chance. A nerby wine merchant has recently dumped out all their old mouldy, dried out and sometimes ripped cigars and invested in 25+ boxes of brand new stock! I finally was able to buy my first ever cigar at a B&M in over four years of smoking Cuban cigars! I picked out a couple of Flor de Cano Short Robusto - UK Regional 2010 (but only released this month). Coming in at 4x50 it isn't the biggest cigar in the World but the RG actually makes up for it, this stick lasted just under an hour. Construction and draw -Perfect Cold draw - sweet fresh tobacco and a slight floral hint Around 13 pounds You can see the size of these here, to be honest I wasn't put off; they are something unique and I was more interested in the flavour of this new blend than smoking time. I thought it would be around a 45 minute smoke so again it wasn't an issue for me although others (Ken) may not be so happy lol Immediately the first draw was floral, no spice what-so-ever and a slight hint of sweetness. After the first half a cm this just kicked up into a whole new gear. Mouthfulls of sweet smoke on the tongue were accompanied by mild fruits, mainly grape and that slight floral hint in the background. No spice still and the cigar was mild-medium (perfect for me). The second half (size constraint here) was a magnificant continuation of the first, each draw resulted in lovely sweet smoke flowing over the tongue and fruity waves of red and white grape mixing in but never fighting each other, always just flowing gently over each other. Final inch of the cigar realy shocked me, I genuinely expected just more of the same but bread and butter pudding came in (complete with dried fruit) for half a centimetre which then changed to christmas cake but instead of christmas spice, that wonderful grape wafted back in. I had been in a stressed mood and nearly didn't even bother with a cigar tonight but boy am I glad I did. I'm in such a great mood after that hour that I'm going to go pick up a the rest of the box of these tomorrow! This cigar I can safely say was an easy 96 for me; possibly the best cigar I have had in the few years I have been smoking Cuban cigars, it really was just that good. The best thing is, these were slighty over humidified. God knows what they will be like after a week or so in my humidor and have dried out a bit! Huge congratulations to Simon Chase and the rest of the people at Hunters and Frankau for getting this blend together and it was well worth the extra years wait. Half the price of the BHK 52, half the size, ten times the enjoyment. 2
Van55 Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Thanks for the review. For $20.00 per nub, I wouldn't be buying any of these even if I were buying. Might as well just review the first third. By then, it's gone. LOL Seriously, your review ALMOST tempts me. Nice writing and good pics. What kind of dog?

I was of the same opinion of you before, I wouldnt have bought them but I saw them and decided to try them. So glad I did, top cigar and I can get an hour out of it so I'm happy. It's worth a try at the very least.
android Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Great Job Cpt. Q...your are spot on with the flavors & body of this cigar. I picked up a couple of boxes myself & they are very nice cigars. My first ever La Flor de Cano and they are worth a try.
laficion Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Great review & photos CQ, bravo !!! Yes, shame that it's so small, however, it's great to see that the UK has given a bit of life back to a once great brand. La Flor De Cano use to have as many vitolas as Partagas and RyJ. After 35 years,It was about time that Habanos S.A. gave back a real blend that made this marca famous.
Vortigan Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Wonderful sounding review Cap! makes it a very tempting stick!! Would you mind PM'ing me where you got these?.....I'll give them a call.
riazp Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Definitly want to give these a try, great review as always CQ
nick17 Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I have been trying to get some of these but getting them in Canada is proving extremely difficult
CaptainQuintero Posted August 2, 2011 Author Posted August 2, 2011 I have been trying to get some of these but getting them in Canada is proving extremely difficult Yeah they are really hard to get hold of in the UK now too
cigaraholic Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Very tasty review! If they were just a little shorter and fatter I'd be interested. It's a 1 hr smoke, would it have killed them to make it 5 X 44.
aavkk Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 great review and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I feel compelled to put my foot down and not vote with my wallet on this size though, no exceptions. I know, I know its all about the flavor but I hate everything about this size. With it being a reinvention of a brand and with them obviously using top quality tobacco its a shame they didnt roll it into a size that lends itself to the best expression of flavor. I guess with the smoking laws in the UK and the usual garbage weather no one wants to be outside for more than an hour
cigarmonologues Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Thanks for the review of these great cigars Captain! I finally took delivery of a cab of these on Monday morning (bought on the basis of how delicious the couple of singles I smoked were). Despite being released the best part of a year late they are still on backorder! The couple I've had have both been very buttery and rich, with just hints of fruity sweetness here and there. (My thoughts, before supplies initially dried up...) As for the size... Well, the reason for the relatively short length is that it is, specifically, an attempt to recreate the magnificent LFdC Short Churchill (yes, I know, this is ever so slightly shorter, but that was the basis of the blend and format). If I recall correctly, the Short Churchill's were a very short lived vitola of the late-80s and early-90s which never truly took hold when new. However, they gained an almost legendary status on the back of their aged-performance - unfortunately a little too late, for their fate had already been sealed by the time this became known.

I guess with the smoking laws in the UK and the usual garbage weather no one wants to be outside for more than an hour Size is completely fine for me, I like coronas and CG for most of my smokes so an hour is what I like to smoke for on average anyway. This cigar that the review is from was honestly one of, if not the best tasting cigars I've ever had, one of those famous moments which remind you why you smoke cigars. If a cigar can make me have those feelings and make me that happy I couldn't honestly care less about the size.
