This is just a sad state of affairs considering Tampa's rich cigar heritage. Just more attempts of the anti-pleasure NAZIs making sure no young kid will see the original jersey and be inspired to walk into a cigar retailer and purchase a fine cigar. As if that would really happen!

Sadly, it was to be expected, god forbid theres a stogie on a sports team's jersey. In basketball the washing bullits had to change their name to the wizards because a bullit is too violent, in a coutry that promotes the right to bear firearms...

The pro hockey Tampa Bay Lighting have a cigar lounge in the arena, it is pretty sweet. I believe there is a cigar lounge in the Tampa Bay Rays stadium.

It is a crying shame that history can not be celebrated in public because it is not politically acceptable and worried about offending someone. It is not like half of the people in the stands are going to be firing up Cigars. I think smokers looks worse also it opens it up to personal interpretation. You know most preople think the worse and they will lump Cigars and cigarettes together as usual. Curtis

God, isn't that just silly!

It's not the first time a stogie's been excised from a beloved logo: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/201106081014 The old Charleston Charlies logo was delightful, with the derby-wearing baseball guy clenching a stick between his teeth.

There has been a lot of uproar about this on the local Rays baseball fan boards. It is really inexplicable. The Rays have a cigar bar in the stadium, and the cigar on the jersey should be part of the effort of the throwback jersey to honor the rich history of Tampa's cigar industry.

Sometimes there is a lot of entertainment in the "comments" section after these articles. Did you see the guy's comments; "Now let's see...the cigar goes but "Smokers" stays!? Duurrr!!"

You know, I bet if nothing was done about this hardly anyone would have noticed there was even a cigar on the jersey.

I'm also surprised they didn't change the name from "Smokers" to "Smuckers" or something.

I hope you mean the owners who made this decision my friend... ;):cookie2:

But of course! I would never sully the reputation of the fine people of Tampa Florida! It just makes my blood boil that decision makers fold so easily to politically correct crap like this.

If you're going to change it then why even bother...there are plenty of other throwback jersey's to pick from. Utterly ridiculous.
